    Thank you! It was the last day of live racing at the track by my house today. So I watched your video 1st. Then my 5 year old daughter and I went to the races for the 1st time. We only bet on the winning horse for 7 races. I let her pick the horses. We won about $247.50. Our seats got upgraded so we had a private box in the a/c with free food and drinks. Best of all she got to meet one of the jockeys that won and the female jockey gave her a pair of riding goggles. Amazing day!!

      Great to hear Petro! Yes spend a little to win a lot. This is the opposite of place and show wagering where you have to spend a whole lot to win just a little. No thanks! Might as well take on a little bit more risk and get more bang for you buck. Keep playing those win bets and exactas in the right situations!

    My grandfather taught me at 4 years old to find a good jockey at 6-1 in a race longer than a mile and bet him to place. As long as the favorite doesn't run in, you can get some decent odds with a good win percentage. Especially for elementary school kid!
    Using this strategy over the years led me adapt it to hit exactas and trifectas by boxing (another thing you hate, boxing) my place horse with strong favorites in exacta boxes, and keying or boxing trifectas using a good show horse.
    Speaking of show horses, if I like a horse in one of these big stakes races that has crazy money on a favorite and the odds on my decent horse go to 50 or 60-1 or something, I'll play him to show, and I'll throw him in a trifecta. There's still money to be made in the place and show pools in these big time races because the heavy hitters are dumping big money into hype instead of handicapping.

    • @Weekendhandicapper
      @Weekendhandicapper  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I am glad you have had success with place and show but I never have. It sounds like much like you do, I use those horses that I would normally use in the place and show position, I just include in them or single them in my exactas and tris instead. Potentially make more money that way even though it involves more risk. If you have some winning angles and situations to use those bets then keep it up for sure if it makes you money.

  • @dedeee29
    @dedeee29 3 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    Very useful. The only thing I notice is it's important to set some kind of pattern of the Amount a person feels comfortable losing or is satisfied in winning. To that end, from my experience, a parlay can be useful as a way to turn a little into a satisfying return. I worked windows at racetracks for many years and a lot of sharp bettors use a parlay. I'd love to see you go over parlay in one of your videos. Object, if a person can be right 2 or even 3 times in a row it always outpays the double or pk 3. The idea being playing with house money if you don't have a lot to invest. Great job. You are sincere and don't come off as Mr knowitall, just being helpful and encouraging to our beloved game.

    • @Weekendhandicapper

      Thank you for comment and kind compliment Larry. Hopefully I don't come off as a know it all because I am certainly not that. This game humbles you every week so I am always learning and experimenting just like everyone else.
      If you don't mind disclosing what track did you work at? If you don't want to tell then I understand. I have been to many number of track with several more on my must visit list.
      A few years back I did a video on Show Parlays. They can be fun. I am not sure if you see this one or not. Thank you again for the comment and your input!

    Been playing the ponies for about 3 years now and still consider myself new to it, lol. Started with win bets and exactas. Still love exactas especially with learning part wheel but now experimenting with pick 3's. But I still get suckered sometimes into paying supa's. I agree tho, usually when I stick with wins and exactas right now, that's when I do well.

      Nothing wrong with venturing into riskier territory once you had some success with these basic wagers. It is hard to beat a simple win bet or a nice exacta or double. So many opportunities with those bets Greg. Continued success!

    Analytically, the show bet is a better investment than the win bet. I have a database of over 150k races from over 30 different tracks dating back to 2014.
    If a bettor bet on every favorite to win, they would cash 37.4% tickets returning $258k for a loss of $49k or -15.9%
    Conversely, making a place bet on every favorite would cash 58.7% of the bets returning over $269k for a loss of over $37k or -12.3%

    Awesome advice Weekend Handicapper, I've been waiting for this video forever, thank you so much! Quick question, for the Daily Double do we stick with 5/2 odds or more for a horse or we can be more lenient and go down to maybe 3/2 or 2/1 since it's two races and there can still be some value? Thanks a lot in advance!

    • @Weekendhandicapper
      @Weekendhandicapper  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes that is correct. Sometimes a horse might be getting bet in the win pools but might be a good bet and not getting bet as much in the double pools. Most times it is the same but there are times when you might find an edge. Link up a horse you like and try to improve its prices anyway you can. Whether that be doubles or exactas etc. For example use that 5/2 that you like with horses that aren't the 2,3,4 choice etc., that is when you can get a good return.

    I grew up with my backyard full of horses. But I never even thought of betting on them. I used my horse for a trail buddy when I stayed out all night doing Astronomy with my friends. Which is beautiful. When I moved to Los Angeles I had a friend who was very good at betting on horses. He won a lot of money betting on Zenyatta. But I didn't bet but I loved it. So now I am thinking maybe I will give it a try. One of my horses candy he was a quarter horse and he won good money when my brother would race him. Anyway I will give a try.

    • @Weekendhandicapper

      So since you are experienced with horses and know a lot about them how do you feel about horse racing? Do you think it is animal abuse or do you think the horses enjoy racing? People seem to be always conflicted about that issue. Hopefully you are enjoying betting on horses so far and thanks for sharing those memories!

      @@Weekendhandicapper I loved my horses very much and treated them like people. My horse Sam was 18 hands and when I went outside he would get on the ground and look at me. He wanted me to get on his back and we would run in the wind to the apple tree. As for as horse racing I think if the horse owners take care of the horse and don't run them in the ground are just see them as a way to make money, then horse racing can be a great experience for the animal. it can become animal cruelty if the
      owners are shareholders only see the horse as a dollar sign. if the animal becomes lame they either put it down are sale it. One thing I notice with my horses is that they are very sensitive animals. But if they love their owner they will really give it all they have. When my horse candy had his son he took me to see him. I fell in love with him he was so much like his father. Well when I had my daughter some years after that. I took her to see candy, I told him candy look. He really looked at her then he looked at me and smiled at me. He really smiled at me. That surprised me I kissed him. I then realized he really understood me. Candy was also 18 hands most of my horses were big and beautiful. If you give them a little love they will give you so much more.

    IMO by far the best bets are pick three’s but only when you start it with a value horse singled up front. Say you like an 8-1 type or higher it is a great investment to drop $40-$60 with a combo in the following two races. You have to be patient and wait for your value horse to start the pick three with because there is no upside to starting a pick three with favorites because the payouts won’t be worth the investment.

    How many bets should you make per race? You recommend these three bets. Should we do just one per race? Or can we do all three for each race? Also if I do multiple should I pick a winner and use the same winner for my exacta or should I try to use the horse I think could beat my favorite horse? I have been looking for clarity on this for a while. You should make a video on how to place bets and how many bets per race. Also if I am going to place a daily double should I also place a win bet on those same horses for those races? Or just do the daily double alone? I have so many of these questions. Last one, would it be stupid to pick a winner and use that one horse to place first in the exacta and on the daily double? I hope what I am saying makes sense. But if you could clarify this for me I would appreciate it. Thanks for all your info. Take care.

So my betting philosophy is to use horses like that in those kinds of bets instead of place and show. Yes they are harder to hit and more risky than place and show but I am basically saying the same thing will happen except I will get paid more by using horses like Jesus's Team in exactas and tris ad supers. Speaking of Jesus. He was key for me having the winning exacta on this years Pegasus World Cup. He helped improve the price of Knicks Go. I think the exacta paid $25 or $28. Thank ya Jesus! I didn't know they still raced Greyhounds! LOL

      @@Weekendhandicapper yeah I know what you mean. I do the same. But you’ve seen some of my lucky when my 3rd place comes in 4th 😂.....oh yeah there’s a lot of dog tracks still running. I’ve made some decent money on $1 tri boxes. Just a money pit tho when you don’t win lol

    I feel like UK jumps racing there is a place for each way bets if you are specifically betting cause you think its a top 3 horse in the race on form. A 20/1 place is a 4/1 win at the end of the day.

    In this recent Preakness, the only way I won any money was to bet my horse to win, to place, and to show. True, I didn't walk away self-satisfied, having come out ahead $9, but my horse came in third (was it? I've already forgotten) and if I'd put all my eggs in the 'win' basket I wouldn't have won squat. :-)

    • @Weekendhandicapper
      @Weekendhandicapper  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey as long as you are enjoying the game and happy cashing tickets then I won't criticize. :-) Instead of using the horse I like in place or show bets I take on more risk and use them in exactas and trifectas. I will be doing a video about that in a couple of weeks. I am glad you had some luck in the Preakness!

    I don't bet on horse racing to make a 40 cent profit, I found for me playing a pick 4 is awesome, think about it like your playing 2 daily doubles for 50 cent can't beat it.

    • @Weekendhandicapper
      @Weekendhandicapper  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Nice! Yes it is hard to grind out a profit. Much better off winning less and hitting tickets and payouts that keep you in the game for weeks, months, and years at a time. It is unrealistic to win every day at this game.

      Yes if you stop in Hawthorne you should be able to bet on a variety of tracks. I am not if Illinois allows people to bet online or not. If so that is an easy way to do it. Hopefully I am answering what you were wanting to know about. If not let me know!

    What off track are the best to bet on ? I heard some pay better than others not sure if that is true or not..Thank you

    • @Weekendhandicapper
      @Weekendhandicapper  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      What off tracks like when it rains and the track turn sloppy or muddy? I can't say for sure but I would think the smaller tracks would be the ones where you could make some money with off tracks. My thinking is that the major tracks like Churchill, Belmont, Santa Anita, Gulfstream have a lot smart money in them and those computer teams play those a lot. Lots of money in the pools coming in late by whales and computer teams. So perhaps look to smaller tracks that often get rain and see what happens. Tracks such as Emerald Downs, Canterbury Park and Indiana Grand might be ones to look at. All this is pure speculation but it would be interesting to find out. You just gave me an idea and reason to experiment with this! I appreciate Shawn and let me know if you have any success playing off tracks at certain tracks. That might be an edge you have that others haven't discovered!

      @@Weekendhandicapper Thank you for getting back to me ..It does seem tracks like Belmont and Churchill etc have alot of chalk coming in so i was just curious if other tracks our a little more wide open.I will look into sum of those other tracks maybe for some better payoffs..Thanks keep up the great work.

    Usually the first place winner is the favorite and pays nothing. 3 to 1 odds suck second or third place are usually 10 to 1

  • @patrickdebonis6493
    @patrickdebonis6493 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

    I would advise new horse players to stick to win only. Place and Show betting has it's place but requires more of an advanced understanding of racing. For example: An odds on favorite should be bet to place rather than win. In the long run., it actually shows a profit, but it is an awful grind. Similarly, there are horses who run second an excessive amount of the time. Some say that they just like to run with other horses. However, I've discovered that their connections do this intentionally, just so they can run the bag out there every week and collect a check. If the horse won, they'd have to advance him through conditions. I would advise newbie to avoid the exacta in favor of the double. The track take on exactas are usually higher, and there are so many ways to waste money on exactas by boxing and wheeling, that they best hold off on that until they're a little more ready.

    My strategy is the show bet I make a full time living betting the show bet only....It's all about the numbers...It's like the saying would you take a million dollars cash today or 1 penny that doubles everyday for ONLY 30 DAYS so next day you would have 2 pennies....I would take the penny over the million cash which is smart most dumb idiots would take the million cash over the doubling penny...same with show bet you don't make much but over time its money in the bank....

    Betting on a win horse? Where does the show bet make sense? Both bets at the same time. Show backs up you loss if you screwed up mildly and it crossed 2nd or 3rd. Show may not cover 100% of both bets principal wager,but 50% and up is very possible. Very possible per say 2$ win and 3$ show same horse,with a distinct chance of winning on both. Where does this fail? Obviously,your horse came in 4th. I consistently horses/dogs always come back on a BAD day with 50-70% of the total I bet. Last time out 100$ ahead. On small bets.

  • @markmarinello119

    I disagree with you when it comes to longshots. I bet win, place and show at odds of 10-1 or more. If your horse places or shows you can not only get your money back but if it places tou can often double or triple your money back.
