St Ives branch line to Lelant!

  • Have you ever taken the St Ives branch line train between St Erth and St Ives? It is one of the prettiest train routes in the uk, as it hugs the coast, passes beaches and tiny rural stations.
We join the train at St Ives, alighting at Lelant, a request stop. This is where you have to let the conductor know that you would like the train to stop! From Lelant station, we join the road, to Lelant Church, unusual in its position so close to the Hayle estuary and with far reaching views. After passing through West Cornwall golf course we cross the vast expanse of Porthkidney Beach, joining the coastal path back to St Ives.
This video was filmed before the latest "Stay at Home" guidance issued by the UK Government.

Thank you particularly for this memory. Pam & my last stay in Cornwall to attend a family celebration. We made a week of it, traveling via Shearings, staying at the Shearings hotel next to the station.
We used public transport throughout. It was all very reliable.
    Again, thank you.

I visited St Ives in Cornwall a few years ago and saw the train coming into St Ives. I was there two nights and barely scratched the surface. Your video of St Ives is wonderful! It showed all facets of St Ives and made me want to go back! Kudos for your humor, video quality and your descriptions!

Aww! that brought a big smile to my face on another day of self quarantine. Your smiles are infections and the walk quite delightful, not to mention the scenery. Just the tonic I needed today. Keep safe PS I know someone that just loved the trains.

Oh lovely St. Ives. I have been there 4 times, taken this branch line 3 times, and walked the South West Coast Path from Hayle to St. Ives 2 times. I never get tired of these views and the place. My favourite things in St. Ives - hard to pick just one. Strolling along the harbour/beaches, eating a pasty sitting on a bench, having the best Sirloin Steak ever at the Beach Restaurant, visiting Barbara Hepworth sculptures, visiting Tate St. Ives, having lunch at Porthmeor Beach café. Strolling the narrow streets, having a tour in the St. Ives museum, enjoying a beer at the Sloop Inn - or at any of the other nice pubs. I have to stop now ;-) Thank you for a lovely video, from my lonely home office, staying at home in Norway

That was lovely. I love that train, but I've never thought of doing it that way! St Erth is about halfway from our house to St Ives, but because parking is tricky in town, we usually go really early, park at St Erth and get the train with a takeaway coffee from the station. We sit on the harbour, watching the town wake up, then have breakfast, a wander, and then when the tourists build up by midday, we head back again and go to Birdies in Hayle for lunch!
Btw, St Erth is a good locals tip, but don't believe a word of the signs that call it a park and ride. It's a station car park. You pay for the parking then you pay for the train.

Hi Lori, Great to think we made you laugh and feel a bit of joy! We had a great day! Cornwall is a public transport nightmare, and most locals have a car due to necessity so travelling on a train is such a novelty, and the guard was lovely; she agreed to be filmed for the request stop request! I reckon we could have walked around to Carbis Bay but, when we are filming, we seem to take so long and progress is slow, so we decided it was not a 'goer' (the tide had just turned!) There is a shipwreck on the Carbis Bay side that peeps through the sand at low spring tide and it was just being covered as we walked past, Sarah :)

We take the train ride to St Ives every time we come to Cornwall. Now that there is a decent car park at St Erth it makes it so much easier to do the whole length of the line. The scenery is the main draw. We really must do the Liskeard to Looe line, then take a boat ride to Polperro and bus back to Liskeard. There is no way I am going to pay the owner of the Polperro car park. I don't begrudge paying for the boat, train and bus as they deserve it.
