I was skeptical but the Muratiic acid was AMAZING. My first instinct was to try a propane torch because I assumed that the combination of Aluminum's low melting temp and high rate of thermal expansion would make it pop it loose and drip Aluminum on the floor. I gave up out of fear of over heating the crank. The only thing I would do differently next time would be to apply bug spray on myself first because bugs were biting me and I couldn't risk swatting them with my acid covered gloves LOL
I have only had to 1 one like that on a generator and it was my fault for not checking the oil before i started it. I was half asleep after a 15 work day and now i make sure to check the oil in any 4 stroke engine before i start it
Hi, thanks for this vid had a cylinder go down on my pro XS 250 merc and it was coated with aluminum. Took about 2 hours and a good honing and she’s ready for a new piston.
Hello. my experience would steer me towards sodium hydroxide ( lye) solution will dissolve aluminum and has no effect on steel what so ever. It is how machinists clean aluminum from files . keep making the videos . Great.
that eng had to be run with no oil alum. melts at 1100-1200 deg i think norrmal running dont get that hot you may be able to heat with a torch and wipe it off
Hey Jeff this is awesome! How did it work out in the end? I'm confident that it worked just fine? I was just staring at the 454 dollar crank that came out of my locked up Hobart Champion 10000 watt generator / welder due to just using it now and then without checking the oil and it just hit me that the aluminum is stuck to the crank and the crank journal is not likely hurt. How to get that aluminum off without a machine shop was the next question which led me strait to your video here with a quick search on youtube. I think I'll try this I'd much rather buy a rod than the crankshaft.
I have the same thing with my old Kohler I thought the crank was ruined then I was looking at it one day and it acured to me the aluminium had just welded its self on to the crank .
@@JeffsLittleEngineService ya really bad stuff to breath I'm just glad I can save it.the guy I naught it from hade a full custom build the shaft has ben ground on and cleaned up and it has hade weights added to it so it is fully balanced fresh rebuild ported polished .no balance gear or governor .a friend of mine was revvng it I guess he got carried away then I got a phone call about my tractor not running anymore .that was 2 years ago I just took the engine apart last week .I'm hoping and praying it will all b good . Might save up for a custom rod with bearings
Battery acid is sulfuric acid. Muriatic acid is hydrochloric acid. Sulfuric is also sold as a drain cleaner, and hydrochloric/muriatic as a concrete cleaner. Both pretty nasty.
Check on youtube for a man named James Condon, he works on and rebuilds generators. He has several videos on using Muriatic Acid on crankshafts. This was a good video and I appreciate all the ones you have out.
Good on ya!
Sometimes, it's not about the cost; it's about the skills that are being rapidly lost.

LOL!
Wow! I thought that crank was toast great job
Proper job!
I've tried hydrochloric acid before and like you it did nothing.

Good video Jeff. Looking forward to watching the rebuild.
So Mr. Tech Tip 😎 that acid wow really did the job ! Two in one day NICE ‼️ Great save .
thanks Bill. I will put the whole engine back together hopefully this year

Great to hear!
Thanks for the rope trick!!
YOU'RE BACK, its about time. Thanks.
Thank you the comment! I plan on making many more vids
emery cloth for sanding, wont contaminate the metal with sand, but "it's a lawnmower not the space shuttle"
I've seen this done makes the second time on dressing it - getting it ready for piston rod . never saw the acid used tho . great video ....Thanks

R U going to do a video 📹 of the reassemble? That was awesome
Yes I will
i wonder if you could put the rod on loose and use it to rotate the emory cloth woud be smother than the rope
icleaned mine up with a sanding block runs good now
Maybe should have washed off acid with baking soda before polishing journal.
I would have used korcus cloth
Yes good tips
Sulfuric acid !! Don't mess with that

It came out great! but I still have not reassembled the engine. I have been procrastinating
That's pool asid right

It cleaned up very nice with this procedure, very toxic fumes though

I’ve done it a lot but most of the time crank is bad and not in specks

good to know, that muriatic acid was very toxic to work with
@@JeffsLittleEngineService the worst part is the fumes. Best to do it outside. I like that rope and sandpaper trick, I'll be sure to try it .
@@hohner51 yeah the fumes got me for a second so I got my box fan out
Wonder how you neutralize it once its applied? He didn't cover that.
@@aswasis baking soda in water. A bucket of baking soda solution should be kept handy whenever you are using acids. It will neutralize the acid.

Check out james condon's youtube channel for his removal technique.
nice!
I am broke down on the road with a semi the same problem I tray but didn't work
sorryman
that acid is bad stuff dont want to breathe it
Did you use your wife's tooth brush?
nah she is good to me
Is this 30% muratic acid? Its the only thing i find
It’s what I use and it is enough to clean it good
