  • Join me in this first video after taking on the challenge to fix ‪@FreddieDobbs‬ Triumph Bonneville T100SE. This motorcycle is the central focal point of his channel and has been right there with him on many adventures from all over Europe to the Sahara, across the Atlas Mountains to the local coffee shop!
    We begin by destroying part of my house for more motorcycle storage and then begin the assessment of this poor, tired motorcycle.

    A lot of negative comments about Freddie's lack of care for his bike - justified yes but you should remember he does not have a dedicated workshop and a couple of spare bikes to hand like many others with bike channels. In my youth when I had a shed at my parents house my AP50, CB175, RD250 were all immaculate, cleaned waxed and gleaming without a spot of rust. Later I moved to London, lived in a flat and has to park my Z750 by the roadside under a tarp. To wash it I had to carry water down 3 flights of stairs and around the corner. When winter came It was a lot harder. I did my best but was commuting to work each day through rain and even snow. After 1 winter the bike was a mess and I really couldn't maintain it. I think a lot of bikers have dealt with that frustration - not everyones experience of biking is spending hundreds of pounds on brass replacement seat bolts and spending 4 hours a week cleaning their bike with the latest 30 quid per 100ml dedicated bike cleaner.

      @jonathancarson1974 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +5

      Sure, but you can get some s-doc or mucoff, a spanner and screwdriver for the footpegs and exhaust and it's at least an improvement. .. one hour a weekend in winter is doable surely 🙂 (or he could bring to those guys that do snow foam and acf for the winter ...I mean there's at least a video in that too..)

      My VFR750 is under a cover in the front garden, which I share with the downstairs neighbour. If I want to wash the bike, it's up and down the stairs with a bucket. I do all the maintenance there or on the street. It's a pain and I'd love a garage, but a bit of regular attention has kept it sweet for the last 16 years. Luckily I don't have to use it to commute in winter!

      Tbh there are no excuses for not cleaning and or looking after your bike, only by ignoring things and not cleaning does it end in this state, it doesn't cost much to keep it in check now and then and you don't need specialized cleaners.

      Fun fact, on the old Triumphs without the counterbalancers, parts would rattle off those bikes virtually on a daily basis. Sometimes parts would literally break from the vibration. In 1955 an American bought a new Triumph twin and rode it coast to coast! No problems except it vibrated so hard the fuel tank literally split down the seam in the middle!! True story.

  • @arryc3947
    @arryc3947 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +44

    It makes me both happy and sad to see this. Happy that you're helping Freddie out and sad that the last place that were apparently Triumph specialists decided to mug him off with low compression as an excuse for him to give up on it. It was apparent right from the get-go that compression wasn't the issue.

    • @DD-co1zn
      @DD-co1zn 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +15

      What's sad, and obvious, is you have no real idea how a business is run and as a result you're mugging off the specialists based on your pure ignorance.
      Mechanics, and specialist mechanics, have to get paid for their time. Particularly with the specialist, the primary reason he was discouraged from having the specialist try to fix it was because he would need to pay the specialist for every hour that was spent trying to diagnose the problem, potentially only to discover that the problem would not be economically sound to fix. Just look at this video to see what state the bike is in. The specialist told him the most economically sound thing to do was to either try fixing it himself, or cutting his losses.
      That's BUSINESS. That's the REALITY of RUNNING a business.
      If Freddie wanted to pay the specialist for their time, and was willing to wait while the specialist juggled his case with more straight forward jobs, he could have done.
      You misunderstand this channel if you think the point is to put professional mechanics to shame. Rather, it's supposed to show you that - when a job makes no economical sense to pay a mechanic - all is not lost if you are willing to spend your own time on the problem.
      Mug.

    • @arryc3947
      @arryc3947 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +14

      @@DD-co1zn Lol, loving your little temper tantrum.
      I have no problem with specialist mechanics wanting to get paid and I have no problem with a specialist mechanic telling a prospective customer that they believe the repair job would be uneconomical in their hands and it's best off elsewhere.
      What I specifically DO have a problem with a specialist mechanic telling someone outright that the problem with their bike is low compression and it needs a new engine, when they hadn't the slightest evidence that this was the case and - indeed - we now know categorically it isn't the case.
      If that's the reality of running a business then please tell me the name of yours, so I can avoid it at all costs.
      Stick your toys back in pram, internet hardman.

    • @DD-co1zn
      @DD-co1zn 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@arryc3947 you're either misrepresenting the TriMoto specialist, or conflating him with the previous mechanics. The specialist did not give an outright assessment of the core problem, just offered conjecture on what it might be without having spent the time, at Freddie's expense, going through the bike in its sorry state to properly diagnose. Giving him a heads up before the time/labour expenses on diagnostics started to mount.
      Pretending that the specialist doesn't know what he's talking about, but this youtuber does, is just wanton ignorance on your part. This guy has two bikes in his utility, TriMoto had what looked like 100+ in their shop. I'd love to see this guy work on Freddie's shitheap whilst having 100+ other jobs to do too.
      The irony is your comment is made on a video where you can clearly see what a shitheap state the bike is in, and you still feel confident libelling a specialist with a proven track record.
      The only internet hardman related to any of this is clowns like yourself in the comments section with no concept of the economic realities of running a business, and no comprehension either since the specialist explained the economic implications to Freddie in the first place.
      You'll notice the guy making this video isn't throwing the specialist under the bus, at least not explicitly. He should know better than to encourage plebs like yourself though.

    It's really interesting to see this 'crossover' video.
    Freddie, bless him, is a classic nouveau rider. He loves the machines and wants to do the work himself, but has other demands on his time and, to be honest, other skills.
    I'm very much the same. I rode a 1958 Ariel Huntmaster with the club for some years, but only because my step-dad was skilled and patient enough to keep it on the road.
    When he died, I knew I couldn't keep my Ariel on the road without giving it significant time to learn how and do the work. My time and expertise is elsewhere and the money to pay someone who really knows what they are doing is simply too much.
    I have huge admiration for those that make 'proper' motorcycling their life and, yes, I fully admit that I think those that both ride _and_ maintain are 'proper' bikers hehe.
    Me (and, I think, Freddie) are more 'riders' than 'bikers'. We love the machines and love the riding, but keeping our machines on the road - that true synergy of rider and machine - will forever be something someone else does.

Now I know all the ins and outs of running a shop , I get that . But the cost of taking ur bike into a shop to get fixed is imho too expensive. Also, the design of these "modern" machines the engines are ok imho. but the "tech" and style that surround it are ...unnecessary Dont get me started on my washing machine, light switches , heat pumps, car, I would like to see Freddies bike "restored "

Hard to try and diagnose from his videos so far as quite a lot of questions need answering before we could try. It seems to me like a few factors, recent top end rebuild, attempted theft, riding through the flood and also a cold snap. I suspect there has been a couple of things wrong with it just happened very close together. He did mention about low compression so be interesting to see it this was true. The old fashioned compression testing routine was to do an initial test and (if low) then inject a teaspoon of oil through the sparking plug hole. The test was then repeated, an increase in pressure indicated that there was a bore/ring/piston sealing fault.

    • @TheWurks
      @TheWurks  8 หลายเดือนก่อน +16

      Absolutely, wet test as a follow up is definitely on the cards. I wanted base readings to see how bad it might be first before exploring the electrical problems. Given the state of the idle running my gut is leaning to Cam timing check first here.

    • @leon0
      @leon0 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

      I think the test compression figures are for a warm engine anyway, when ally piston to steel liner tolerances have closed up. I don't see a major problem with the numbers you showed us.
      Thanks for doing this work.

    So pleased to see you’re looking at Freddie’s bike. He’s done so much on it to inspire others, myself included, it would be such a shame if it faded away as scrap parts. It’s fantastic the cycling community pulls together to make one last stand. Good luck with the fault finding, I have a sneaking suspicion given the compression seems okay, it might be more of an electrical issue, even water ingress on the starter button housing. H op e c it all gets sorted. 🤞🤞👍👍

    Life is a journey of experiences that either teach us lessons on what we need not do, and lessons on what we need to do. Freedie is in the midst of an experience that will teach him the importance of "Man and Machine". Like the body your soul dwells in and the need for maintenance and care, so does the machine your soul finds it's peace and joy.

    I admire your loyalty and appreciation of The Bonneville. I enjoy listening to your perspectives on motorcycles courtesy to Monika, and although you're tempted to replace your Bonneville you're putting your trust into one last attempt to have the bike fixed. Kudos to Joe if he can restore your bike.

    My thoughts were the same as yours about the fact that Kingdom Motorcycles had had the barrels off this bike and if there had been any significant damage to the bores I would have thought they would have spotted it. Obviously this bike has had significant wear and tear and is probably a bit tired but I didn't think that after a top end rebuild there would be anything catastrophic. I was really pleased when Freddie said he was letting you take the bike I'm looking forward to your further investigations.

      It's just basic maintenance that if you notice something fix it before you have a list a mile long. Some people just ride bikes an oblivious to things as they crop up.
      But in saying that most people I know who ride keep there bikes maintenance up to scratch and are aware when anything changes. Noises rattles anything out of the norm.

    • @leon0
      @leon0 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@TheWurksthe only other thing with potential sub-optimal compression is valve seats. Grinding the valves in would bring benefits but I agree with you the right starting place is now to look elsewhere.
      I'd be checking for crud and corrosion at every electrical connection. Especially with the flood business.I loved it when you went through the loom on your scrambler project. That was meticulous. Great. Then looking at the ignition pickup/cranks position sensor and coils, then at the MAP, temp and o2 sensors. Hopefully tuneECU will tell you about those though.
