    The barrage table is used for the attack by fire. A hit is made in PD or terrain on a 5-6.

    In the 2nd attack on the Engineer there did you count the red support? The Arty was available right as it was had 4 (3 intrinsic + 1 attached)? For a result 1 higher?

      AV units (including dual) are never supported. They are "self supporting". Dual units get a +1 in an attack, basically to show they are self supported. Pure armor (AV) unit can't do an assault as they don't have an assault arrow.

    In the latest version of the rules, 2.0, look at 5.5e. An automatic retreat calls for a move to a HQ Refuge which must end adjacent to the HQ and at least 3 hexes away from the start of the retreat. If this is not possible, the unit is removed from the map and returned to play in the next Reinforcement Phase. For that 2nd attack, the Ami INF BN must be removed.

      Roger that. This was made when the BCS was just coming out. A few things have changed over the years.

    Thanks for a very clear presentation. I have to say, it seems very strange to me. I assume the US anti tank bn was spread out in support of the maneuver units, but what's the idea of the panzer bn attacking to take them out ("drop support"--if that's what that means)? The armor would be trying to either bypass the infantry or overrun them, avoiding the fire of the American tank destroyers or AT and not trying to engage them in a shoot out. The panzer division was stopped by two battalions of infantry and some suppressed anti tank guns--and no artillery backup. Luck of the dice?

      Hey Tom! As you can see I don't visit here often! :-) You're correct. The US anti-tank BN was pieced out to the different INF BNs. Without support the Armor could just "roll on by" the infantry, but with support then basically have to know it down before then can do anything else. If they drop the support as we call it, then they can attack or move (if it was their first fire, when they fire the second time they are done no matter what). The armor isn't going to just roll past a INF unit with anti-tank capabilities. Even if they wanted to, they are likely getting shot at.
      The unit counter for the anti-tank unit is showing that this formation (division) has support. The counter doesn't represent the unit it self.
      I hope this helps and sorry about the delay.

    Enjoyed it. Just learning the series rules. Didn't you use that German Artillery Point twice (the northern attack and then the Goodman attack)?? After VBraun's attack, did you stack the US Train in the attacked hex instead of the HQ unit?

    • @ricvandyke496
      @ricvandyke496  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Joe, the German formation has 4 arty points total. 3 are intrinsic to the unit and one more assigned to it. Yes that was a mistake to move the trains, should have been the HQ as you say. Not sure why I did that.

    • @joeperez3520
      @joeperez3520 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ric Van Dyke understood. Those other 3 art points are kept track of off-map?

    • @ricvandyke496
      @ricvandyke496  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      No they are on the HQ counter. It's the number 3 next to the movement value of 12.

    • @joeperez3520
      @joeperez3520 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Ric Van Dyke So you have to keep track of art expenditure in your head? Pluses: you're using all the pts during the current activation. Minuses: old age.

    • @ricvandyke496
      @ricvandyke496  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      LOL! Yes for the most part I just keep track in my head. You're only activating one formation at a time so it's not that bad really. With a full activation (pass) you get all arty, with a partial you get half (rounded down) and a fail you get none. That's why it's good to keep formations with even arty points as much as possible.

    One other question. When you 'fire' or engage twice you are still eligible to conduct a combat assault yes? [ sorry i know that is not the right terminology]. Great vid.

    • @ricvandyke496
      @ricvandyke496  8 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Only a DUAL unit can do that, that is a unit with an AV rating and an Assault Arrow. If it's just an AV unit (a pure tank unit) then no, it can do two fire attacks and then could assist an attack, but it can not attack since it doesn't have an assault arrow. Bottom line, dual units are really cool! :-)

    thanks for the walk-thru. But what is the difference between crossing a stream and crossing the streams. Is it just the quantity of streams being crossed, of the type and/or significance of the stream(s) itself? Or is it just a sort of embarrassing Ghost Busters reference? I feel so funky...

    • @ricvandyke496
      @ricvandyke496  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Well the universe will not explode so no Ghost Busters streams here. :-) Crossing Streams in game terms has to do with crossing supply lines (or supply streams). The basic idea is that this would cause confusing and delays in supplies reaching the HQ's so "it's a bad thing". See rule 1.6 Terms and 10.2d Crossing the Streams for details.

    Third attack vs. the engineers, the first shot was an engagement and should have netted the Ami BN a 7, +1 for the PD and the 3 for support. A final DR of +1 to the engagement.

    I really love these games (ever since the early seventies), but the mental fatigue of micro-managing rules puts a damper on things. Thank goodness for War in the East and Command Ops 2, on 4K monitor, as my cardboard chits sit on the shelf while the cat pilfers the paper map. Nice little tutorial though. ;-)

    Appealingly comprehensive but too fiddly and cumbersome. Love the period though.
