- It will be remembered as one of the most sensational days in Grand Tour history. Chris Froome was 3 minutes 22 seconds behind Simon Yates in the pursuit of the maglia rosa leading up to stage 19 of the 2018 Giro d’Italia. The Colle delle Finestre, an 18.5km climb sat in the middle of the stage, was the only realistic option to attack the leaders with only two stages to follow. The stage was set for an unbelievable comeback and one of the strongest rides you’re likely to see for years to come. Here Chris explains what it took to pull off such a staggering attack.

One of the most amazing performances in the history of competitive road racing. Froome deserves respect way beyond what he receives. I’d love to see him nail one more major.

I think this is the greatest and most thrilling sporting achievement I've ever seen: a triumph of commitment, nerve and sheer grit. And they said Team Sky was boring!
This was a Merckx, Coppi, Hinault performance. With this action Froome won the right to sit with them on the table of the greatest riders of all time.

velo1337 I like the guy and he may be well down my list of faves, however, this stage is now historic in cycling. Very tactical and well played. His superior descending made all the difference.

@@blackmamba3060 Yep, that's basically how far back one had to go. Before that, Pantani in 1998. Before /that/, back in the 1980s.
Lemond in '89. That was a real comeback. He raced and won purely with talent. There's not much tactics in a TT. He raced the hardest stages of that tour without hardly any team support too.
Froome's breakaway win here was impressive. Can't deny that. There's not nearly enough go for broke breakaways in cycling anymore. Spontaneous and exciting racing has changed for the worst thanks to tech, race radio and power meters. Everything is planned and predictable.
No matter what they say about him he still puts the hard work in !!!!
Froome is a beast. This is one of my all time favourite rides.
Brings tears to my eyes every time and so inspirational to watch over and over again This was as good as when Froome blew the Tour de France wide open when he and Thomas with Sagan and Bodnar broke away on the sprinter's stage. Totally awesome and a great video edit.
I have been watching all the big bike tours for 60 years. This 19th stage was definitely one of the most spectacular I have ever seen. Chris Froom was amazing. I didn't think such an attack over 80 km was possible at the present time.

I don't get all the people who are calling Froome boring. If there's anyone who has a unique style it's him. He's far from predictable to. Great guy.
What an epic ride by Froome! A really stand out performance by Team Sky and CF. I've watched this several times, and I still can't get enough of it. Remains etched in the memory to-date, that attack on the Col de Finestre!

It was insane how the Giro developed, how it was a Yates exhibtion for 2 weeks in every climb and how Froomey went to crush them all in one stage, not forgetting that the day after this one it was a tough hilly day with all stakes at the table. Amazing Giro

Wonderful but sad stage for a Dumoulin fan. To see him win and then lose within the span of a few hours... But no one can deny that this was a stunning feat by Chris Froome!

Me too. I really don't like Chris Froome and I hated him on this day for destroying my dream about Simon Yates winning the Giro, but I also started respecting him for this insane performance, seeming impossible in modern pro cycling.

I remember checking the website an hour from end of stage and having to refresh because i though it was a mistake. Ran to the TV and started watching....I just couldn't believe what was happening. Froome has given me two of the greatest "WHAT THE HELL?!?!" moments in cycling. I really hope he's clean.

this is what cycling is all about attacking with all energy you got, when everyone thinks its impossible you can win, no other grandtour riders did this in the era of elecronic shifting.
I remember turning in the tv and I was like: Whut?
Haters are going to hate but this was so legendary. This was the best tour of recent time.
That was simply an Epic Ride!
Pierre St Martin, Ventoux, Pau etc etc. Some great Froome attacks but this was sensational by any standard and so richly deserved by the best of his generation. I hope he is able to win a 5th Tour maybe in 2021 now.If he can recover to this form he may well do. Chapeau to such a determined,ruthless rider yet a humble, decent and yes, honest human being.
That day is going to go down as one of the greatest comebacks in cycling history.
@clean cyclist It looked like Froome was pulling a Landis, but in reality Landis rode 150km solo against the peloton, where Froome rode 80km mostly against Reichenbach, who did much of the pacing and was waited for in the downslopes, with Dumoulin contributing and setting the pace in the final climb. Pinot contributed somewhat but stopped after Sestrieres because he was worried about Lopez, and Lopez and Carapaz never putting in an effort for 70km and spent the final climb participating in vain attacks.

Is there any rider out there aside from Froome who experienced 2 crashes, not feeling well for 10 days yet able to make a come back & won any grand tour?
@@proactivelifewithljc4000 Is it really spectacular that a trained athlete looked over everyday by medical staff may be able to recover from bruising and a few contusions over the course of a couple of weeks? It wasn't a story like Tyler Hamilton riding the whole Tour and finishing fourth overall with a broken collarbone.
Certainly a compelling video, very well done. I love some story-telling in sports reporting. And so effective an advertisement that I found myself having ordered 2 packs of their energy gel by the middle of the video.
Simply put, that was other-worldly. Magnificent in every respect.

Most awesome Grand Tour of all time. After 8 days he was dead and buried. What subsequently happened was a comeback that would make Lazarus blush. Stage 19 will go down in cyling folklore, probably the greatest achievement I've ever seen on a bike.

I’m Dutch but a huge fan of this man because as far as I know he’s humble and a real sportsman who is so determined and has such a high perseverance...
However people still exaggerate his stage win in the Giro because Dumoulin didn’t have a team to help him and it was 1v1 fight for about 80 kilometers and when you have nothing to lose and your gaining time you get so much motivation and energy and when you’ve everything to lose and losing time you get demotivated which causes that you lose energy.
But still a legendary performance.
There are few moments like this in all of sport. I’m missing pro cycling more than any other professional sport during this Coronavirus lockdown
I've watched this video more than 20 times. It's epic and inspiring. And form me, this is probably the most memorable moment in professional cycling.

Pantani…..the man who’s chain snapped was 126th in the race and 4 mins behind the last rider…..pantani won the race by nearly 6 mins….what a rider 💙 froome had an amazing race to win 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
