    That is pretty dope. I bet this would have looked really slick if this fixture was made in the late 80s or early 90s and used in clubs during the rave scene and the electronic and house music/eurodance popular at the time, along with all the bright neon colors of the time. In fact I had a couple of 60 or 75 watt black bulbs in the late 90s or early 2000s when I was a teenager and I loved them, threw off quite a bit of heat.

      a year late response, but this light came out in the 90's.

    Pronunced shawvey, i do event production for a living. One company i work for has both the american dj and the chauvet 400 watt versions, both are pretty sweet! Good find!

      Yeah I remember that name and a similar fixture at a skating rink funplex in the 90's gotta love the nostalgia right 👍

    I've seen that name before, but I don't remember that exact lamp fixture! That's a first 👍 any bulb with dark glass gets really hot! Especially MV I'm guessing. Pretty cool it has a double ballast and starter. Of course, anything metal halide works for MV also 👍👍👍

    I found a 400 watt MV unit at a swapmeet for $25. Instead of a mercury vapor blacklight bulb, it has a 400-watt double ended clear MV lamp mounted in a regular looking HID floodlight fixture with the front lens consisting of Woods glass. It is mounted on a large, heavy base housing ballast and a cooling fan. It was made for the entertainment industry similar to the one in this video.

    There’s another mercury vapor blacklight unit that was made by American DJ is called the American, DJ, UV cannon and it also is this type of light as well

    There were also 400 and 1000 Watt versions ( with the large E40 Edison screw base ) made by the Japanese EYE™ company ... I have the 400 Watt bulb and it is BIG ! , it will give you a suntan if held close ! ... WARNING : if the outer Wood's glass becomes broken , the UVC emitted by the inner quartz bulb is INCREDIBLY DANGEROUS , and must NEVER be looked at ( even for 1 second ! ) .... DAVE™ .........

    • @LampLuminance

      yes they are very big I went to a lighting store and found a normal mercury vapour 400w and it was huge

    • @LampLuminance
      @LampLuminance ปีที่แล้ว +1

      oh yes Melbourne has complete phased out every mercury vapour Street light and has retrofit them with cfls or hps lamps because of the danger when the glass is broken because the glass would usually fall off on Major Roads Street lights from all the rattling from vehicles

    • @Sparky-ww5re
      @Sparky-ww5re ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, there have been serious incidents in the past involving a mercury vapor or metal halide fixture in a school gymnasium getting stuck with a ball and the arc tube continues to light after the outer bulb breaks. To reduce these injuries which can be very similar to welders flash, there are (or were) special lamps available that were designed with an internal fuse in series with the arc tube that burns out when exposed to oxygen within 15 minutes of the bulb breaking. There was a letter designation for these special lamps, I believe it was a type T lamp, known as self extinguishing or safety lamps in the field.

    Outer jacket is made of Woods Glass, same as what’s used in fluorescent and CFL black lights. Lamp is classified as ‘Medium‘Pressure’.

  • @redstonecommander5190
    @redstonecommander5190 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    If you do use this bulb with no other housing, but except left it exposed with just the base second the ball was powered on in a very large room the UV radiation from this ball really does travel quite a ways to reach to objects that are black light reactive

  • @mercuryvaporglow5317
    @mercuryvaporglow5317 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    It doesn't get more 90's than this I guess :D Nice MV Blacklight! ;) and it is nice that it has 2 different balasts, this way you can see one of the European balasts that are really rare in the US I guess ;)

  • @redstonecommander5190
    @redstonecommander5190 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    And perhaps this black light is much more stronger than the fluorescent one. It’s basically just like the floor is in black like that you had a long time ago put on steroids.

    There is also a similar fixture created by American DJ called the UV Canaan. It also uses a 125 one mercury vapor black light bulb, and it is in a similar casing to the shadow 125, but it’s brand differently and has a different shell, but with the same design and has the same technology

  • @redstonecommander5190
    @redstonecommander5190 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    And I am pretty sure some tanning chambers may have use this type of bulb as well

  • @redstonecommander5190
    @redstonecommander5190 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Missing produce is much more strong UV than visible light even the large output in the UAB range. You should wear sunscreen near this.

  • @stphinkle
    @stphinkle ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I am guessing that those fixtures were used in haunted houses, some theatrical shows, amusement ride effects, and maybe some commercial sterilization lab applications.

    You might pick up at value Village for $20 but its original price for this unit is originally $100

  • @redstonecommander5190
    @redstonecommander5190 ปีที่แล้ว

    This thing actually produces a really strong amount of UV even the larger output in the UAB range… You should wear sunscreen here this

      Indeed, I thought about this as well so I went looking online for a replacement bulb. There are some listings online but not many. The easiest and cheapest was a replacement on amazon for $20. It only had one review that was one star but I thought why not let's check it out and decided to pick it up. I should be receiving it this week and will definitely make a video on it.

    Hello,
    Did you protect your eyes while recording this video ?
    I have a 400W mercury vapor blacklight and using it at close range without a welding hood or ski goggles absolutely hurts my eyes but what about yours VS the less powerful 125W lamp ?
    I'm also wondering if it could be used as a tanning lamp as well.

    • @Parrot175
      @Parrot175  8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Great question, the glasses I wear have a UV protective coating on them so this fixture doesn't hurt my eyes to look at up close. I believe in a normal use case there would be no issues using this light without eye protection. However, non "black lights" that are only made to produce UV for cleaning should not be looked at with the naked eye, those will cause damage. I don't believe this fixture would case a tan either.

      @@Parrot175Thank's for the reply.
      Yes I know that the germicidal UV tubes can cause arc flash aka sand in the eyes as well as sunburns and in fact I have a few of them and always leave the room before switching them on remotely. that's because of the UVC
      the blacklight on the other hand cause eyestrain and photophobia, at least for the 400 watt mercury vapor one.
      I also have a 6 watt tube and no big deal so far.
      From what I know blacklights can't cause arc flash or sunburn since they only output UVA but you still want to be careful around them.
