I love how Hamilton sounds so desperate in his argument, because even though he presented good arguments, and it’s a downright moral issue, in the end, he still witnessed slavery in his home, and his dead friend fought against slavery

  • @nyss902
    @nyss902 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1684

Ok this was a very good detail and I just want to mention it
Notice at the beginning and most of the song Alexander was almost a really bright white, Thomas and George were a light grey and James was a darker grey, then notice after James mentions Alexander’s affair, Alexander goes to a light grey like Thomas
The animator of this might’ve done it on purpose or not but it makes it look like that Alexander lost confidence the more the battle went on and by the end of it his confidence wasn’t really there which is why he just decided to agree with them. And this goes along with James, when he first stepped in he was a darker grey and after Hamilton interrupted him he was a lighter grey and swung back at Alexander signifying that he had more confidence in his opinions. And again same goes with Thomas, when Alexander mentioned his wife he kind of turned a darker grey and started flashing black because he lost a lot of confidence and what he said really affected Thomas
The creator might’ve not even meant to do this, which in that case this rant would’ve been absolutely pointless
But if they did mean to do it, it was a really good detail to add and it made it kind of easier to connect to their emotions

Lilli's Realm I think it was really needed, or at least be more well known as a deleted song, just link how Congratulations is. This song is underrated. But we need it today now more than ever because of the protests happening in America, the “cancel Hamilton” hashtag going around because of some vocal minority wanting to cancel the show because of the lack of attention brought to the slave-owning side of the founding fathers. I disagree with cancelling the show, so I wish this song was more widely known in the fandom so people know that Lin did originally consider addressing that the founding fathers owned slaves and their immoral decisions.

@Little_biscuit 333 I just read your comment and I find it really interesting and would like to put my input here. I can agree, they did some horrible things, and that they also did some really good things but the part that I agree with but also disagree with is the fact that you said: "Although it was socially acceptable during that time period ... they did horrible things also". Its the fact that it was socially acceptable at the time, think of it from a more recent example, segregation of people of colour in America and Australia (I'm not sure what happened in Britain and other countries I only know these two). It was seen as socially acceptable to have people separated due to the colour of their skin, I'm not saying it was the right thing to do, but at the time of it starting it was seen as socially acceptable, and so no one said or did anything. I guess what I'm getting at is the fact that at the time no one did anything about the issue because they didn't see the issue or didn't want to see the bigger picture overall. It also takes a lot of courage to stand against the majority and it is usually required that you follow the bigger part of the population. (Also I can accept the fact that you were saying that in regards to the song being placed into the musical and what that would have done for the overall mood of the musical, and if I can I would also like to point out that you never made a comment about how it never mentioned that fact that Hamilton worked for shipping slaves and owned two himself and what that would have done for our protagonist.)
PS. I am not disagreeing with you I agree 100% there were just somethings that I noticed that I wanted to point out :)

Hamilton’s affair with Maria Reynolds took place from 1791-2. The affair wasn’t revealed until 1797. Benjamin Franklin died in 1790. Either Franklin had a time machine, or the Quaker petition wasn’t addressed for seven or more years.

    • @imotekh6110
      @imotekh6110 3 ปีที่แล้ว +61

It's not often addressed, but history is incredibly messy. It always has been and forever will be. Hamilton himself was not an abolitionist and it was only through relatively recent searching through his cash book we found evidence of purchase of slave labor for, presumably, his household. As to how well these folk were treated, we can't know as that's long lost to history. Slavery was a massive institution for the vast majority of human history. To a lesser extent today and far less accepted. History isn't, or rather, very rarely is a clear cut good vs evil. It is distinct in it's humanity within it's various stories. The attempts made to cancel men long since dead for lacking the supposed enlightened thinking of the modern day is an utter waste. It was tragic yes and it should be addressed in teachings. However, letting it overshadow the accomplishments they each achieved is no better. History is often nasty and embroiled in savage practices by today's standards. But never forget without them we wouldn't be here to complain or address it in the first place.

Trina Whitaker I agree that it shouldn’t be in the official musical because it doesn’t fit with the narrative, message or story that the show is trying to convey, and that slavery and race is still controversial/sensitive topic. But because of the BLM protests and the cancel Hamilton hashtag surfacing, people should be more aware about the faults of the founding fathers, but also that Lin did briefly consider putting this in the musical and giving attention to the ugly side of the characters and to be more historically accurate.

rant time: although i feel cabinet battle 3 would have been a good addition to show the effect of politics on people and character development for the FICTIONAL hamilton, the ACTUAL hamilton wasn’t much of an abolitionist (even though he’s portrayed that way) like john laurens was and that doesn’t sit right with me - so i agree with LMM’s decision to cut it since it’s not accurate and doesn’t further the plot. that said i like this animatic of it because of the subtle color changes of FICTIONAL hamilton and jefferson, kinda illustrates how slavery was viewed as a morally “grey” idea rather than totally evil and disgusting like we know it now. if you watch FICTIONAL hamilton you’ll see what i mean.

    • @CraftageNate

      I agree with your rant.
but I would like to counter the 'grey area'
doing my own long research, in real life, slavery was a trend like hot-topic clothing. if you had money, you owned slaves.
Jefferson tried TWICE to get rid of it in America (the draft of the Constitution and His letter from France.) Hamilton and Laurens tried as well...
the problem is that... well.. like he said "We can't answer a Question if we don't have a answer."
because the north needed the south. can you imagine the Civil War that early? america would have collapsed much MUCH earlier and all that fighting would have been for nothing.
Slavery is bad. And it still exists. it's a cancer. But back then, it was even worse. And at the time, waiting until 1808 was the right call.

Even tho Chernow's book takes a very rosy, heroic view of Hamilton, uou have to keep in mind that he's a writer, a journalist and not an actual historian. 0:00 Introduction:
As always Washington starts off by this time describing the issue of slavery and the petition by B. Franklin wondering if they should ban slavery.
    0:24 Jefferson’s Argument:
Jefferson starts off explaining that all states can’t make a decision to ban slavery until 1808 and that even though slavery would be banned racism would still catch up to them. He also explains that it could be impossible to ban slave trades now even if it’s a great idea. Then later on he also says that he attempted to have one place to end forms of slavery but failed to come up with the votes.
    1:02 Hamilton’s Argument
Hamilton says that the longer they wait for 1808 to make a debate about the topic than the population in each state doubles and maybe triples itself each year. Mentioning that Washington owner slaves before and that they would have their souls cursed when they die. At the end he roasts Jefferson mentioning his sexual relationship with Sally Hemings.
    1:54 Madison’s Plan
As for Madison he suggested a compromise a that the debate will still happen in 1808 (despite his belief that the debate would be a disaster). After telling both North and South that they’ll stay with the 1800s being the deadline they hope that the worst will pass over.
    2:23 Washington’s Decision
Washington agreed with Madison’s argument and tells him to tell all the states. After the discussion is over he hopes that the next generation of people could think of a better idea to abolish slavery.

I feel like before Lauren’s died Both him and Hamilton wanted to abolish Slavery but when Lauren’s died Hamilton felt like he made a promise to Lauren’s and that was, of course getting rid of slavery yet I feel that being a founding father got in the way of that, most of our founding fathers owned slaves because when they became more important they got more money so they got bigger housing and since the founding fathers thought of themselves as royalty they didn’t want to clean/ didn’t have time to, leading to them buying slaves. I feel like some of this rubbed off on Alex because he grew up poor in a very poor town so when he came to America he didn’t really know what the wealthy did with their money and I hate to say it but having slaves became a sort of “trend” so Alex felt pressured and because he had never had much money he didn’t know what to do with it leading to him buying slaves but I feel like he always felt guilty about it like he let Lauren’s down or betrayed Lauren’s who was one of his best friends. In the end of the song he sounded more defeated so I’m guessing that he didn’t want to fight against slavery because of all of the backlash he would get for it (sorry this was really long)

To be honest, I think all three of them have good points. Slavery is bad and shouldn't continue (or happen again) but you couldn't just abruptly stop slavery and not face repercussions. Also, you face the problem that (most) Slave owners aren't just going to treat people (who they see as property) kindly or humanly. It's just not going to happen. (Sad, but true back then.) James Madison had the best argument but both Alexander and Jefferson bring in really good points. (When they weren't arguing like oversized babies)

The twisted thing about this debate is that both of them are right.
Jefferson’s point about America literally being politically and economically unable to answer the question of slavery is dead on. Anything other than what they did likely would’ve caused the United States to collapse. So Jefferson’s hope that future generations could solve this issue has merit.
But Hamilton was also right. In the end, kicking the can down the road led to the Civil War, where hundreds of thousands of Americans died, proving in the end that it was probably better to rip the bandaid off in the beginning.

Consent age at the time was 10-12 so culturally, no one would miss a blink at Jefferson getting into a relationship with a 14-16 year old. Which leaves the slave part. A factor to remember though is the relationship started in France at an unknown date, but she was 16 when she was pregnant. She'd be 16 in 1789 which was when France abolished slavery and when Jefferson and the Hemings headed back to the states. Both Sally and her older brother James (who payed for a tutor to teach them both French) could legally refuse to come back to America with Jefferson since they weren't his slaves there. While there is no reports of James saying he'll stay, one of Sally's sons says she told Jefferson she wasn't coming back and in order to get her to come back with him, he had to promise her extraordinary privileges for her and any children they had. In the end, Sally chose to be a privileged slave in Monticello rather than be a free woman in France.
Situation is still screwed up, but way too many people imagine Sally as a helpless sex slave when thinking about the Hemings-Jefferson relationship. We'll never know the exact nature of it. But we do know Sally had some odd attachment to Jefferson after he died, choosing to keep some of his belongings before she was informally freed by Jefferson's daughter (and Sally's niece since she was the half sister to Jefferson's wife).

as much as i love this song, and how i love that it teaches people even more about slavery that we dont really learn in school (at least i dont, im achally finishing my slavery unit in school now lol) but i understand why it wasnt included, it takes place somewhere between the renyolds pamphlet and the world was wide enogh. (i think this because madison and jefferson were pretty much calling hamilton a hypocrite about him calling jefferson out on cheating) and that point in the musical really didnt have time for that. after all they needed to cover burn, congragulations (AH WHY DID IT HAVE TO BE CUT) phillips death, burr losing the election, ect. its possible this song took place before that though, considering washington was still there and hadnt retiered. but going back to my point, it dosent make sence to bring up this topic out of the blue. the musical does mention slavery quite a few times, but its not all about it. i think having a song dedicated to it- while fun and amazing, it dosent belong.
thank you for hearing me out :D also sorry about my grammer and spelling T-T

Actually it wasn't that Jefferson was cheating, his wife had already died, long ago when he was 39, she was 33, when he was with 'Sally' he was 45 and she was 14-16

„Sir, even you, you have hundreds of slaves
Whose descendants will curse our names when we're safe in our graves”
God I love Lin, this is such an incredible line, the song itself s amazing I’m so sad it didn’t make it in.

I really wish this one had stayed in the show. It would’ve been nice too have a darker cabinet battle that showed Hamilton losing

Your animations are soo expressive . I like this animation style for that alone. Great work and thank you for reigniting my love for Hamilton .

This animation is great! I also get why he took this out of the final script. It may have went down a rabbit hole he didn't want to go for the story but also Hamilton may have benefitted more from slavery irl than the show portrays

Wait... Wait! Did I just figure out that the reason Madison and Jefferson say “Do you really wanna have that conversation?” This Song used to take place before We Know, and Hamilton says something about Jefferson’s affair before that, and Madison and Jefferson are implying that they know what happened with Hamilton’s affair. THE AMOUNT OF DETAILS!!
Edit: TYSM for whoever liked this! I don’t get likes often! 😁

First of all, this was a good one.
Second, much darker tone than 1&2.
    Third, this song makes angry.
What reasons, I don't know yet.
Lastly, I dunno which side to choose.
