The word that comes to mind with this show is "repellent". The over-sexualisation is gratuitous and off-putting, The Weeknd's performance is just unconvincing, it makes no sense that a popstar would be drawn to someone with absolutely no charm or charisma. Depp's range is good but her and Abel's dynamic was described somewhere as "anti-chemistry" and I fully agree. And like Chuuzus is saying there doesn't appear to be any substance or plot or nuanced commentary on the world. Also note that Depp is almost always partly naked whereas Abel is fully clothed throughout. The dynamic is just weird.

Everyone is treating her delicately following her mothers death & she needs someone to give her limits. I think that explains both choking scenes (on the couch & with Tedros) Also with the red robe Josclyn wore at the end & the black ensemble Tedros wore, it seemed like it was symbolising a Red Riding Hood, Big Bad Wolf dynamic. Overall this was to me a pretty solid foundation & I’m interested to see how the story will grow from here.

I completely agree. I watched it for the first time last night and then watched your reaction. At least with Euphoria we knew the story was going to be able the lives, trials, and tribulations of a group of teenagers. We knew that episode one, it was a common sense conclusion. But with The Idol, it really just felt like 365 days with american accents and less glamorous destinations, but equally as problematic and unnecessary. By the end of that 1 hour episode i feel like velma searching on the ground for her glases except I'm searching for plot. That being said, i do think Lily Rose Depp has the potential ti be a really good actress, i think shes definitely doing well with what she's been given.
