Just to get ahead of the comments - I know my camera is too bright and the colors are weird. I'm having to shoot on my phone while my camera is in the shop, but I'm currently consulting with a professional color specialist and my videos should look better going forward!

The thing that confused me most about the Pixar releases was that Lightyear went to theatres. I'm not saying it's a bad movie but it always felt like a movie designed to go to streaming. It didn't feel like a Pixar original as much as a corporate mandated title to try and squeeze a little more juice out of the Toy Story franchise. Soul and Turning Red especially feel like more of your classic Pixar and it sucks they didn't get the chance to be seen by more people because they were dropped straight onto DIsney+.

    • @MACMAMI
      @MACMAMI ปีที่แล้ว +2

The reason is simple: both Iger and Chapek cynically feel that if they don't reinforce their intellectual property robustly enough, people will somehow forget their brand. They're insulting the intelligence of many of their most loyal fans and appreciators by stripping parks like EPCOT away of their educational value and timelessness and replacing it with cheap, desperate overtures to brands like Frozen and Ratatouille, as well as re-making many of their most beloved films for a cheap pop as opposed to investing in more new original storytelling, concepts and characters as well as Sequeltitis. They're like, "Hey: people like Buzz Lightyear! Let's make a sequel centered around him!" and assuming it'll sell off of name recognition and brand alone. Yet they learned the hard way via this and underwhelming returns for the final film in their recent new "Star Wars" trilogy that name recognition and branding alone does NOT guarantee success.

I was just at DisneyWorld. The funniest moment was when my sister-in-law and her husband purchased a Genie Plus pass for Splash Mountain. I didn't. Yet, due to the short lines and my wife and I just walking faster, we actually were able to get on AHEAD of them. They paid $30 for the honor of being five seconds slower in line.

An Obi-Wan movie (with a great script and excellent production) would have been an easy billion-dollar hit for SW, in my opinion. So many fans had been looking forward to it for a long time and we’re now several years removed from the last SW movie so fans were ready. As long as it was well done, I think the fans would have flocked to see it. Blindly making everything fit the streaming model was shortsighted.

I grew up in Florida as an annual pass holder. Went to Disney at least once a month all the way up through undergrad. Left FL for a career. In 2016 I took my wife and daughter to Disney for the first time. It was crazy expensive, but worth it because we all had fun. Went back in 2021 and it was the worst thing ever. Overcrowded like I had never seen, half the rides were down. Waited in line for 2 hours for a one minute ride. In 2 days we got on maybe 7 rides. Between travel, rental car, hotel, food, tickets, not even close to worth it. I will not pay extra to ride a ride that I used to be able to get on with just a ticket. Disney is out for this family until they get things under control and make the trip worth it again.
I get the raise in ticket prices, etc... but at some point the price you pay becomes more than the value you get. Disney made the choice that they would rather have people come one time and spend a fortune than to have a consistent base of customers who spend money 3-4 times a year. Having to pay for tickets/hotel/food are all expected costs, but you add in ridiculous prices to just get on a ride and it is way too much for way too little.

Many of the current financial issues Disney is experiencing is due to Iger's obvious goal of buying every IP and studio he can get his hands on, and massively overspending to do so. This whole mess has its source in Iger. Chepek just made it worse.

Another big hurdle Iger will have to work on is how the Disney content process burns through the effects industry. I love Marvel and Star Wars shows, but if the way they create the work is crushing people's souls at the same time it ends up with inferior results, then things have to change. This could be rough for him, considering a large part of the current landscape is the result of his own decisions in his first tenure.

Awesome video Dan. The company’s expenses far outweigh the profits. Simple math. The outrageous company expenses were implemented during the Bob Iger era. This is a course correct that all the streaming companies HAD to do. There’s too many streaming platforms for the amount of potential customers. Remember how many Blockbuster Video stores existed during the boom of home video? Tons of layoffs are coming for everyone. Too many people working in the same industry while other industries no longer exist in the U.S.-recipe for disaster for any society.

I remember being unsure in Iger when he took over the company, but I was just happy that Eisner was finally gone. Iger proved to be a steady hand at the company that actually valued the creative's at the company. Chapek seemed to be a return to the Eisner era, too focused on making money without making sure you were releasing a top quality product. Given time, I feel we would have seen more and more of the dark years of Disney, like in the mid-90's up until the middle 2000's.

    The whole streaming war thing...
What I miss is having a good back catalogue of older stuff on Netflix and Prime.
The issue with every movie company having its own streaming platform is its impossible to subscribe to everything.
It must be a better business model for movie studios to package their back catalogues and license them out than to set up, host and promote their own streaming services. I see MGM have their own and Lions gate! I mean.. wtf?
I know with the rise of the free services with ads like Pluto, freevee and in the states you have Tubi but the majority of the movies are nonsense.
I fear good stuff is going behind pay walls of doomed services.
I was shocked when Amazon bought MGM but they put the back catalogue behind a second pay wall instead of rolling that stuff into prime.
    Something has to happen soon.

@@jameshogg601 you know what was worse than the sequel trilogy? Kenobi and Book of Boba Fett. Properties concerning popular IP that the execs would keep on a super tight leash because they're beloved characters, which ironically leads to them being awful soulless works of trash.
Also, Star Wars isn't the only Disney property.
They screwed up with the films that followed TFA. TLJ wasn't a terrible movie, and ROS was bad, but not as bad as people love to scream about. The problem with that trilogy was the lack of a clear plan and direction, which is on Kathleen Kennedy.
But anyway, that's not the point. For better or for worse, Iger puts the creative workers in charge of the creative work. This means that the work will be less like soulless conveyer belts of content and more like actual stories written with a vision in mind.
When you get projects with less intervention from the higher ups, you get something like Andor.

Wonder if this is happening in all countries - Disney + is going up from 12.99 to 14.99 here in NZ - guess they will look to recoup those streaming losses by putting prices up

I think if Avatar 2 isn’t a grand slam home run let alone if it bombs, a lot of films scheduled to be released in 2023 and 2024 are going to get the Sonic treatment.

The failure of one person at PWC shouldn't reflect on the company's ability to do its job. There was not an error in vote tabulation, it was a single-point failure that was completely due to one person not doing his job backstage.

    Still loses 1.5 billion? Wow.

I don't even think the Genie plus thing is that difficult, keep it as a paid thing fine whatever....BUT make it like the old fast pass system where you could have THREE reservations at a time and not just one which is outrageous....yes I know with G+ you technically can have more than one but not the same way the old fast pass system did it. you should 100% be able to make 3 reservations before you even enter the park and i feel like thats a very easy change that would make ppl happier with G+

One of the many priorities Bob iger has right now is making everyone happy with Dismey again both inside and out. There’s no chance in hell he fires anybody and he’ll definitely want to do something anout the parks too.
In any case it feels so good to be vindicated about all the streaming bs. I’ve been sticking with physical media all this time and will continue to do so any chance I get. Because it means that no matter what happens I’ll always have that movie, show, or game I love. With streaming when stuff like this happens an executive can take away your stuff in an instant even though your paying for it.

I’m surprised Chapek lasted *this* long.
His bungled response to Florida’s draconian laws caused most people inside Disney to openly revolt against him… and then his attempts to course-correct caused Florida’s draconian lawmakers to openly revolt against Disney.
And replacing Disney’s wonderful FastPass with demands of *”HAND OVER YOUR WALLETS!”* was unbelievably shortsighted and greedy.
And his micromanaging of various projects from Marvel, Star Wars, Pixar, etc. left all their brands damaged.
Is he also the dude who cancelled *The Owl House* …?
Anyway, the dude’s an idiot who, somehow, failed upwards.
But that’s the problem with management in general. Smart people don’t want those jobs, because they understand those jobs are difficult. But stupid people want those jobs, because they *don’t* understand those jobs are difficult. (Basically, Dunning-Kruger…)
