Whatever makes you feel more comfortable I say do it. I've seen that done along with carrying around a big pair of mens boots to sit outside the tent or car. If someone is watching you they can clearly see your alone. Not sure I would do either, but who knows. ~RVA~
Enjoyed your video. One thing I can add, is when you park always have the front of your car pointing 'out' (so back into your spot) If bad weather or someone try's to break in to your car, you have precious seconds to get started and leave the area and already pointing out and not wasting time backing up and turning around is a game changer. Hope no one ever needs those seconds, but nice to have peace of mind knowing your doing all you can to help if it's needed. Safe travels always :)
Good advice, but I wouldn't have wanted to park that way for this trip and not face those amazing mountain views to wake up too for this particular trip. I am cautious of who and what is around me all the time, but I will never let fear steer me with where and how I camp. Thats just not how I personally choose to live. Being prepared, taking precautions, having the right gear, being mindful of surroundings, is how I choose to roll with my adventures. But I totally respect how others choose to be out there and take precautions that make them feel more safe and prepared. Appreciate your advice. ~RVA~
For states that don't require a front license plate, backing into a space is a fast way to get a knock on your window from a cop. It seems like a no-brainer ip, but can cause more issues than it's worth in some places.
wasp spray at bedside.. sprays 20 feet straight line, and also car keys with panic button... also I always carry a small air horn for the 2 or 4 legged varmints... had a friend chase off a grizzly with 2 toots of her horn
I got black fabric to put on night time side of the reflexit so its all black looking from outside no one can tell theres anyone in..silver side is to reflect sun away in the day
Very smart! Love this idea! I have another video coming out soon on solo car camping since people are finding this one so helpful. Be sure to subscribe so it shows up on your news feed if your interested. Thanks Christine! ~RVA~
I car camp alone a lot. Best money I ever spent was for black weathershields for the car windows. Great to crack open windows for when you have to leave pet in car also, which cannot be avoided if you travel with pets. I also hang a used male hi-viz jacket from car side mirror and mens dirty used work boots on car bonnet. Little things that may help re; safety.
Lots of different techniques some people take extra chairs so there’s two chairs outside of the car. Some people do shoes, some people make a clothesline and hang up a men’s shirt. No matter what you choose it doesn’t really matter as long as you feel comfortable and safe.
Dang girl, you and I have a very similar set up. I have been using a 2010 Jeep Patriot as my RV for 11 years. I too use reflectix for window privacy screens and keep stuff cool/warm. I use my backpacking sleeping pad with a yoga mat under it. The dog sleeps on her own mat beside of me. I like that no one can see in, but you can take a peak out if needed. Yes, knife. I also have my SPOTx for communicating with my Dad. I love sleeping in my Jeep, is so much less complicated and comfortable. I do have my "jug" for peeing in the middle of the night. This girl is NOT getting out in the rain for that. Love your set up.
Admittedly I am not a in the car or even in a tent kind pee’r, LOL. I don’t think I have that good of flexibility or coordination. So I freeze my butt off literally and I have to pee a lot. I use the Guthooks app (FarOut) to send my gps location frequently as a I’m ok message. I really need an InReach. Great minds think a like with our set ups! ~RVA~
@@RVAHikerGirl happy to see you mention in reach... gonna set mine up this week as I'm headed solo from GA to wisconsin this month.... never done this b4 but soooo excited... it's my understanding that you can connect your phone to the in reach when you don't have cell service... hope that's true
@@bikingal4283 I have never heard of that before connecting your phone to an in reach. Depending on the model they will send out pre saved messages that you put in or a SOS call. You can check the weather, etc. The more expensive ones will allow you to text. Maybe its something new that will allow you to do that but I would imagine that would be super super expensive to do.
I have magnetic motion detector lights that I stick around my car and I have my little friend with me for safety. Not about having a hand-to-hand combat and its the great equalizer, makes me feel very safe.
I love the idea of a magnetic motion detector light. I'm going to have to look that up? I even like that idea for tent camping in certain areas. What brand do you use? ~RVA~
@@RVAHikerGirl energizer indoor outdoor motion activated path light. The magnets on them are ok but I have heavy duty magnets to help stick on the car. And not sure how well they would do with a heavy rain.
I have a similar set up. With the window covers I painted the outside flat black so it just looks tinted and not like someone is in there, and I ran black tape all the way around the edges for longevity. Then you can also use the reflective side or painted side if you need to control heat or cool. Have fun. I hope it helps
Great idea! Yes the black would help with discretion. The problem I have is storage with the reflectix. I try not to bend the pieces, so they don't get crushed. And to help with them fitting right and lasting longer. Appreciate you stopping by the channel.
@@RVAHikerGirl Yeah. I have the same issue with storage. I use an elastic chord to hold them to the side behind the wheel well against below the window. But I drive the extended blazer so I might have more room there. I also only bend my front and rear covers in half. I had them strapped to the car celing but the wiggling noise it makes when you drive is just to irritating.
@@freespeechorgetsilenced Yes I have a small little suv as you can see so when I put a lot of stuff in there for a trip so I try to keep them on the size or on top. I always seem to have something makes noise in my car. Its usually something in one of the storage bins rattling around.
I've used the sun shade from the dollar store, and put where my spare tire compartment is. So it shields the cold from coming from the underside of the car.
I love the idea of solo camping because I definitely like my own space! But if I’m hiking I really want to be with other people for safety. It would be so cool if there were meet-ups for solo campers, where we’d meet at a certain time and place for hiking. Then we could also have the option to camp overnight near each other. Wonder if there is any such place🤷♀️
Everyone is different. I love to solo hike and go out on 3 or 4 day solo backpacking trips. Some women go out much longer. But its what your comfort level is and what m makes you happy. I don't know of any group like that around. But if you research maybe you could find something or even create something like that yourself. Thanks so much for watching and commenting Feel free to come back and watch my videos anytime. ~RVA~

@@bikingal4283 I am a solo hiker and backpacker by choice and I also hike with friends and family.(check out my channel for more vids of those subjects) But I do prefer solo hiking because I actually like it and do feel safe and empowered by doing so. Same with camping, it feels amazing to do things on your own and accomplish what you set out to do.
Google hiking groups in your area there are many and it's a great idea to be able to hike or camp with people you can feel comfortable with sharing experiences
Hello from Down-under! I came across your channel because I went solo camping in the bush last night and freaked out and drove home! I’m researching these topics to be more informed and prepared and you’re already a great inspiration!
Hello from Australia! TH-cam is an amazing place to research on subjects just like this. So happy you found my channel and this video. Coozy for your charger. Simply brilliant! Great car set up. Your set up next to your bed made me think that a tiny cooler or insulated bag with hand warmers in it would keep phone/charger/water and whatever else needs to stay un-frozen warm enough. 🤷🏼♀️ just an idea that popped into my head. Take care!
Hey Unlikely Hiker! Thanks for stopping by and checking out my video! That's all the stuff I keep next to me at night that I am reaching for in the dark. I am going to get a few foldable rectangle storage bins to keep things in to prevent them from moving around and falling between the door and the seats. So I can reach right for the bin and know my headlamp is right on top. Appreciate your comment and support. ~RVA~
The Lentra hand warmers, which I buy in bulk on Amazon, are wayyyy better than Hot Hands. They stay warm hours longer than Hot Hands. I also plug a heated mattress pad into my Jackery to stay warm at night. I cover myself with it like a tent, and put another blanket over it to add weight. I also wear long John's under sweats, which keeps me warm.
Anytime! Always happy to help anyone else get out there and give this kind of traveling and exploring a go. I'll have another solo car camping video coming soon with some new hacks and gear to try out there. Thanks for stopping by and watching. ~RVA~
Just a safety note for women - we are under no obligation to be “nice” to strangers. Sometimes women tell people too much about their plans - don’t! A brief hi and keep walking. No need to talk, no need to share details, and keep strangers at arms length.
Yes, I agree. But in my mind, I wouldn't want to hype up a person who may already be agitated. I think it would be a case by case situation as these persons could be potentially irrational and confrontational. I never tell others my plans or post on social media where I am until I get back from the location. I never tell my plans and I always will say others are coming to meet me, etc. I take safety very seriously. I have even pretended to do Instagram and TH-cam lives showing the person, their tent and vehicle and gave details outloud so they can hear it. There are lots of things you can do to deter or make others think twice. Having a can of bear spray or bug spray at camp if you car camping is also a great idea. ~RVA~
@@RVAHikerGirl yeah, but being nice is a sign that you will be an easy victim. I know! Usually predators search for a nice girl with weak boundaries, not cold bitches!
I was going to suggest an insulated lunch bag for your phone but hadn't thought of hand warmers which are a great idea. Also if you can sleep with some light, glow sticks would give enough light that you wouldn't be blinded if you needed to blind an attacker with your flashlight. A large mag brand flashlight makes a great club too. I also saw the tents made to go over an open back hatch for extra space in warm weather. I love the Smokies! Be safe and have some fun for me, as I am no longer able to hike. Have f
Great idea on the big flash light to blind someone and the use of it as a club. Thanks for adding that for others to read. The reflectix cozy on the battery charger had been working out great in the colder temps. Yes I have seen those types of tents for the back of the car. I have actually been researching them, trying to choose which one to get. Appreciate you stopping by CindyKay. Come back anytime! ~RVA~
Hello Hiker girl! I am a senior lady, new to car camping this year & I just found your video. It is absolutely the most helpful to me out of more than 50 car camping videos-mostly by women traveling alone-that I’ve watched thus far. I have two questions: How do you have your lights attached inside your car? I bought two sets of that type of lights but have not yet figured out the best way to attach them. Also, if someone were to try to break into your car when you are sleeping, like rattling door handles to see if any are unlocked, do you have any kind of alarm or siren that might scare them away? Thanks so much and I look forward to the coming weeks of new videos. This one is full of great tips and was so helpful to me!
In this video I just had them strung up, not really pinned. However, I have researched how to hang the mini fairy lights and have found that people use wig pins in the ceiling to keep them up. 2 of them crisscrossed seems to work. I keep my keys at arm's length so I can hit the panic button on my car alarm if needed. I have recently also found on amazon motion senor lights for a great price that if an animal or person comes within a certain distance from the car they will illuminate. I am getting those for sure. Thank you for your very kind comments. I am always so very happy to help others get out there and enjoy the outdoors. If you have any other questions feel free to ask away. ~RVA~
I have been car camping, tent camping and back country backpacking. I can say I have never had anyone try to come near my car. Try to remember most theft is in cities with an empty car. Most murders are people the victim knew. (Gabby Petito).. Remember American media likes to try to scare women in particular. Go rebel and see that most people want to get along.
@@SinMore I too am a backpacker, long distance hiker, day hiker, 99% of the time I tent camp but I do car camp as well. A lot of solo women just feel safer when they have some sort of protection or are prepared in advance heaven forbid something does happen. I have ran into 2 very scary situations while tent camping with just me and another male at camp and no one else around for miles. I am a huge proponent for women to solo hike and camp and would never try to scare anyone from doing so. Being prepared for various situations that would play out is not only smart but also gives women a piece of mind. I will say just because something hasn't happened to you while out there, doesn't mean it doesn't happen. I am very familiar with the Gabby Petitio case, but women get raped and murdered by strangers all the time, not just by people they know. I agree media does try to scare people. I hope it never happens to another living soul but that's not realistic. Taking care of yourself, preparedness, taking precautions, knowing your surroundings is not only being a smart hiker and camper but being a smart woman in general in these times that we live.
AC Ricucci, I'll give you the best safety advice ever. IF you are sleeping in your car & someone is trying to break in, get into the driver's seat as quickly as you can, start & REV your engine, RIP OFF YOUR REFLECTIVES then chase the crims down the street in your car. Take it from me, it's fun watching them SCATTER!! If they go behind your car, reverse - make YOUR CAR YOUR ARMY TANK. The most important thing for us solo women is to STAY SAFE AT ALL TIMES no matter what. There are some real bad people out there. When they pick on me, I scare them SO MUCH that it teaches them a lesson - think twice before you go near a woman's car. Trust me, if they're trying to break into your car, you are dealing with a serious crim. Arm to arm combat is best avoided so USE the car as your armour. Safe travels....
My two Berners do a pretty good job of keeping me warm when car camp in the cold, as cold as 10-15 degrees F. Two sleeping bags some nights, one for me, the other for all three of us. Beautiful country out there in SW Virginia. I explored a little bit of it when I was in school at VT 2008-2010.
Fur babies are great at helping to keep you warm for sure. Blacksburg - there are so many great places to camp and hike up and down 81 for sure. Love SWVA. Thanks for stopping by J.A. If you get bored I have 150+ videos on my channel, LOL! ~RVA~

Ah! I hear you guys talking about car camping but I thought it was where you camped (in a tent) but on a family campsite with you car next to your tent. I didn’t realise it meant you actually sleep in your car! That’s neat! We don’t do that over here unless it’s a motorhome or Campervan. Great video! Toasty warm!! Great idea for the black out screens and the reflective insulation. Love it! Happy Hiking 🥾- Julia from the UK 🇬🇧
It's both Julia. Car camping is pulling your car up to a campsite and tenting or sleeping in your car where it's allowed. In National Forests, private lands or campgrounds such as this, you can sleep in your car, just not in National Parks. In the winter a lot of campgrounds are closed, so your access to camping places is limited unless you tent camp. And tent camping in below freezing temps isn't fun for me. I am not a huge fan of the super cold weather. So I came up with this idea to allow me to camp and hike year round even when it's really cold out there. ~RVA~
You will be impressed by the number of TH-cam creators from the U.K. Car camping and van dwelling, such a beautiful place to see, I love the gorgeous landscapes I get to explore when I watch their videos!
I'm In UK and thinking of starting this car camping .I'm 75 but good health so far.going to check my car out tomorrow may even change it for something bigger 😂

Thanks for the tip! I actually hang my hats, headlamp, jackets etc from the headrest. You can also hang a organizer from it to store things in too. I had never thought of removing those before, appreciate the suggestion. ~RVA~
I've been using my vehicles for camping for many years now - and I've still learnt some new ideas from your vid RVA. That tip with beefing the foil template up with black duct tape.....genius! Keeping stealth is one of my main worries as a solo female camper - it's important to check your vehicle from outside, see where light is escaping from and see how visible your set-up is from outside. I went down the route of heavily tinting my rear windows and hanging a shower rail between the front and rear seats - with a blackout blind hung from the shower rail. Great video RVA. I might do a similar one for UK conditions. I'll credit you though - I never take others ideas and pass them off as my own. TFS RVA x
Hi Donna! Stacking pillows against the back door helps with cold air coming in from the door handle and my bum doesn't get cold next to the wheel well cuz I have learned to stuff another pillow there as well. I am not the 1st to do a video such as this. Just trying to help others in my 3rd year on TH-cam and trying to find new ways to help give back to the amazing outdoor community that has greatly supported me. I am sure your video will help others as well who are looking to do this very thing. Definitely do it. I'd love to watch it as I do all of your vids. ~RVA~
@@RVAHikerGirl I have a car called a Berlingo, don't know if you have them in the States. Pal of mine removed the rear seats and installed a bench to sleep on and some basic storage, including a hidden Thetford haha. It's a little beaut! After 14 years of driving campervans it took a while to get used to the smallness of the Berlingo but I love it now. Cheaper to run, stealthy. So happy to see an Appalachian car “camper!” I fell in love with the Appalachians when I lived in Upstate SC. I’ve always loved them, but actually living near them solidified my love for them. In about a year, I’m going to be living in my car. After apartment management has raised my monthly rent $175 in the last 2 years, I will no longer be able to afford living here. This is the most inexpensive apartment in a relatively safe environment that had availability when I moved back up to NE Indiana. Nothing cheaper without a 2-8 year waiting list. I’m going back to the Appalachians after I get my car setup and move into it. Think I’m going to subscribe.
@@sharonrose1226 I’m an AT section hiker so it’s a great way to move along the trail. But I car camp everywhere dispersed sites, HipCamps, state & national parks too. Love it

Great job on showing how to dress up your vehicle for cold weather car camping! Looks like it should work really well. Keep getting out and having fun. Have a great day.
Thanks so much, Packsalot! I like that term "dressing my car". Seems very fitting. Don't worry I don't ever plan to stop exploring until the God Lord says to. ~RVA~
I know this is an old video but for the direction to get out when you have no signal part you can download areas as big as a whole state on Google maps for offline use
I was thinking also you could put a black sheet on top of your sleeping bag and wear a black cap or something like it. Then you would blend into the inside of the car much better having all black in side.
Hmm not sure I understand the blackout concept Angela. You can't see in during the day, only at night through the black screens. Even wearing all black you could still see a person's silhouette with the light on, all movements and tell someone is in the car. But with the reflectix I used in the video you can't see in at night. ~RVA~
I grew up in Virginia a little tiny town called Big Stone Gap beautiful beautiful beautiful driving through the Appalachian Mountains something nobody can describe you just have to go see it yourself you are amazing thank you thank you
Virginia is just a beautiful state. I never tire of driving country backroads and finding special places I have never been before. Thanks for stopping by Cathy. Too much light was coming in after I didn't cut them perfectly and well, I had black duct tape handy so that ended up working great. Glad you enjoyed the video. ~RVA~
The very beginning of this video is delightful 😊! I am officially jealous. My family told me to take my time and save for a really good used vehicle so that I can enjoy camping. Thanks for your time in sharing your adventures. I use a simple yoga mat and two nice sleeping bags. Love the cozy idea for your battery power. People that use solar power have said that on cloudy days the solar doesn't work as well. It's also apparently a good plan to have at least two larger batteries that don't run from your car, so that your electronics and cooking gear works properly.
I have been looking at Jackery and other batteries for power. One of those and the solar panels is a bit of investment so still researching. But everyone that I know that has them loves them. I have another solo car camping video coming out soon and I plan on doing more of these since people are finding these videos helpful. Be sure to subscribe so the video show up in in your news feed. Isn’t it great when you can find stuff from the dollar store that works for your vehicle and you don’t have to go out and spend a ton of money? I get my string lights every year at Christmas time that I use for the whole next year from the dollar store for tent camping. Love saving $
Do you remember the story of princess and the pea? The stacked mats reminded me of that story. The reflectix material is awesome stuff. You can do a lot of cool things with it like cook coozies.
I am that princess, sort of! I am such a light sleeper and can feel everything. If there was a pea under that mattress I would feel it. Most SUV's are slanted so I had to raise up my foot end to be level and it all helps with insulation with the R added r value of the sleeping mats too. Cook pot cozy's, dehydrated meal pouches, mattress pads, you can even put Refletix in your shoes to keep your feet warm. Hundreds of uses for sure! Love that stuff! ~RVA~
The cozy for your battery bank is clever, but it’s simpler to slip all your electronics in the foot of your sleeping bag in cold weather. Mine are organized in a tiny Osprey roll bag.
@@johnnamaravelis4093 not for me. I toss and turn like a rotersserie chicken all night. I might put clothes in there but nothing hard like a power bank. Doesn’t feel good rolling over on that in your hip or shoulder. 😂
I think it's the silver color that helps heat up the vehicle in the wintertime by catching the light. But if you didn't need it for the cold winter temps like I do and were just using it for privacy, you could paint it. I haven't had an issue with anyone bothering me. It's more about being prepared and knowing what to do if that ever should happen. Thanks for stopping by and for the suggestion. ~RVA~
I car camped last year from Delaware to Florida I stayed in state parks, i'm 60 and just been glamping/camping for about 6 years, mostly in my travel trailer, I've never primitive camped and would like to try it sometime. Honestly, I just love car camping it's so simple and nimble before I leave home everything is already set up and all I have to do when I get to camp is crawl in the back if I want to and go to sleep, i have the reflextic and socks for the windows, I also bought 2 insulated curtains and pvc conduit for rods (cut curtains in half and sewed pockets for rod) and I put them behind front seats and back window for extra insulation it works great in Florida it went down into the upper 20's one night. How about a Garmin InReach or something similar for the areas where you have no cell service.
It sounds like you have a great set up that works well for you. Thank you for the suggestions. I am thinking of getting a USB electric blanket for nights that it gets down in the teens and 20's when I am winter. camping. That would really feel great! A Garmin would work well for anyone who camps, hikes or goes to remote areas. ~RVA~
So many great ideas! Love the duct tape trick for light! I need to get me a neck knife. We’re doing a lot of tent camping right now (leaving for another trip today), but we really need to outfit our car like this!

I do use one of those chargers for my electronics but I do worry about my battery going dead using the cigerette lighter for items when I am camping and not moving my car for a while. I do have jumper cables but you need to have another car in the area to jump you. Sometimes I'm in remote locations where I don't see a sole. I start my car if I am using the outlet in the rear of my car to blow up my air mattress. Have you ever had an issue with your battery going dead?
Love your setup. Great ideas from you and also all of the comments. My mom lives alone also and asked me if she should get a gun or pepper spray. I took her two cans of wasp spray. It shoots 20’ away so you don’t have to get close to your target and it’s a white sticky foam. Warning it can cause blindness but it will stick to the target and doesn’t blow back in your face in the wind!!!!

I’ve never gone car camping in my life but now that I have a Jeep Compass and recently moved to Central Virginia I REALLY want to give it a try. The main thing is a fear of all the possible things that could go wrong…what if my car dies on a road where I have no cell phone service? Or get a flat tire and I’m out in the middle of nowhere? Or what if someone realizes I’m a woman traveling alone and tries to break into my car in the middle of the night to harm me? Have you ever experienced any type of scary/emergency situation while out on your own?
What if you fall on the sidewalk trip and hit your head? I mean honestly, you can die at home in your sleep or out there doing what you love. I don't live life-based on what-ifs. I am an adventurer at heart and love traveling, hiking, and camping. Being prepared, having the right gear and knowing how to use it ,gives you peace of mind. Worried about no phone service, get a Garmin in reach that has an emergency sos button and allows you to send messages to loved ones. Worried you will get a flat tire, have a spare, and know-how to change it if that happens. People will come along at some point no matter where you are. This video shows what I do for safety - pepper spray and a knife. Get a gun and a permit to carry if that makes you feel better. It's all about what makes you feel safe. Yes, I have had a couple of scary situations, but not while solo car camping but rather solo backpacking and spending the night in my tent. But I handled it and I am still alive to tell about it lol. I have a Podcast episode coming out on April 2nd on Jesters Section Hiker Podcast where we talk about solo fears, how to overcome them, and use them to your advantage out there. Give that a listen if you are interested. Hope this helps ~RVA~

new sub here... have been watching vids for about 3 years now getting ready to solo camp...thank you for the hint about the black duct tape... have been trying for months to figure out how to repair my short cutting skills... I am picking up a tear drop camper next month and plan to car camp to Wisconsin to pick it up... have never been on the road that long solo b4 but soooo ready.. I will check your links as I would like to know where you got some of your items, thank you for a good down to earth no frills vid on female solo car camping... and btw your dimples are adorable (I'm biased, daughter and new granddaughter have dimples) also hope you don't mind I left a couple of remarks and hints below for those asking you some questions that I had in the past....

All comments and suggestions are always welcome in an effort to help everyone that may be looking for info. Wishing you an epic adventure out there! ~RVA~
Nice setup Jacqueline, and some very good tips. I have an SUV that I turned into a no build stealthy, off road camper. No basic building skills needed but some good ingenuity and a whole lot of sense of adventure. Be safe my friend!
Hey Fuji FatBike! Just wanted to make sure you saw my thank you message on my Buy Me a Coffee page. You are very kind and I greatly appreciate your amazing support! Thanks so very much! No build is the way to go for me right now. And a good budget-friendly way to set up your vehicle. Hope you enjoy all of your adventures car camping too! Stay warm out there! ~RVA~
I had a black one before this one. The only reason I was able to get this one was the other broke down in another state while I was traveling during covid and there were no mechanics to work on the other one and I needed to get home. So I traded the other one in on this one. I do like the white better than the black. But I have always been a lighter car colored person anyway. Trying to find cars now is expensive. The prices are way up. Its crazy.
Thank you! Its so fun. I have tweeked my set up since this video a little. I have several different set ups depending on trip length and time of year. Happy camping! ~RVA~
@@MrAlottolose I didn’t have one in this car but now I have a Subaru and I do have one. Do you have a screen that you put on your roof to keep bugs out?
While I much prefer a tent, there are times that car camping comes in real handy. Especially for traveling and a quick pullover or when the weather isn't great. And when its really cold. Thanks a bunch for the sub and welcome to my TH-cam family! Looking forward to chatting again with you soon. ~RVA~

Yep, I have thought about the rain guards. And many other things to tweek this set up. Like some collapsable storage containers for the back and some hanging storage on the back of the seats. And maybe even an electric blanket for really cold nights if I get a Jackery or other powersource. Hope you doing well John! ~RVA~
Love the lights you have set up in your car. Looks like you have a great set up. I don't like sleeping sloped either. Hope you stay toasty warm. Good idea about wrapping your charger in the reflectix. Good tip about the condensation. I've never seen the black out screens. We have reflectix cut for our windows too from our trip to Alaska and Canada. It worked perfectly. Very good safety tips. Thanks.
Hey there Living the Silver Life! Thanks for stopping by. Yes those screens are called sock window covers and are great for keeping the mosquitos out and the breeze still coming though. Love reflectix! I have so many other projects I want to use it for. ~RVA~
Welcome to the channel. I have 200 videos on camping and hiking in the VA, WV, MD, NC, KY, and OH. Check out the video on the SUV tent I use. It would work equally good on your Subaru. If you ever have any questions just let me know I am happy to help. ~RVA~
Thanks Big Dog! Happy to see you back, you've been gone too long, LOL! Yes, summer car camping = no bueno! Agreed winter is the best time for car camping. ~RVA~
I love your setup, but I am thinking of getting some reflectix for my front windshield for summer and put it outside in the winter to help with heat and defrosting. When I get home to US for awhile, I plan on getting a Subaru Outback for car camping and the Pow Wow highway. I plan on drone flying over a river that my Tribes reservation is located for further hydrology studies. Reason for the outback is my husband is 5’10 and I need to make sure he fits when he is with me. You should get a Garmin for when you are in areas that do not have cell service. I do not know what it is called, but it is all over the hiker videos. I do not do any other social media then TH-cam, so no private messaging for me! Oh the other thing you need is the hatchback tarp so you have a bit more outdoor area when it rains. Take care and stay safe on the trails
Hey there! How would you attach the reflectix to the outside of the car so it wouldn't blow away, just curious? I've never thought about putting it on the outside of the car, interesting idea. Yes a Garmin is on my list, just wish they weren't so expensive. And then you have to pay for the monthly service too. I wish for safety they were more affordable for people. Thanks a bunch for watching, come back anytime. I love talking all things camping and hiking. ~RVA~
You have a great setup, Jacqueline. Comfy, cozy and safe. Great tips and advice, love the cozy for the battery bank, fantastic idea! Thanks so much for sharing - happy adventuring! -Jody
Hey hey Jody! Reflectix is amazing stuff! I will be making cozy's for everything! I am gonna use it in my heated outdoor cat house too to insulate it for some feral friends I take care of. Thrilled that you liked the video. ~RVA~
@@RVAHikerGirl I have a giant roll of Reflectix sitting in the garage, I need to get busy tracing windows and cutting for our SUV. I'll use the scrap pieces for cozies👍
@@JC.Journey pot cozy's, dehydrated meal pouches, I'm gonna make one for my cell phone too. I have even heard of ppl tracing their foot insoles and put some in their shoes in the winter to keep their feet warm. Endless possibilities!
Great ideas and tips. I just retired and plan to buy a Subaru Outback and do lots of solo car camping mixed in with some Airbnbs. I live in Charleston SC and love the blue ridge mtns. Parents live in Waynesville NC. I bought the Exped MegaMat 10 which looks similar to yours. I wonder how you made the surface/ hump under it flat when the back seat is down? I was thinking of placing a thick exercise/yoga mat down first. Ideas? Also, do you ever use a portable heater when very cold or fan when hot? Thanks
If you look at the video you will see a yellow Thermarest folding mat. I use that one and a orange Nemo folding mat to take out some of that angle. Blankets can help too. I also can adjust the floor board in the back to a different angle to help. I have a Mr Buddy heater that I use outside of the car and for sure I use a fan in the warmer months. I prob have 5 different fans I use for tent & car camping. USB chargeable hand warmer or a couple of them work great in your sleeping bag or to keep in your pockets when it’s cold.
Great set up and very beautiful spot. I like your storage and items you brought. Great job on the reflectives. True words on safety. I love solo too. I have a similar deal when I sleep in the car.
I need to still tweek a few things here and there Nicole. I need a few small pillows to prop against the door on the side where I am sleeping to help insulate the cold coming in through the door handle. A few little collapsable storage bins would be helpful in the back next to my mattress. I want to hang some small light weight lights on the ceiling but trying to figure out how to do that without damaging my car ceiling. It's fun having a new project to play around with. Thanks for stopping by my friend as always. ~RVA~
That is the best place to start in a campground where you have other people and facilities. That way it gives you time to learn your gear and to feel comfortable and confident in your abilities. Then as you go out more and more you will feel amazing. Best of luck to you and let me know if you need anything.
The window screens and the reflectex, especially if you have a windshield shade in the winter advertises that you are sleeping in your vehicle and it invites curiosity by police and shall we say, less savory characters. Those screens that go over the inside and outside of the door is a particularly dangerous advertisement. Cover the entire outside surface of the reflectix with the black duct tape and that will help reduce how obvious it is you are camping out as well as still being as flexible as you need for you to roll up or be able to bend. Also, get those window deflectors that go over each of your windows so you can roll them down partially and not have rain come in is a great way to hide that the windows are cracked when someone goes by. One other way to help you stay warm is to just get a good old-fashioned hot water bottle with a knitted cover to have inside the sleeping bag with you. One video I saw where they were camping into the negative nopes said that putting it in your armpit was the best way to keep your core temperature warm. The same works in the summer as you can easily put crushed ice in them to help keep you cool.
I'm not really worried about police seeing me because I don't camp anywhere illegally. I stay in dispersed camping /boondocking locations, state and national parks, and hipcamps. I see people use reflectix every day pretty much. Van lifers, SUV campers, people in cars, RV's, its just the standard now. I live near state and a National Park so everybody around here is just use to see that. The black screens are a functional to keep the bugs out. My car is locked, if someone tries to break in while I am sleeping I have means of protection. I have used the Nalgene water bottle methodand it may work well for some but its really not for me. I have a mummy bag and I am a side sleeper. I toss and turn a lot at night and it just gets in the way and keeps me awake. I use a warm sleeping bag liner now. I have one that has a battery that warms up and one that adds 25 degrees to my sleep system. I also have a rechargeable hand warmer that I put inside my sleeping bag as well. I won't let fear of others ever prevent me from getting out there SUV or tent camping. You can take precautions, be smart and listen to your instincts. If something doens't feel right then just leave the area.

Great video! I’m wondering if you’ve thought about a satellite communication device? I’m not even sure if they are phones or what, but I see them in camping videos sometimes.
I have debated it for years. The initial cost then the monthly cost is pricey.. Its a lot of money for safety. I wish was more affordable for everyone. I just haven't done it yet, even though I know I need to as much as I am in remote places without signal. ~RVA~
I would love to do this this looks so much fun to explore the mountains and the hidden valleys and all that good stuff you'll be seeing out there I would love to do that the only problem is I would definitely have to find me somebody to either team up with or find me a mate because I think I would get very depressed not having anybody to talk to.....😊
99.9% of the time I take a tent as well. But there are a few occasions where car camping has come in handy, especially when its really cold or I am traveling and don't have a lot of time for camping. ~RVA~
Thank you. The tape works so well with those little gaps from imperfect cuts. Keeps the light out more and helps the reflectix stay in place. Thanks for watching. ~RVA~
The area is so isolated. Seems a bit scary, especially at night. But I've never solo camped, ever. Great advice about letting folks know exactly where you are too. New subbie here!

I don't go out for very long. Even though I want to. I am a backpacker and tent camper as you can see from the other 160 videos on my channel. I even have a hatch tent that attaches to my SUV, LOL I have a video on that too. I prefer a tent oversleeping in the car, especially this time of the year because it's so hot. You can get a Jackery or Blue Yeti or other companies make them that is a larger charger that you can keep your electronics charged or use electrical cords if need be. Most of my lights are battery-powered. I prefer them because the batteries last forever in them. That way I don't have to use my power banks for them I and I can save that power for other things. You can make Reflectix cozy's and even wrap your power banks in clothes or blankets to keep prevent them from losing power. great video! regarding safety...have you ever had any "close calls" with sketchy people? i am planning a cross country car camping trip by myself, staying at state park campgrounds. i usually get 1 of 2 responses when i tell people. either " omg that sounds like so much fun" or "omg you are crazy. it is not safe to go by yourself". what are your thoughts?
I haven't had any sketchy situations while car camping, only when I have been solo hiking and solo backpacking. But it's only a matter of time before a situation may pop up. People tell me the same thing about solo hiking. You only have 1 life to live, and I am gonna live it doing what I love. I really don't pay any mind to what other people think I should be doing or not doing, honestly. I just do my thing and am happy doing it. When solo camping, I bring 2 lawn chairs and set them both up. 1 chair shows you are alone, 2 chairs will give the appearance of 2 people.
~RVA~
Always have an exit. Or at least flood them with high beams
Yea, but if enough room isn't at the back of the vehicle could spell trouble, think about it,
For states that don't require a front license plate, backing into a space is a fast way to get a knock on your window from a cop. It seems like a no-brainer ip, but can cause more issues than it's worth in some places.
Or you can just reverse over them.
wasp spray at bedside.. sprays 20 feet straight line, and also car keys with panic button... also I always carry a small air horn for the 2 or 4 legged varmints... had a friend chase off a grizzly with 2 toots of her horn

Great idea on the big flash light to blind someone and the use of it as a club. Thanks for adding that for others to read.
Facts!

I purchased vehicle front window sun shades from the Dollar Store, made from same material for my truck camper shell. Works great!
~RVA~
Princess and the pea! 😂🤣
@@KrizAkoni Yep, I can relate!
I would either spray paint the reflectix black so it just looks like there is a tint, and I think people would be less likely to bother you.
~RVA~

I like your cozy and comfortable set-up and really like you addressing the safety concerns. My favorite time for car camping is winter ..
~RVA~
Just found your channel and your intro music got you my SUB. before you said a word. Looking forward to seeing more.
🤘🏼Well that’s pretty cool! Thanks so much! Happy to have you apart of the channel!
You have a great setup! Thanks for the safety tips and book recommendation!
Thank you and so very glad it was helpful to you. I will have another video with hacks, tips and new gear soon. Stay tuned.
~RVA~
~RVA~
I’m going camping alone for one night. My first time and I’m a little scared. I’ll be in a camp ground super close to a town. Gotta start somewhere!
That is the best place to start in a campground where you have other people and facilities. That way it gives you time to learn your gear and to feel comfortable and confident in your abilities. Then as you go out more and more you will feel amazing. Best of luck to you and let me know if you need anything.
How do you power your fairy lights? They are very pretty and I like the hominess it makes.
They are battery-powered. They also make a bunch that are USB powered as well but I like the battery ones better. They last forever. ~RVA~
Hot water bottles are sooo good
Great Video, RVA!!! Excellent information for the car camper. FABULOUS!!! 💯😃🙌🏼
Thanks Queen! You are the resident expert on this subject. Go check out her vids if ya'll want more info on car camping. Happy that you enjoyed this one and thanks a bunch for your support! ~RVA~
I am reading AWOL on the Appalachian trail right now. Always up for book suggestions!
Thanks Chrissy! Love curly up in my sleeping bag with a good book to read, especially one about the AT! Thanks for watching. ~RVA~
Im quickly/slowly getting there but its a great feeling to be inspired by you. You're like a " down2earth natural prozac"
👌.You calm my nerves-make this looks so easy.No disrespect to men but, theres a sense of warmth& connection getting this info from a gal vs. a guy, but every bit helps.👍
This is probably my favorite comment of all time! Thank you so much Mary! Us girls have different perspectives than our male counterparts on gear and what works for us in the outdoors. I am very happy you enjoyed the video and that it helped you. That's what its all about for me, is helping others and giving back to my outdoor community. ~RVA~
NICE JOB on window blacking out interior light for stealth camping.
Thank you, the more and more I am out there, you realize things that work and don't work and new things that make your camping so much better. Trail and error. Thanks a bunch for stopping by my channel, come back anytime to check out my other videos. ~RVA~
~RVA~
I would love to do this this looks so much fun to explore the mountains and the hidden valleys and all that good stuff you'll be seeing out there I would love to do that the only problem is I would definitely have to find me somebody to either team up with or find me a mate because I think I would get very depressed not having anybody to talk to.....😊
Understand. I relish the quiet and simplicity. I’m not out alone for than a week usually before heading home only to go back out again.
Great overview of your car camping setup. I usually take a tent, but have thought about making a setup to use in my small SUV.
99.9% of the time I take a tent as well. But there are a few occasions where car camping has come in handy, especially when its really cold or I am traveling and don't have a lot of time for camping. ~RVA~
Great idea for the refletix gaps with the tape!!
Go where you feel comfortable camping. I like remote primitive locations for both tent and car camping. But go to a campground with lots of people if that makes you feel better. State & National Parks are a great place to camp with facilities. Thats the beauty of car camping, you have so many different places you can stay. So happy to have you apart of the channel. Welcome to my TH-cam Family. If you are on Insta check me out over there too. I have another solo car camping video coming out very soon. ~RVA~
@@RVAHikerGirl YAY 😁 Thanks for the reply @RVA Hiker Girl! I'm in Virginia too, so I'll take that advice and check out some of the camp grounds to get my feet wet! 😉 Will check out your IG too! Camp on! -Val
@@vs0063 One of my fav places I will share with you to camp is North Bend campground on Kerr Lake. There are great places in NC around the same lake too. I have videos on all of these amazing places. But your car can get pretty hot in the summertime. I opt for a tent in the warmer months.
Think of how much of a deterrent a gun on your hip would be. I have knives, mace, etc but a gun will always top all of those.
Everyone has difference ways they choose to protect themselves. Different backgrounds and different abilities. Guns aren’t for everyone. I grew up with guns and have a few myself.
@@RVAHikerGirl oh I understand lol. My dad was law enforcement and he always said don't bring a knife to a gunfight lol!!!! Especially in today's society
Smart! What is the longest you have been out in your car? I have been struggling with how to protect my batteries in the cold. Even my little USB chargers (and what rock did I crawl under and miss usb lights? I have battery lights and fans and solar fairy lights. But I have half a dozen little usb chargers that I could charge while driving and some are 20k and 50k …..something. Not watts, surely! In my 60s, I will be shocked if I don’t have as many koozy’s around. LIB! MR Cool!
I have another solo SUV vid that might interest you showing gear, food, and my fav hacks to help at camp. Let me know if you have any other questions. Always happy to help. ~RVA~
Hi I just subscribed! Love your help. Thanks
???? How do you keep the car battery from draining with the doors or hatch open????
There’s a switch by my back mirror that cuts the lights off. So you can open the doors and the lights don’t come on and you don’t use any power. Most cars have that switch somewhere in your car. Thanks so much for subscribing and welcome to my TH-cam family! I had another video I did on solo car camping that might interest you that just came out last week.Looking forward to chatting more! ~RVA~
@@RVAHikerGirl awesome! I’ll try that when it gets dark. I haven’t car camped yet but plan to soon. Kind of scared

Thanks for sharing! I really need to car camp more as I tackle sections of the trail farther away from home.
Absolutely! It can be used as a mobile base camp for sectioning. Sometimes I am just too tired to drive home after a long hard section, so this is now a really good option for me. Thanks, Lynne for stopping by and watching! ~RVA~
great video! regarding safety...have you ever had any "close calls" with sketchy people? i am planning a cross country car camping trip by myself, staying at state park campgrounds. i usually get 1 of 2 responses when i tell people. either " omg that sounds like so much fun" or "omg you are crazy. it is not safe to go by yourself". what are your thoughts?
I haven't had any sketchy situations while car camping, only when I have been solo hiking and solo backpacking. But it's only a matter of time before a situation may pop up. People tell me the same thing about solo hiking. You only have 1 life to live, and I am gonna live it doing what I love. I really don't pay any mind to what other people think I should be doing or not doing, honestly. I just do my thing and am happy doing it. I have long stopped trying to convince others that being alone is perfectly safe as long as you are prepared and pay attention to your surroundings. Not sure if that answers your question or not, LOL!
@@RVAHikerGirl yes. that helps. thank you! i feel the same. i don't want to NOT chase my dreams just because there is a chance of something bad happening. thanks again

I have
When you meet men don't be so quick to open up about your details like finances where all you stay etc
Trust your intuition
There's alot of people out doing this right now
I had one go from perfect gentleman to becoming sexual
Then stalking all my areas I stay
I had to leave that area
Men are scary especially once you reject them
& they know you're on your own
I opened my big stupid mouth trusting him too quickly telling him some of my areas I stay in
Thankfully not all & in an area I was planning to leave from in couple days
Definitely made me uncomfortable & in 😱 fear
Of him coming up on me while I'm sleeping
& you never really know people intentions or whats in their heads
You can't trust men to know where your house is when you're on your own let alone when you're solo out in open
Carry protection pepperspray stungun knives & gun
Watch your surroundings
I added him on my social media too so he'll be deleted
Great setup!
Thank you! Love to car camp! Budget friendly and do convenient!
