    I love this line. Lol. This movie has terrific dialogue and acting.

      This line perfectly establishes Chaney as a self-centered loser, coming right after Mattie calls him out for the murder of her father. He can only pity himself, seemingly unaware that it was his own actions that led to this moment.

    I always thought it was hilarious that Chaney, this cold blooded murderer weve been hearing about the whole movie, greets the main protagonist in such a friendly oblivious way. Literally slings his rifle. Just kinda perplexed at the sight of a little kid up in the mountains in Indian territory. Like he just ran into his buddies kid at the grocery store on a random Sunday afternoon

      i think of it like him being a cold blooded murderer who doesn’t really see anything wrong w killing people, so when he saw mattie he was reacting the only way he could react, which reads as though he’s saying “you mean to tell me i killed her dad? small world”

    The movie makes it fairly clear that the character (Tom Chaney) portrayed by Josh Brolin is not mentally stable and is given to fits of rage. Josh Brolin turns in an incredible perfromance here of a person drifting in and out of sanity, almost wtihin a sentence at times!

    • @BogeyTheBear
      @BogeyTheBear ปีที่แล้ว +4

      The water would have affected the caps, not the gunpowder. The bullets are oversized and get literally shaved down to size when rammed into the chambers for an airtight seal. The cap closes over the back end of the chamber, so water isn't getting into the chamber. The caps are another story, but that can be saved by dripping melted candle wax on the caps to seal them against water intrusion.

      Agreed, I never really liked Kim Darby as Mattie and she kind of spoiled the original for me. I saw a documentary suggesting John Wayne was not happy with her or Glen Campbell's casting for their roles and he was disappointed with their performances. Hailee was absolutely superb in this movie, I went from not liking her character as portrayed by Darby to loving her character as portrayed by Steinfeld. Jeff Bridges did a brilliant job reprising the role of Cogburn, but he mumbles a bit too much and I prefer John Wayne in the role overall. Poor Glen, RIP, he was a lovely singer but isn't in the same universe as Matt Damon acting wise. One of the few occasions when the remake was better than the original. Robert Duvall was better in the original but not much in it. Josh Brolin was great as Chaney.

      When you load a percussion gun like a Dragoon, you are forcing an oversized bullet down the chamber. A .45 lead ball going into a .44 steel chamber--- the round is literally shaved down to size...
      ...which means the front of the chamber becomes airtight, to say nothing of waterproof.
      The light splash of water seen here would have had zero effect on the gun misfiring.

But in this one, I thought it was really sweet that while Cogburn had been calling Mattie "sister" for most of the movie, when she was in real trouble, he automatically calls out to her by her real name. Not to mention the second time, he sounded genuinely worried for her.

      That is really something, is it? Surprisingly enough, what Tom Chaney did here is not far-fetched from reality. Emmet Dalton in the Coffeyville raid of 1892 got shot 23 times that day, still fought back, mounted a horse, escaped, and lived years afterwards. There are also numerous cases of people now getting fatally shot several times yet still fighting back.
      You can die in one shot, a couple of shots, or take well over ten and still be alive. It depends on several factors like the type of gun used, the bullet/velocity, where you are shot, how tough you are/endurance, and your willpower to not give up and keep going.
      There are lots of times police officers will have suspects charge at them with knives, guns or just try to escape, the officers unload full mags on the suspects, but they still manage to fight back or run away and jump fences. The will to survive can be strong.

    • @AMainProductions
      @AMainProductions 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@cavman9883 the question isn't about surviving or fighting back, it's why the hell did he just walk straight towards the person (who as far as he knew) still had a loaded gun drawn on him? If he wanted to fight back he could have gone for the repeater on his back or just made for the bushes along the river.

      Uh...no, the Dragoons are cap and ball revolvers. The bore is .44 caliber, backed by 60 grains of black powder, no cartridge. Not the same as .44 magnum. .44 mag is a smokeless powder cartridge invented in the 1960s. Dont get me wrong its still a lot of oomph but not nearly as much as modern .44 Mag.

    • @chardtomp

      @@tomaspabon2484 I wasn't saying that the Colt Dragoon is literally a 44 magnum. I was saying it was the closest thing to a 44 magnum available at the time it was introduced in the 19th century. The earlier Colt Walker was more powerful but it also had an unfortunate tendency to blow up. You certainly wouldn't be running around, fighting with people after you got shot in the torso with it. The chief difference is the Walker had a spring catch for the ram rod and the Dragoons had a positive latch at the end of the handle.
