😂 I bought one of these "worthless crap" Radio's (UV-5R) for $3 and I have easily programmed it for GMRS channels & Repeaters, FRS, MURS & local HAM Repeaters to which I (listen only) to people from 8 miles away, Radio to Radio or 30+ miles away thru GMRS Repeaters or hundreds of miles away thru HAM Repeaters !

I am a victim of hurricane Helene I had no power no phone service. I got on the national frequency for emergencies. Told them the situation and location of me and my family and my neighbors were stranded from the hurricane. They sent someone over right away brought us food and water. They continue to contact us until yesterday. We had no power for 13 days. And continue to communicate with us and bring us food, water and supplies .They told me it doesn't matter what frequency that you use. You can use it for an emergency. With out a license And also said. "Some people" will try to say that the FCC will fine or put you in jail😂 . Just tell to them shut up. I used my baofeng K5 plus and uv5r. They were fast to respond. A true HAM (Radio Amateur enthusiast) would be right. You should need anything other than him and his equipment as it had been for decades in the past. There is nothing the inreach could do that he could not, and he could do much, much more. (live video via satellite to Medical professionals until help arrives, etc.) without the specialized single purpose only commercial equipement monetizing Amateur Radio Technologies. You may have had few idiots who happened to pass the amateur radio entry test, but you didn't have a true HAM, in your group. The satellite the inreach uses is a repeater, a true HAM would know how to use it as well in an emergancy, not just the ones some use to socialize locally with friends. He'd know the only limiting factor in him reaching any repeater is Earth (ground in EE terms), there is no Earth between him and a repeater aboard a satellite or know to bring along a wire antenna to through up higher in a tree to increase his distance from the ground. I've come to realize I don't need that inreach, nor will the group I'm with, the factor will only be in the logistics of getting boots to those in need, never in contacting them. Which is why I find it said that folks like our host here is so disinterested in the hobby, he has skill and knowlege that could help, that off-road group he has could volunteer it's service in transporting the medical professionals we could arrange to the areas their needed in his community. But we don't have the option of "Volun-telling" free people to do so as we did in the military. :) I started in the hobby just a short few years ago, as we all did, as an "idiot" (or ignorant) HAM, found myself under the wing of an "Elmer" (true, and knowlegable, HAM teacher who was also an emergancy responder) and my knowlege and skill had since grown expotentially and still I feel to be falling short of its potential. Ever question why in even the most remote places the best adventuring teams will include a HAM operator? Even the International space station has a HAM radio and operator, wonder why?
Well, over a year ago I started watching Randy’s videos after wanting a radio for camping. Didn’t know a thing about GMRS or ham. Now, thanks to Randy, I am really into radio. Spent my weekend driving an hour in all directions testing the new GMRS repeater our club just set up. went from a 35 mile range to over 65 miles. We were using a consumer one and just switched it out for a commercial one with 100% duty cycle. All this because I wanted a better camping radio. (And yes I got my ham too, but rarely use it) GMRS is where it is at.
I do a lot of hiking in my home County. We have three Sheriff repeater towers that I can access, which are always monitored. I also have Wuoxan...Ocean...hand talkie with the GPS feature, giving me my precise location. Being a 70-year-old fart I try to take precautionary measures when adventuring.
In Colorado we have a large network of ham radio repeaters that gives good coverage in the back country. While it doesn't cover everywhere it does cover a lot of the state and is monitored almost 24/7
Dude, you would be an awesome teacher / instructor in any school or college. You do an incredible job teaching on this subject, I love you videos, keep up the awesome job🤘🤘
The tacticool guys also think baofeng radios will get you kilt. But they fail to realize in a SHTF/TEOTWAWKI situation even their expensive encrypted radios will catch unwanted attention. Read the Guerrilla's Guide to the Baofeng Radio and you'll be okay (if those scenarios ever happen)
I explain it to tactitards like so: A radio is just a flashlight you can't see with your eyes. Best to have it on as little as possible and never within a mile of where you want to be.
Those types love the AR-152 because it looks tactical / military but takes up double the space of a smaller radio and does everything that a UV-5R would.
Whew. That was almost scary. I thought I was going to need some actual form of protection from my now Killer radio. Thanks for letting us all know you are doing well.
Absolutely great video! Man, this is a topic that you needed to cover. I about fell off my chair when you dialed 911 in the radio are there people that actually think that? Unfortunately, I think that there are.
Love your vids Randy, you're a hoot! Honestly a lot of your vids cover topics I already know but it's still very entertaining watching your infosplaining vids. My adventuring is fishing and kayaking on a lake a couple miles from my house. I carry a UV-17R with me and keep a 50 watt cross-band repeater powered up in my truck that re-transmits on the local repeater that's almost always being monitored (benefit of being close to Dallas/ Ft Worth/ Denton). It's more for ragchew as I also keep my cellphone in a drypack....
Thank you for mentioning personal locator beacons in this video. Seems like at least once or twice a week someone is going into the various radio groups on Facebook asking about what radio would be good to use in an emergency when in remote areas. Most of them are looking for a handheld they can take with them when hiking and think they will be able to get help. None of them ever respond to comments stating a satellite phone or a personal locator would be better. Most people outside of the radio hobby have no clue about how radios work. They just know push the button and they can talk to their friends and don't understand why they can only get half a mile when the radio packaging claims a range of 36 miles. Many of them also want a ham radio walkie-talkie because they know ham radios are capable of world wide communication.
I love the wall sign today! The background is starting to resemble a Radio Shack showroom! 😅 But that broken, splintered pencil is just killing my soul!
100000% agree on the Garmin. You can get the cheap insurance with the service to cover all the expenses of an emergency response. Even short of an all out emergency you can text people if you are out of all range and just need help.
A sad ham would rather see you die of exposure if you run off the road in a blizzard on a rarely travelled road rather than answering your call for help. Those sanctimonious self-appointed guardians of the airwaves are so smug, they would justify their indifference by saying "You shouldn't have been in possession of the radio in the first place". I am new to GMRS. I try to follow the protocols of proper behavior, but I am still learning. I find that there are some operators that will ignore you if they don't know you. I'm not looking to tell my life story, but a simple answer to a request for a radio check won't ruin your day. And maybe you might need me, one day, to contact emergency services for you while you're sitting upside down in your Subaru Outback.
Colorado has the Colorado Emergency Radio Network with linked repeaters all over the state. Someone is always on watch to relay your information to the proper authorities/rescue personnel. Its only to be used if you cant call 911 by other means like cel phones which have really spotty coverage and in most places high up in the mountains themselves there can be no coverage at all. Obviously climbing to the highest areas like peaks or saddles is prob necessary but you've still got a better chance reaching the C.E.R.N repeaters than using a cel. Satellite may or may not beat a radio depending on how stormy it is so ideally carry all three if you wanna be safe.
Sounds a lot like Florida's SARnet, though they stated specifically that SARnet repeaters are only for county EOC use during events like hurricanes. Probably can use it if there's no other choice.
Another great video! I think you said you might make a video about navigating the FCC website about getting a 'private' frequency assignment... My Jeep group would like to have our own frequency, outside of the GMRS frequencies. Thanks for doing radio users a need service!
We do Cades Cove sometimes when we visit TN. I specifically program some repeaters that around that area (GMRS & ham). But....due to the mountainous terrain and heavy foliage in the summer, I can only usually hit them from the parking lot. Once we go in, I can hear them, but they can't hear me. My only hope, if something bad were to happen, is that someone on the trail also has a radio, but who knows what channel they are on. Don't just say "I'll be fine, I got my radio!". Like Randy says.....you'll probably end up un-alived. Oh, and Randy, you actually had me going for a minute when you pretended to be butt hurt. :)

I have a uv5r it works decent on repeaters in other states i visit but, it doesnt do shit for repeaters or simplex in my area of rural Alabama. I can program it manually off the keypad easily without chirp. Id rather use a VHF/UHF mobile transceiver with a better end half wave antenna or an vertical.
Happy Ham here AND Search and Rescue person! Really just about the only thing a Ham radio is good for most of the time is when someone tells SAR roughly where you are, that you HAVE a radio on you, what freq and TX/RX schedule (Wilderness protocol, maybe, who knows though) you will be using and then SAR may be able to talk to you when they get within a mile so (obviously more if you are on a mountainside/open ground in line of sight, but still) and sure there is always gonna be that one guy who claims he called a guy on the other side of the planet when he broke his leg and that guy called the USA and blah blah blah. I have NEVER personally been involved with any rescue EVER with someone calling up on simplex or on a repeater even! Most of the time if YOU can't get out, neither can your signal If you are going to try it then it best to have an unlocked radio and have all the Police/fire/ems/lifeflight/airports/marine/DOT/NFS/USFS/etc programmed in as a lot rural services are still analog.

I’d like to emphasize that if you are going to make a ham or GMRS radio a *part* of your plan do not think they will just magically work. Don’t think “I’ll figure it out if/when I need it.” As with any of your emergency gear (first aid, shelter, communications, personal protection, etc), the first time you use it should *not* be when you need it! If you don’t practice with it, train with it, you really don’t know how to use it. Your gear won’t fail you, you will fail to use your gear effectively. So get out there and use your gear, learn to use your radios. You don’t have to go full radio dork. But you should learn their capabilities and limitations.
When I did desert exploration out west solo, I carried a radio and Sat comm. Now that the AF saw fit to move me to the southeast, I just need a cell phone, I keep the radio on just to monitor. But I still have my sat comm (in storage) in hopes I will be out west again someday and away from people.
Pull yourself together man!!!!.... just remember... the sun will come up tomorrow... Bet your bottom dollar That tomorrow. ...There'll be sun! Just thinking about Tomorrow Clears away the cobwebs, And the sorrow 'Til there's none!
Much better than one of these radios, but if you don’t wanna pay a monthly fee, you might consider a personal locator beacon. The one I use is made by ACR. But either one of those devices is gonna be head and shoulders above a two-way radio. I’m not saying these things don’t have their uses. I think if you want to communicate with others that are nearby they’re great options but they’re just not great options for a true emergency.
Since I sing this video today. It's making me sad and i'm crying Too I am real sad now because somebody unsubscribe from your channel. Is it okay that I cry with you?😢😢😢😢😅

I take it from your appearance and demeanor…. You got your HAM license. Now you’re heading right into Sad Hamness 😮
If he gets his license I'll unfollow him. Well, no I won't, but I'll make sad rebel noises for a short period of time.
😂
Join the power of the dark side…
Kool shirt dude!
There are optional evacuation insurance policies you can get through Garmin or others. Note a recent TH-camr used one in the wilderness a year or so ago and it cost around 30-40 grand for the helicopter rescue.

I have the Zoleo. I like it because it has its own phone number for texting. I can give it out to "some people" that I like. lol
With or without sweat?
@@jamesmetz5201 I second the Zoleo, for that specific reason, but the Garmin product is also first rate.
Well said
You’ve got some strange apps on your phone 😂
I love your shirt! 😄
Good vid Randy. At around 2:16, surprising to me, you had me playing the infamous mini-violin for .0008 mili-seconds. Haha!
I have a uv5r it works decent on repeaters in other states i visit but, it doesnt do shit for repeaters or simplex in my area of rural Alabama. I can program it manually off the keypad easily without chirp. Id rather use a VHF/UHF mobile transceiver with a better end half wave antenna or an vertical.
...damn, I thought that was my phone, almost all the same navigation apps. Great minds do think alike.
well that thumbnail was prophetic, wasn't it?
I WANT THAT SHIRT ‼️
Thank God most sad hams will never leave their mother's basement to go off roading.
Most of the time if YOU can't get out, neither can your signal
If you are going to try it then it best to have an unlocked radio and have all the Police/fire/ems/lifeflight/airports/marine/DOT/NFS/USFS/etc programmed in as a lot rural services are still analog.
Sir, I am worried about your cervix......A special cervix announcement....As I have been told by several people on several occasions....A radio is a radio...A phone is a phone. Know which one to use.
I LOVE your shirt!!!!
ohhhh were can I get a public cervix ... you can announce it or not .. I just want a public cervix .. that sounds so awesome !!!
Pubic cervix was always my motive for getting into radio.
Lol, he DID say "cervix" (so it wasn't only me.).. And those 5Y3 rectum fryer tubes ... Single Slop Bucket is out- Ancient Mary is where the rebels dwell...
Kamaltoe Kamunist Kamala has given hers out quite frequently.....
Very informative video thanks, I need something that will work in Berdoo Canyon area stay safe.

😢....I have a shirt from awhile back with that same saying, and i kid you not Randy they were saying the same stuff about me!!! And i'm not even famous like yourself!!! LOVE IT!!! I wonder if its the shit causing this..hmmm ( I just saw some stuff on our repeator do-da and saw you make people sad there also WOW, you are good!!! Keep it up and thanks. Keep on jeepin,7 slots✌️
You need to take your act to Hollywood. It’s good. 👍🏻
Bet your bottom dollar
That tomorrow. ...There'll be sun!
Just thinking about Tomorrow

Can you make a video on the Garmin in reach mini 2 sometime?
That pencil got me bro
The dog keeps eating the pencil 😂
I find the Zoleo Emergency communicator GPS device is a way better value and the same Iridium satellite network.
I have had zoleo for about 2 years. Definitely worth it
Much better than one of these radios, but if you don’t wanna pay a monthly fee, you might consider a personal locator beacon. The one I use is made by ACR. But either one of those devices is gonna be head and shoulders above a two-way radio. I’m not saying these things don’t have their uses. I think if you want to communicate with others that are nearby they’re great options but they’re just not great options for a true emergency.
Only a person who is a member of the FCC police can make these bold statements. You, sir, are said member.
I've seen his official radio police ID card and everything.
One could use the scan function on the UV5R to at least be able to contact/interrupt a live person.
i love what you don't mind what some fools say
I love your t-shirt! Great acting 101 😢😅😊
Since I sing this video today. It's making me sad and i'm crying Too I am real sad now because somebody unsubscribe from your channel. Is it okay that I cry with you?😢😢😢😢😅
