      It would be totally different playing nowadays. Back when I played these games, there was limited to no access to walkthroughs and figuring out these goofy puzzles in King's Quest, Police Quest, Leisure Suit Larry, Quest for Glory, and a bunch others was done with friends and talking to other people that played the games. I'd get stuck for weeks on parts of these games, but getting through and winning was so rewarding. The whale's mouth in KQ4 still gives me chills.

    We had version 1.0 Hero's Quest, when it came out. My dad used to get free games from his job for some reason, I think it was some sort of promotion for the various hardware he was working on. Game took me forever, because I got confused by the map early on, and completely forgot about the Antwerp section, so I played the rest of the map for months not knowing where to go. When I found that section again, I was able to easily fight my way through and win.
    I'll never forget the music it plays during the rake scene.

  • @blueskirt5842
    @blueskirt5842 3 ปีที่แล้ว +8

    This is your best video. Period.
    You spent the entire video explaining everything: presenting all the runners, detailing all of the history, the major differences between versions, the VGA remake, the marathon, all the skips, all the rules, all the mechanics behind key presses and frame rules, all the tricks, all the possible time saves, all the crazy yolo strats with the ultra fast speed, showcased every single possible ways the run can screw up...
    You sprinkled a few more run killers right before the end for good measure, and by the time you showcased mrprmiller's final run, I had to... I... HAD... TO... physically get up from my seat.... and stare in disbelief and amazement at how frickin fast the run had become, and the whole time I was also telling myself "plz don't fail... plz don't fail... plz let it be the one... OMG THIS IS THE ONE!"
    And it was glorious. The whole video felt like a roller coaster, slowly going up the highest slope as you slowly laid everything down, and when you were ready to show the final run, the payoff was better than if I watched it happen live because at that moment I knew everything that was at stake.
    I can't.... I can't wait for the next video already... and I also need a break from all this emotion :D

    • @OneShortEye
      @OneShortEye  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Sorry it took so long to respond to this one. Your words are too kind, and I'm glad you felt exactly the way I wanted viewers to experience this story.
      I can't promise they'll all be this emotional. One of the biggest challenges I have with these stories is that runners very rarely keep records of their big failures. I was lucky this time in that I knew I wanted to make a video and downloaded Miller's Twitch VODs as he was doing his grind in the spring. Otherwise, had I waited, those run killers would've been lost.
      Thank you again for your comment.

    • @blueskirt5842
      @blueskirt5842 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@OneShortEye Not all of your videos will be this emotional, but if Summoning Salt's videos are an indication, often you will explore a specific game, at first only intending to explore the technical details and the wacky history of the numerous breakthroughs that runners have found to shave time, but a narrative will arise from the history, information, and accounts you will gather, which will shape your video.
      Sometimes the narrative that will emerge is an epic friendly rivalry. Other times it will be about the friendships and close knittedness of the community (like in your previous video). Or a community's collective effort to achieve an important milestone. Or runners pushing themselves to get as close as possible to what is feasibly doable for a human being. Or tales of dedication when this quest for perfection has them playing for years or decades.
      And when that happens, you are golden because you can make anyone watch and enjoy your video, whether they played the game or not, or whether they are gamers or not. I never played Wii Golf, but I know I had a ball watching the speedrunning community cracks this game open, breakthrough after breakthrough, in Summoning Salt's Wii Sports Resort video. And with Salt's Ninja Gaiden, the Quest to Beat Matt Turk, and the Quest For World Record Perfection videos, I had friends who aren't into too big into gaming or speedrunning, having a good time being amazed and mesmerized by the dedication of some runners.

    Haven't started watching, but already excited to comment. Hero's Quest is one of my three favorite games of all time. I'm a slow chill player, and not a huge speed run buff.... but I'm excited to see what happens!

    Literally the most impressive part of the video.

    When they run this game at this level it sounds like those hollywood hackerman scenes.
    If only someone said "I'm in" when successfully sneaking past the chest on the last screen it would be perfect.

    I've been watching these videos in release order so I couldn't help but notice this and was slightly disappointed it wasn't called out in the video. Although, I have no idea which event happened first in real world time. I'd love to see a huge timeline drawn up that shows the timing of events across all these related games speedrunning history.

    Seeing some of these EGA scenes is transporting me right back to playing it. The cave where you steal the key, Erana’s Peace, it’s like some pressed play in my head for the audio from those scenes 🤗

    Was replaying through Quest for Glory series this week and thought, what the hell, let's see what the records are like for speedruns. I was thinking oh maybe 15 or 20 minutes, etc.... Was floored to see this one minute time, but avoiding the dispel potion and the optional nature of some of the goals make perfect sense in terms of the game.
    Neat.

    Heroe's Quest is SO FUN. I still have my original box with all the pieces, and i play it whenever i can convince anyone to play with me. it's literally playing a DnD module only self contained to a few hours, and you can keep your characters around for the next dungeons if you want. amazing game
