I am so impressed by the interface now. Must download now. Thank you for this. I am impressed with the capabilities GIMP has always had. Lots of revision and the interface has become less cluttered. So happy.
For anyone else on a Mac struggling with the text selection part, make sure you alt select on the first text first, then shift+alt+DOUBLE click on the little images, NOT the text! 👸🏽
I'm totally struggling here. 1- When I alt (option) select the later the marching ants select the whole text box, not the text itself, so when I add the gradient the whole text box is filled with the gradient, not the text itself. Also, 2- I am not able to do the selection of multiple layers, I can only select one at a time. I've tried option shift click for the second layer, option command click, etc. Any ideas?
This was helpful indeed, already tried all tips mentioned in the video! Especially the "Long shadow" didn't even know about that cool effect, thank you!
First i would like to say that I love the way that you presented your tutorial, it was easy to follow and what I learned from you today will help me in my future. Thank you
I nearly tore my hair out because Ctrl+Alt didn't work for me to select the outlines of the text. But I worked around it and it worked! It all worked! I feel like a god. 🤣🤣🤣
doesn't work for me too. how did you work around? edit: I just went for a break because I was stuck. Now I opened up GIMP again and somehow the text I need is selected. I don't know why, and when I un-select it I can't get it back. So I go on following the tutorial, but it would still be nice to know your workaround. edit 2: I tried some more stuff and I found my mistake. I always clicked on the layer name. But I have to click on the small picture of the layer for it to work. Maybe that was your mistake too.
@@johnb0815 Yeah, I don't even remember what I did now to work around it. It works for me too. It might be because I had an old version of GIMP, but I might have been clicking wrong too.
This is such a great tutorial. Thank you so much! I struggled at first because my interface looked so different from yours, but eventually I found the appearance settings in the Preferences. haha I'm a n00b.
Thx again Michael. The stroke path option seems rather anticlimactic in terms of being a favorite, given your expertise with Gimp and the many options available. It appeared to be just a border around the text, or did I miss something? I do appreciate your work and tutorials.
Love your videos. This one stumps me. I have gimp 2.10.34 Everything goes fine until I open the Recursive Transf. box. Nothing appears around my text. just the outline dots. Tried a number of different options, including a new document with text box and just using this tool. No go. No box with handles to made adjustments appears. Odd. Perhaps you have suggestions? many thanks
No - unfortunately it is destructive, meaning once you apply the effect you can only undo the effect. You can't tweak the settings after it's been applied.
seriously awesome presentation. Someone said it best, clear concise great production value +1 (My icon on my youtube account made using this technique hehe)
Very good! I'd like to make a constructive critic. In 1:02, as a user of GNU/Linux, and considering that GIMP stands for (GNU Image Manipulation Program), I'd like to say that I feel a little excluded by when you say: - "Both" Mac and Windows.
Is there another way to select the three layers? It's not working for me. I read somewhere that the alt key is sometimes intercepted by windows and GIMP doesn't know what was pressed.
It is not possible to select layers by Alt+Shift+Selecting layers, contrary to what you have shown in the video. I am using GIMP 2.10.24. Let me know if there is another way to select more layers together other than making a group.
THanks for the video! I'm having a little trouble. I made on area of text with the long shadow successfully. But when I tried to add more text and create the long shadow it did not work. Any ideas?
What is the key or function you are doing when you alt-click on the layer to do a gradient? I have a Mac so I don't have an alt key. Clicking the command or option key doesn't do anything.
I am having a problem with the text to path part of this tutorial. When I try to use the alt click to select the text it does not highlight the text with the flashing dotted stroke... help please?
As far as I can tell, both give pretty much the same results. The advantage of the new GEGL-based filters are that you can see the result in real time as you interact with the GUI controls in a much more intuitive manner. GEGL filters are also supposed to take full advantage of modern GPUs whereas old legacy filters use the CPU for everything so they should be faster to preview AND render. Not a lot of difference on small pictures but these advantages are very noticeable when working with large files at higher resolutions.
Thanks for the tutorial. It looks like GIMP can indeed be as powerful as Photoshop, only instead of something taking a minute it takes an hour. Of course I hate Photoshop for going subscription on my ass, and for my use I can't justify paying a monthly fee, but I don't know if I have enough time left on earth to learn the same proficiency in GIMP as I have in Photoshop. I'll probably just make do with PS CS2.

I know this is a late reply but try clicking in the thumbnail when selecting it with alt shift I was having the same problem, clicking directly on the name just alternates between the two.
I'm not sure why, but when I try to apply the gradient tool, it tells me "Cannot modify the pixels of the layer group". I have been trying to figure out what the issue is, but even the button for "Paint along the path is disabled. Would anyone have any idea why this is?
Hi, I have a problem with the free select tool I used to cut out images and place them on a newly-imported but for some reason, gimp does not allow me to select the entire item to cut it out of its original background. When I try to select it with the free select tool it selects some part of image and suddenlly it ends the selection in random place allowing me to only choose for cutting part of an image, what is the matter?

don't know what I'm doing wrong but I have applied both colours but when adding gradient it turns out pinkish colour instead of orange?
Your gimp looks colorful, all the tools have different colors. Mine are all black or grey. How do I change it to look like yours?
On GIMP, click on Edit > Preferences. Then expand "Interface", go to "Icon Theme" and finally select "Color" or whichever icon theme you prefer.
