Here in Germany we don't have the problem with the clear coat, we have rust! Especially with the 210 to a sometimes catastrophic extent. I would be happy "just" to have to do a repaint...

Hello from a Belgian in Vietnam.
I'm very keen and admirative of your restoration work. W210 is an interesting car, I own a E50 AMG and a 500E.
Considering the dry and very hot weather you won't probably have troubles with the W210 corrosion issues.
This châssis is very ageable to drive.
Your competences are excellent and you will be able to solve any of the problems that you may encounter.
If the price of this one is right, you will love driving a V8.
My very best wishes for a good decision. 👍🍾

Having owned 3 W124s, and a facelifted W210 among other old Mercs, my suggestion is: don't fall for the temptation of a "more modern" feel haha! Get a much more modern (than W210) car for the daily (except the W211 and the W220... avoid those like the plague), and stick to the W124 for the weekend relaxation drives.
Cheers man! Loving your DIY tips on the W124s. Definitely helped me start the arduous journey of wrenching on (and hopefully not breaking) my car.

For those wondering, the M112 does not have a dipstick in place. So nothing is snapped off as mentioned. Great video by the way.

the w210 is like a perfected w124 , it still has the old merc feel but has better motors, suspension, steering, interior space, hifi system boot space, seats, transmission, etc the w211 is a good car without the old merc feel buy it you will love the best e class ever it will grow and grow on you

I purchased a 99 w210 E300 turbodiesel purely for the engine(om606.962) Really enjoyed driving it for a year, very comfortable, the chassis feels pretty solid. Then I took it off the road to remove the engine and soon realised how much of the chassis was still solid metal🙈 I would not reccomend restoring a w210. A E500 w211 would be better and if you research you can get around the brake issue by purchasing new brushes for the EBS brake system and soldering new ones on.

Had a 6 cyl face-lift w210 here is OZ look out for Elec gremlins, RUST above the door edges, cats failing etc other than that the pretty good especially with the 2 extra cylinders.

20 years young.. I also have started to like the 210 the front end never really caught my eye as I love my W140's style. I'm restoring a S420 and also needs a full spray although the 3k I paid and watching the increasing value over the years should account for the cost. Might see you in WA one day may there be a Mercedes club near bye. Thank for the content

I have 2 W210 (96 E300 non-turbo & 99 E300 Turbodiesel). I love mine! This E430 here in the states with the paint issues, etc. would be priced about $2000-$2500. I'm not sure why they are priced so cheaply. The W211 is considered a "problem car" by most here in the US!

Pre-facelift 210s are a gem! Love my 99’ 430 rwd, the earlier cars interiors are muchhh more 124 than the facelift. I’ve had both and the facelift cars suffer from the “w220 effect” as I like to call it haha. Either spec tho they’re such great daily drivers!

Fellow '99 E430 owner here. I like the pre-facelift front better. I swapped in facelift handles which makes a huge difference. Will be doing facelift tail lamp swap to complete the look.

Do I recall you ever mentioning you’ve previously done some kind of paint job work with a compressor and gun you had in your shed or am I dreaming?
If so, at a right price, it can be an interesting different project. Say, 6.5/10 paint job quality compared to a professional for a fraction of the price (though lots of labour involved) might do.

The w210 does have something "oldschool" that the w211 doesn't have anymore i think. I find that they ride better than the w124. They are good cars apart from the rust which is not a problem in Australia i imagine.

Although my w210 300td isn’t nearly as Cush as my w126 560sel. It sure is great on the road and road noise is non existent even at 120kmh. Rides much better than the w211 and future generations. I was hesitant at first with the 210 but it has grown on my a lot in the 2 years of ownership. Although mine is a pristine example with no rust. So I don’t have the usual gripes that most fellows do. The only thing I changed was an upgrade to the Bose sound system and it sounds tremendous. Much better than even the w212 or a new glb class I drove recently. You can obtain aux through the stock head unit if you use a dummy tape and solder an aux cable to the tape head.

I don't mind these and would take a 210 4matic wagon as a beater if I had the space but I just can't get as excited about them as I can about w124s. They're competent cars, just nothing that gets you going.

having driven a bunch of 210s (E230, E240, E320) and 211s (E320, E280, E350), I find the 211 to be the far superior car. much better build quality and interiors. Never driven the 430 though, and the 211 does have the sbc brakes which are a downer, and the balancer shaft issues on the later cars. having said all that, my wife has a 211, and I still move it out of the way to drive my W126/W116/W107 instead as I far prefer them. If think if you are interested in a 210, you would probably find another that needed a lot less work for not a lot of money more. 430s are not so common, but they do come up.

I owned a W210 1997 (6 in line E320) and I would not recommand to purchase one. Many electronics issues that will make you a nightmare. And…as you saw, paint quality is much cheaper than the W124. It was an issue here in Canada. Disappointing rusty Mercedes…More modern as you mentioned but trouble comes with it too!

In 1993 MB switched from solvent-based paint to a more ecological water-based paint, more prone to rust.

I would avoid that car like the plague.
If you want a more 'modern' car get something nearly new, and keep the 124's. I myself have a 1990 C124 and a 1997 R129 for weekend driving. If you are hankering for that V8 power I highly recommend the 129 - beautiful made car. Though Im not sure of there availability in Australia.
I would avoid that W210 like the plague -- as I would avoid any of the MB cars from that era.

Not worth. And the 210 is one of the worst looking benz in my opinion. I would go for a 140 or a 126. If you want something more modern a 221 is a nice choice and pre facelift ones 2005-2009 are a bargain now. Or even a 211 is a good choice too better looking and earlier ones are a bargain too
