  • Starting a photography business was a pretty daunting task for me. I had no where to even begin! With endless research and guidance from family, friends, and professional around me, I've been growing a strong and successful photography business. But that's not to say I didn't make a few many mistakes and learned lessons along the way. I wanted to share with you my advice on how to start a business based on my experience. I've also created a free 'Identifying + Defining Your Business' worksheet for you because I believe it's THE most important step in building a business.
    You can find the PDF worksheet here: www.hannahquintana.com/education

    You discussed a lot of things that I never thought about like identifying your ideal client. Just like most markets, when you try to advertise to everyone, you usually end up with not that many customers. I love this. Thanks Hannah!

      When I first started, I framed my ideal client and put it somewhere I'd see it every day. It helps so much even in the smallest of ways!

    Today is the 1st step in my journey to cut ties with corporate America and develop my own self commitment towards my own sense of satisfaction -- start my own business in photography and studio 🎙 services.
    And it starts with buying myself a white board for planning!!
    Thanks to you Hannah!!

      Use any time you have to build. Start with friends and family for practice. Depending on how far along you are in photography begin offering your services either for free or at a lower cost to learn/practice your aesthetics but also customer/client experience. The latter is often harder for more artists. You can find practice clients on photography facebook groups in your area or when marketing through instagram. Goodluck!

    I loved your videos and website. I had a question. Did you attend a photography school or had any formal training? I am asking to see if signing up for a school is worth it.

      Hi Michael, thank you for viewing the video. I'm glad you enjoyed it! I did not get any professional formal training and only learned from the school of TH-cam ;). In my opinion, formal school is a nice to have but not a need to have.

    I have a problem with starting a home portrait business doing environmental portraits out doors or in public venues.. I live in a very small studio apartment that isn't suitable for meeting clients. So, there is a problem with the initial consultation, but I can get past that. But the sales meeting after the shoot is something I haven't been able to figure out. Billing isn't a problem. I can do that with my web site and in person with Square card readers. However, I haven't figured out where to meet clients after the photos are edited for the sales meeting. I can't afford an office. Any ideas?

    Ran into your page out of no where lol ... I love the content but this is not really how to "start a photography business" a tad misleading especially for new people who know nothing about anything business let alone photography and will only take what they hear as is... it's more like (how to start a small business) ... not shading or trolling you sorry if that's how it comes off. HOWEVER, this is essentials for starting a small business in 2020 no matter what but there's nothing really discussing the actual elements and general aspects of starting photography that's all. I was expecting for you to explain to the new people more like;
    "How to start a photog business": In Discussion
    - Knowing your Worth (Which you did talk this but needs more detail and insight for new people in photography)
    - Professional Contractual Agreements
    - Basic Equipment Starting
    - The Art of client/customer service
    - Defining The Right Clientele
    - Gross vs Net In Photography and How to factor your Expenses from Income
    - How To Profit
    ... Things in such that belong to the nature of photography. I say keep this video for the reference and create a new video on launching your photography business with some of those details and they can refer to this video on getting business legit as you explained. Just food for thought and sharing some things with you, hope you are not upset :-) No, I am not that one dislike, I subscribed and liked still for support.

      Hi there! Thank you so much for sharing thoughts and opinions. I can always value and appreciate good honest feedback. This is definitely more general content but I think your notes are great for a future video that is more specific to photographers. Thanks again and hope to hear more from you!

    How's the business during the past year of pandemic? are you finding your photography income sustainable?

    • @hannahq.photography2584
      @hannahq.photography2584 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi friend! Great question. Surprisingly it was my best year yet because I found while I wasn't booking nearly as many weddings I did a lot of family, maternity, and newborn sessions. A few assessments to why it was a good year financially speaking despite the pandemic: I knew weddings were going to decrease significantly so I spent additional time marketing/advertising portrait sessions. This really paid off. Due to the pandemic, the simple moments were treasured and family values increased. Also, photos were an exciting adventure since it got everyone out of the house/dressed up which was a rarity at this time. Lots of maternity/newborn sessions from covid! Hope this answerer your question.
