I have purchased and owned this laptop for 3 days and have been comparing this with my friend's GL502VS and most of the results that I got are kinda shocking and similar to what Lisa has shown here. One of the biggest shock I got was from the thermals. I am from SEA and weather here is normally hot and humid. But to my surprise the CPU under stress test hit a maximum of only 88 degrees celcius (no cpu undervolting). While gaming temps is around 78-82 degrees on average for the CPU and around 85 degrees on average for the GPU (CPU .115 undervolt). As compared to the GL502VS, temps are only within 1 to 2 degrees hotter (GL502VS .155 undervolt). Bear in mind the the GL502VS has a thicker chassis and a GTX 1070. So I would say that the cooling has been done well here. For gaming performance, I bought this laptop with the mindset that it will perform similarly or a little above the GL502VS. I was proven wrong when I was comparing games with the GL502VS. Most games including AAA title were able to hit 100 FPS or more on max or Ultra while the GL502VS were able to hit around 85 or more on same settings. It hits 120 FPS for sure but won't remain at that especially when playing first person shooting. We were only able to compare 5 games as the games that we play are mostly different. For the keyboard, it was a bit awkward to use at first even though I have a desktop. However, I am 3 days in using it and have gotten used to the keyboard position already and I am not using the included wrist rest. The touchpad/numpad is placement is not really a big deal and I do not have any problems adapting to that. For the bezels, it's not really a big deal for me as my main criteria for buying this are performance and portability and it did not disappoint. Now we come down to the three things that is kind of a bummer for this laptop. Firstly, no place for a 2.5 inch HDD or at least another slot for SSD. However, this can be easily solved as I just bought an external casing for my SSD and just connect it to the Thunderbolt bolt as a secondary drive for my data and games. Secondly, the battery. We really need a new technology for battery especially for gaming laptops. I am getting around 2 hours 15 minutes of regular usage (web surfing, videos, emails) from the battery. At the 2 hours mark I am already hunting for an electrical outlet. For gaming, well honestly, I never played on this laptop unplugged yet. My friend can easily get 4 hours of regular use from the GL502VS before even needing a charge. She gets around 2 hours of gaming unplugged. The final one is a bit of a subjective opinion but the bottom flap that opens when the screen is lifted feels a bit too flimsy. It almost feels like I would break it when holding it from the bottom. You could see what I am talking about at around 0.35 mark of the video. Kinda long for a comment but just sharing what I feel from using this laptop. Edit update: Another friend of mine got the Zephyrus too and his laptop is fine and all except for the screen having severe light bleed on the sides and corners. The light bleed is so bad that it is noticeable even when the background is a bright one. He is requesting for a replacement unit and has not gotten any confirmation for replacement yet. For my unit, there is some light bleed on the right bottom corner but it is nothing serious as it can only be seen when the background goes dark. I noticed this when I first got he laptop and since it's not too severe, I could live with it. It's just a gamble you have to go through when you get a laptop that has an IPS display.
Jon Fung A lot of that space was probably to house the 1080 and what space they have left for the fans and cooling. But glad the laptop is doing great for you!
That's true and it's actually doing well with an external secondary drive unless the user is willing to pay the price of a high capacity PCIe SSD. Honestly, I would still prefer this setup than having the HDD option but bad temps.
Mourishwaran J Gaming unplugged performance is slashed by around 40%. For me thr is not much difference between gaming unplugged at 100% or 50% bettery level. I think this was due to me tweaking with the settings previously to get better performance while unplugged till the battery is at 20%. At 20% my laptop goes into power saving. Edit: Corrected some typo.
Thanks, Lisa. Quality reviews, as always. Ordered mine today. They've been pretty elusive online. Can't wait! I've been through FIVE gaming laptops, the most recent is the blade 14 (which howled like a crying puppy and ran hot).
Apple's strategy of shunning GPU's for decades is really playing them a bad joke right now in the dawn of VR and AR. Especially with nVidia pushing the boundaries of light, quiet and powerful.
Battery life is the tradeoff for G-Sync, the GPU has to be hard wired into the display for it to work, and that's fundamentally incompatible with Optimus. But it would be nice if power management was improved to the point where high end GPU's sip power like an IGP with basic desktop tasks.
I paid £1500 for this laptop secondhand on ebay with no accessories or even a power cord, that was 3 years ago and the thing still runs everything at 1080p max settings, battery life is poor but who uses a gaming laptop on battery power? overall i am still very impressed with it. Edit: i got the 1TB HDD and 24GB RAM upgrades before people say i overpaid.
Don't even buy it for mobility. I use my laptop in bed and while I was fine with my Alienware 17...After picking up the MSI G65 thin...I will never buy a different type of laptop again. It is just so damn light and powerful...I honestly haven't seen any of my games take a dip AT ALL while gaming with the Max Q verse the regular 1070. The slight difference is crushed by how damn light and georgeous the laptop is
Literally one thing that keeps me from buying this. I actually love the keyboard placement because it's justified by the cooling. The trackpad is fine too because ill be using a wireless mouse. However the "Republic of Gamers" branding is shoved down your throat. I'd like a high spec laptop for professional use. 10-13 year olds aren't the only ones seeking performance specs. This is dam near the perfect laptop for me besides maybe the battery and the branding
G Amaury Pérez Almada I use to be all for the MacBook Pro's because of build quality & ability to run Windows natively from boot (no emulation). However I got sick and tired of the mediocre substandard GPU bottleneck they all inherit as MacBook Pro GPU's being almost non-existent, fall apart when it comes to proper gaming for anything beyond Candy Crush (like Tom Clancy's Wildlands).
Same bro. Got the MSI GS65 2018 Model with a 1060. Never going back to Apple. I got 2 upgradeable M2 slots! Plus so much more. Apple is making dumb decisions. I'm trying the Zephyrus once I'm tired of this laptop.
your review was so good, but the laptop is updated with 8th gen intel processors now, and there is no review for the 8th gen model (anywhere in the web or youtube). i am in great confusion on selecting either to go with gm 501 or gx 501.can u do a review of the newer model or can u suggest which one i should go for.
Exactly! I just saw one today and Ive been crazy for looking for the new ones review, however if I make my choice tonight, I’ll probably reply your message if you really want to know pros n cons about this laptop.
Excellent review. My 1080 unit is arriving today. Very excited! I have a question though: at 12:40 you say the blues are off and you should use a colorimeter to correct this. Are you able to advise what you used for this? Thanks. And thanks again for the excellent video.
I really like the design language of rog and this computer is beautiful. wish i could afford one. that brushed black and copper is aggressive sexy retro
Hi Lisa. Please could you make review video of the 13" version of the Razer Blade Stealth. I'm seriously considering purchasing that cool looking device but would first like to see your take on it. Thanks.
Excellent review Lisa. I wonder if ASUS, ACER, MSI will offer a GTX 1080 Max-Q with a i7-7820HK processor. Also do know if Dell is going to offer a similar laptop?
Hey Lisa! Thanks again for a great review! You always make a good combination of shots and thoughts. Great :) One question: Since you`re testing out the Max-Qs.. Will you be testing the Aorus X5 MD ? I am very curious.. The x5 has previously been known for its hight temp and noise, but the MD is supposed to handle it like the Zephyrus. Also it has better IO, possibilities for upgrade, and a traditional keyboard/trackpad. And let`s not forget the battery which is set to 94wh :) The x5 is a bit bigger and heavier, and I must say the Rog has the better design with it`s copper highlights and thin design, but the x5 is a very true contender for the portable gamer I think. If the thermals have been sorted from the previous versions. Best, Permki PS: I got my first batch of t-shirts from Roadkill in july. Thanks for the tips! ;)
Hey Lisa, what do you recommend more for senior high school? The Galaxy Book 12 or the HP Spectre x360 15“. The most important things I think are the display, the performance and the flexibility and portability. It may sound like comparing apples to pears, but i want to know you opinion anyway. Dear greetings from Europe
The problem still with such laptops is that they're not high performers at such high prices and even at their expected performance, they throttle quite quickly with prolonged use. Maybe in the near future the CPU and GPU die sizes may decrease considerably with a simultaneous increase in performance; don't know how that will happen though as the SoC industry is already reaching its limit.
Lisa, would love if you got your hands on the Predator Triton 700 and see how you would compare the two since they are direct competitors. I'm leaning towards the Triton for the build quality
Apple still gets 6-8 hours of battery life... True, not on gaming components, but Mac is not about it... more just for productivity... plus also the combination of keyboard/trackpad/display/weight/build quality... Asus Zephyrus comes close, but it still trades its pros over Macbook with cons... like the trackpad, keyboard position, low battery life and that bottom, that does not look so sturdy and solid... I am looking for windows laptop for games and C# development, I also own Macbook... best to have both of them :D
I saw ne of the MacBook pros the other day. yes, its not made for gamers. it still has good build quality and battery + screen, but it is still overpriced for whats inside
Was looking into this laptop to replace my now unfunctioning Yoga 2 pro, but decided to go for the Spectre x360 15" model instead, although I was seriously considering purchasing this one. For what I used that Yoga 2 Pro for, I don't need a monster gaming laptop to do what I did which was light programming (Python and Java), streaming and older and less demanding games (Jedi Knight, KotOR, shadowrun...,etc). I also already have a dedicated gaming desktop that I will be upgrading to Threadripper and 1080 Ti down the road; so I think I made a good decision.
Hi Lisa. I am considering buying a laptop and need your advice. My main use is video editing, programing and gaming(mainly overwatch and sometimes triple A). I love the design of zephyrous, but I don't know if the bottom is sturdy and can last a long time. Besides the 1080 version is expensive and I am considering 1070 version, but I don't know the reading and writing speed of that 256g ssd. The other choice is thinkpad P71, the i7+p3000 with 32ram and 256g*2 raid0 model is about 2350 after tax which seems nice. The biggest problem is the weight. Too heavy. So which should I choose? Or should I wait for coffeelake? Thank you!
On some mobile platforms, HD on your videos isn't initially available. This video was made available about 24 minutes ago. On my Laptop, I can watch it in HD. But on my Android phone the best I can get is 360p. This seems to happen more often with your videos than those from other channels. Thought you'd like to know.
Probably because our videos are generally longer, so it takes more time for TH-cam to process and offer all the resolution options on the various platforms.
Are their skins available that conceal the ROG symbol and lettering on the front and back of the panel? If not, any recommendations on how to tastefully conceal them? I like this laptop but want to mute the gamer aspect of it.
Lol this is like the worst possible solution - @Bobby Michael - buy some 3m vinyl and wrap it yourslef if they dont have an easy out of box solution. I plan on buying one of these and the first ting im doing is skinning the keyboard deck for protection and to hide the "gamery" look when its open. Than at some slim strips of electrical tap to block out the red LEDs.
It just killed me when i heard no switchable from dedicated graphic to intel's one ..as a Pro audio user ...by the way Exellente reveiew ....can we had a second SSD in it ? any infos on the system latency (Latency Mon results ?)
Yes I know the bezels are big as heck but honestly I feel like most people bought this laptop for the performance and the max-q design not the screen... gosh if you want a screen with no good performance get a razer blade pro
Nearly perfect, but the short battery life is a show stopper. Maybe they can offer a clip on 2nd battery slab. A Ryzen based version with 4K screen might be interesting too.
True that but I think most people who buy a gaming laptop should already expect to be plugged in most of the time especially for a laptop that has a GTX 1070 and 1080. On the other hand, laptop batteries seriously need a new technology. Current battery technology just won't cut it for future laptops.
Will the system board handle more than the single 16GB ram? If one were to find a compatible 32GB stick of said RAM, one should have no issues with that, right?
Lisa can you do a video or 2 on Displayport Alternate Mode? It bassically allows you to use a single USB-C cable for both Video and power but requires that both the display and port you are plugging into on the pc/laptop/phone be Displayport alternate mode capable. The Samsung Galaxy S8 is apparently capable of it but not many other phones. As for screens there is the ASUS Zeenscreen MB16AC an updated one to the older Displaylink screens. Can you also start testing laptops/phones with one as well? Would be useful for those that need extra screen realeastate while out and about. I am personally looking at a Gechic 1503h myself since it uses standard HDMI/VGA/Displayports for video but does use USB-C for power so I could run it off a battery bank so I don't drain the battery farther in my devices.
i love the design until it comes to the keyboard, id rather buy one with a 1070 and a normal keyboard and mouse pad layout alone with a lack of the raising bottom. It has the looks to stun until you open it and realize that its basically yet another desktop replacement that most of us dont want.
Aris I yea I was ready to buy until I saw that screen 1st offense matte screens suck 2nd offense them bezzles are grotesque 3rd is the price the 1080 Max Q is really only about 10-15% faster than a 1070 so there are other laptops with touch screen and the same specs with better displays for cheaper
+MattMexor What are you talking about? Having thin bezel also means your laptop is smaller than having larger bezel. For example, XPS 15, which started thin bezel syndrome and known as one of the most famous thin bezel laptop, is smaller than typical 14inch laptop. It has 15inch display in near 13inch laptop size. Considering Zephyrus is thin and relatively light gaming laptop, having thin bezel means it is smaller than larger bezel laptop, and for those who cares about portability, it matters a lot.
How do you double like a video cuz I think I've watched this video from start to end 5 times. (Still trying to decide as prices keep coming down...) I guess I can use different accounts.
Rimon * My guess is that gaming laptops have bigger footprints and the manufacturer wants to keep the screen at 15.6 inches so the rest of the area is made up by bezels.
Big Bezzels are making your focus better than small bezzels because your eyes can not look at the middle of screen and near to the edges at the same time and for me as a player i really agree with these big bezzels .

Pretty insane how far both the zephyrus and blade lineup have come

Yours is by far the best review I've seen for this laptop. Very thorough, Thanks!
I'll be back to see this beauty in better quality
I thought I was the only one who watched for Lisa 😳😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
NerdyDude186 😂
If there was a version with a 2k 120hz display, I would get one blind

Great review! I appreciate your insight, especially from a novice point of view such as mine. Good tech-spec review. Keep 'em up!
needs a screen designed like the xps 15, no bezels.
Aero 15 then? Almost double the gpu..
The fan noise on the aero is pretty bad
Taliban King agree
Then the chassi would be to small for the components...
Just make it a 17".
I heard that opposite, that fans on aero 15 are among the quietest in this category of hardware\thickness.

Bring back the classic intro with the blue background.
Lisa you easily have the best reviews. Thanks for this! Great use of metric units!!
Lisa, I just have to say I love your review videos and your T-shirts that you wear. Very unique and cool!
Literally one thing that keeps me from buying this. I actually love the keyboard placement because it's justified by the cooling. The trackpad is fine too because ill be using a wireless mouse. I like your review waiting hopefully for 2018 model review
If I get this laptop is going to be thanks to your review, I’ve been using Apple products for the last 10 plus years and I’m done with them
G Amaury Pérez Almada I use to be all for the MacBook Pro's because of build quality & ability to run Windows natively from boot (no emulation). Same bro. Got the MSI GS65 2018 Model with a 1060. Never going back to Apple. I got 2 upgradeable M2 slots! Plus so much more. Apple is making dumb decisions.

can't wait to see the up and coming 8th gen cpu in something like this.
Great review. You're truly the best of the best when it comes to tech review!
Love the design. Wish there's a lower specs with lower price of this laptop... The one with GTX1070 Max-Q version is still very expensive.
its the most beautiful laptop ive ever seen, until its opened
Ibought it 2 years ago, amazing machine, with nvidia whisper mode its amazing,u run games and its luke laptop doesnt even care
lisa - i LOVE your reviews. ty

Mike S Because its a portable Device, duh!!
Isaiah Jackson who wants to bring their laptop to a cafe and game? Gaming laptops are meant to be plugged in.

Yes I did, and thanks :)
Best Zephyrus review I have seen - thx
Yes I've been waiting for this laptop! How's the trackpa... Mouse?
Wow great laptop indeed....Just waiting for switchable graphics for max-q designed laptops....
That would be really awesome...
Dhiraj Deore probably won't happen since most ppl want Gsync instead, which is incompatible with switchable graphics
Damn those benchmarks are insane

The best review out there! Much thanks!!
Nice unit with the exception of the ability to switch from dedicated graphics aka as MSI implements.
So good it's not a balck macbook. New elegant design and powerhorses. So if I take the back off I can use it on my desktop closed?
Hot and loud? Worth the money!
Hey Lisa, will you do a review for the new MSI GS63VR with the 1070 max-q? Would love to see it

The outer look sold me. But I'm not fan of keyboard side, knowing it for cooling.

But on my Android phone the best I can get is 360p. This seems to happen more often with your videos than those from other channels. Thought you'd like to know.
Probably because our videos are generally longer, so it takes more time for TH-cam to process and offer all the resolution options on the various platforms.
Hi Lisa,
Can you do a review or give a few first look opinion on the Asus VivoBook S510?
If the Aero 15 was made out of the same material...
Are their skins available that conceal the ROG symbol and lettering on the front and back of the panel? If not, any recommendations on how to tastefully conceal them? I like this laptop but want to mute the gamer aspect of it.
Bobby Michael Electrical tape
Lol this is like the worst possible solution - @Bobby Michael - buy some 3m vinyl and wrap it yourslef if they dont have an easy out of box solution. I plan on buying one of these and the first ting im doing is skinning the keyboard deck for protection and to hide the "gamery" look when its open. Than at some slim strips of electrical tap to block out the red LEDs.
It just killed me when i heard no switchable from dedicated graphic to intel's one ..as a Pro audio user ...by the way Exellente reveiew ....can we had a second SSD in it ? any infos on the system latency (Latency Mon results ?)
just curious why a lot of people doesn't like killer wifi and prefers the usual intel?
do you think in long term it can keep its performance same even after 6 months or should I go for Acer Predator 17 X or MSI GT75VR ?
Adil Rehman I'm never buying MSI again. Too many problems with the Killer Wifi card.
no hdd only sdd means in long term , perfomance will decreasing
Temperature question - Can you game and place on your lap? How is it compared to Gigabyte Aero 15x?
I'd like to use this in place of a macbook pro for music production. Would you say it would be more quiet than a macbook pro ?
Current battery technology just won't cut it for future laptops.
very very nice Lisa you are dangerous in this stuff great job thank you
Lisa, can you review the gigabyte aero 15??
I was like, "damn this laptop looks sexy, then I saw the B roll for the screen. Yuck!"
lmao 😂
Good luck finding that. lol
What's b roll
the camera can't pick up the screen properly....
Charles B Why would you want 4k 60hz when you could get 1440p 120hz
That is a sick design
That laptop is amazing!!! 😎
Excellent Review!
Hello I wanted to know between the Asus Ro Zephyrus and the Razer Blade 14’ what you think it’s better
Review the Gigabyte Aero 15 please!
Will the system board handle more than the single 16GB ram? If one were to find a compatible 32GB stick of said RAM, one should have no issues with that, right?
Always the best t-shirts.
Would this laptop hold up well against the current gen RTX laptops? Say the RTX 2060?
Is it quieter and cooler than the Acer Predator ?
Thanks
Thanks for this review. Don't care much for those bezels. Still waiting for the Lenovo P71 review.
Those bezels though
Bonenified Bad Ass Laptop Great review!!!
you look like a crazy scientist
Them bezel though...
But hey, it's specs over beauty right...
ill buy it the year 2020 haha hope the price will be down by a few hundred bucks
how do you change the keyboard RGB colors on the keyboard????
No Optimus, good candidate for Hackintosh :)
I am personally looking at a Gechic 1503h myself since it uses standard HDMI/VGA/Displayports for video but does use USB-C for power so I could run it off a battery bank so I don't drain the battery farther in my devices.
who the heck designed the keyboard part? :/
MSI GS65 next. For sure haha.
Is this still worth it in 2020? I think it is being sold for as low as 1400USD. I just don't like that it has 500GB
i love the design until it comes to the keyboard, id rather buy one with a 1070 and a normal keyboard and mouse pad layout alone with a lack of the raising bottom. It has the looks to stun until you open it and realize that its basically yet another desktop replacement that most of us dont want.
Those bezels 😡😠
I know...damn
MattMexor Short Answer: Because they're ugly as fuck
For a gaming laptop, especially when you are playing competitively, you will want bigger bezels...
"Orc Slapper" LOL!!! That was awesome. :)
How do you double like a video cuz I think I've watched this video from start to end 5 times. (Still trying to decide as prices keep coming down...) I guess I can use different accounts.
for video editing 4k its a good choice?
13:35 we can undervolt it?
Is it possible to use laptop with keyboard like this on the couch when keyboard rests on your laps and stomach
Why why all gaming laptops have huge bezzels
Rimon * My guess is that gaming laptops have bigger footprints and the manufacturer wants to keep the screen at 15.6 inches so the rest of the area is made up by bezels.
What is a bezel?
Big Bezzels are making your focus better than small bezzels because your eyes can not look at the middle of screen and near to the edges at the same time and for me as a player i really agree with these big bezzels .
Is it good for 3d modeling and rendering ?
