My old man was a firefighter in London in the good old days of huge fires and limited equipment; he always told me you don't put fires out with water, you mainly just swear at them. Maybe it's the same with sails? An amazing, authentic insight into the reality of sailing. Thank you guys!
I have more respect for Sophie's composure and ability to do what was needed to get past these conditions. Remarkable stuff. You have come a long way since sharing space with those large tanker boats.
You guys are good together. When one is stressed the other always seems to have some control and is able to keep the situation smooth. lol. Love that you shared these real experiences with us.
Sophie you’re a gem to have around to calm a situation and put rational thinking in place. I hope that Ryan realises how lucky he is to have you around especially when he looses control with his anxiety. Sometimes it does help to have a little blow out now and then 😂👍
Since my initial comment, a lot of negative comments have appeared. I realise many experienced sailors and even more armchair sailors viewed this episode. Anybody who has sailing experience knows that shit happens and of course anxiety levels come with it. Ryan, given the situation, you did an awesome job and don’t let the negative comments of those confined to a couch have any oxygen. To the captain and his gorgeous first mate, you are living the life most people don’t have the opportunity, resources or courage to pursue.
Johnny AppleStead I have sailed too and continue to sail and I therefore view your reply accordingly. Clearly Sophie is calm and level headed but at the end of the day, who comes up with the solutions to the problems - I would prefer the problem solver every time - all very well drowning calm and level headed. Having nearly drowned three times, I am qualified to make that call. With regard to Ryan, everyone grows and develops with time and experience!
Johnny AppleStead We obviously have differing opinions and that is fine. Why the hell did you have the need to criticise Ryan in the first place, saying you would not want him on your team. Hardly positive feedback for someone on their first crossing. Your criticism says a great deal about you. I guess the audience out there will pass their own judgement.
@@davidharlem6824 hey, I wouldn't want to sail with rye guy either, he is rude and aggressive, shit happens and u got to handle it , very weak character to scream and yell at Sophie,
I love the realness of this video. In our case I’m the high anxiety one. You guys make a great team. And even though I get how Ryan finds the camera in the way during stressy moments, I’m grateful you shared the reality. xo
Love you guys. Raw emotions. "Tell TH-cam to wait" Funny. I'm learning sailing the fun way with you two and seeing the world from a totally different perspective. Be well.
I like how calm you were and Ryan was flipping out, I used to get stressed just sailing 25 miles to Catalina island, now no problem! You’ll both become seasoned blue water sailors after this.
Great to see the mostly hidden side of sailing offshore. It’s can be pretty scetchy in that acceleration zone with all the confused seas. Hats off to Ryan it was very refreshing to hear the REAL emotions and frustrations due to sail configurations and changing winds. Every new sailor can relate to this, if they say otherwise, they are full of shit! 😬
I love the courage to show when things don't go smoothly. I've been there, we all have, the furler jams, the waves suddenly shift, whatever. Great job!
This Ryan dude, is really cool... Sometimes things doesn't go the way it's supposed to and it's cool to see someone get mad about it, and doesn't polish it away for TH-cam... Keep going and stay safe ‼️⚓🇩🇰
Listening to Ryan fighting with the sales and I felt sorry that he was having such a frustrating time. I was right there with you Sophie, suggesting that he chill out a little. But then, you got the bimini (is that right) up and had a chance to sit down and have a drink. Things are better now.
Like previous comments! I totally appreciate how real and raw this was. When researching something like the Atlantic crossing I want the real raw experience of it so that I can have a better idea of the good and the bad before doing it myself! I’m a new subscriber and I can’t wait to learn more from you!
Glad you enjoyed it. Everyones experience will be different. I have some anxiety with sailing like that and it showed that day. If we would have had a crew of 4 my stress levels would have been much different. but yes, its not a 30 minute movie of the full crossing, there are emotions both high and low and it is a very extreme thing but it is doable by most and it is a fun challenge. Ryan
Confinée à la maison comme - presque - tout le monde, je vais me régaler en regardant chaque jour une vidéo de votre traversée de l'Atlantique 😊 Merci de partager avec nous cette fabuleuse expérience !
This has been really fascinating for me, a non-sailor. My wife who is more experience (but not to the level of crossing the Atlantic) really loves it. Looking forward to more episodes.
Thanks, you are a strong couple together! I think that what we saw was just what happens in real life in a sailboat, and you managed it well! The job Ryan did wasn’t easy in those conditions and in foredeck! He is the real skipper! And Sophie, you are strong, amazing Crew! I wish you a safe voyage!
Thanks for letting us see things as they unfolded with the unvarnished realities of a stressful situation with the sails malfunctioning. I can only imagine your anxiety level especially after you did a video of all the things that could go wrong and a podcast on risk management. Usually those things that could go wrong are in the back of your mind and you probably put them into the forefront and triggered extra anxiety, plus being on camera in the middle of everything adds to the stress. Mindfulness meditation can help calm the mind prior to an event when the stakes are high...the Marine Corp uses it. :)
Worrying too much might just be a normal way to begin such a big adventure, especially for perfectionists. You two are great fun. Thanks for sharing the hard times along with the easy times. That’s real life, not just a fairy tale. Knowing you have made your voyage across the Atlantic I wish the very best as you continue with your adventures. Cheers
Hello Guys. Being a capt. Means working as a team. We all have our weak moments. Rian I picture myself when I started more than 25. Years ago, I was pretty much the same as you...Stressed at myself knowing the responsibility. I think you are a very capable person. Posting the misshaps and f words 😀...all normal to me.... But respect your courage to post it! Both of you being a great team and sure Rian also knows his way to calm Sophie down when she has her Moments. At the end of the day it is how you make it happen. Balancing your love for each other is the best you can do 🥰🥰. I also think talking (what you Do) is the best learning curve to become better in what ever you do. We are humans making mistakes every day... Stay safe and please do what you love to do.Don't be dis encouraged about negative comments, because they don't help. Lovely greetings from Phuket.
Sophie you are a real trooper. Way to help calm Ryan down. Ryan you did good mate considering how stressed out you were. Hopefully that will get better with more experience on these more significantly stressful passages mate!
A bit of the rough start, I know the frustration when thing don't go smoothly, I'm sure Ryan feels bad at his scolding. Life is too short to hold anger. Great video.
I love it, you guys crack me up. I can appreciate the reality of the situation. Of course easy for me watching to be critical, but trust me calm, cool and collected takes practice. Stop take a breath. Very few thing on any boat require getting upset over. Most recently lost my engine going into St. George cut Bermuda. Blowing like stink, barred away from danger, heaved to...(best maneuver when things go to hell) . Had a cup of tea, made plan, no worries. Bad part it took me 25 years to learn this.
I can’t wait till i get to sail around the world and have these challenges. The challenges i have now are not nearly as good. Signed, jealous subscriber
Well done guys. That was an exciting start. Not to worry, it'll all be fine! Lots of sailors have been in swearing mode until they got it sorted. You're off on a great adventure. Vive le diference, vivez vous! Sail on!
Well done to both of you and thanks for sharing. I can understand Ryan's anxiety. Hopefully it gets a little easier each time. Looking forward to tomorrow's video!
I just discovered your videos and I love them. This is as real as it gets. Most sailing videos don’t show this side, they are either showing bikinis and clear blue waters or they make click bait titles around one little incident to make it sound like they almost got robbed by pirates or something. There’s also a lot of armchair critics here, probably from people who wouldn’t cross a pond in a canoe themselves but they’ll criticize Ryan for swearing or being anxious. It’s great that Sophie is there keeping calm, they make a great team. I’m sure though if someone needs to climb the mast to fix the rigging or dive under the boat to fix the prop or rudder it’s going to be Ryan so it’s perfectly understandable why he was having anxiety prior to leaving and dropped a few fuck bombs. Who gives a shit, he was right there fixing the sails when they went haywire. I’m also positive that if something happened out there which caused Sophie to get hurt or worse that he would feel responsible and I’m sure those things are on his mind too. I’ve seen people who look cool as a cucumber and completely unphased and carefree and it wasn’t because they were capable or brave, it was because they were ignorant and foolish and had the “it’ll never happen to me” attitude. That gets more people killed than a bit of anxiety. I also guarantee the last day before departure wasn’t stressful because he was sitting around worrying for no reason, he was likely playing out every scenario in his head that could happen and thinking if he has the ability to over come it and going over all the preparations thinking about if anything was overlooked or forgotten. I’ll take that kind of person on my team than the guy who’s not worried about shit and goes out drinking the night before.
That sounds like me, when something doesn’t goes right the first time. 😂😂😂 I don’t use the F-bomb, but everyone in my close proximity learns German real bad. 😉 Looking forward to your trip. My greatest adventure was shopping on Saturday.
Tough to watch, but incredibly instructive. And off you go. I am so looking forward to watching the daily vlogs on this trip (even though I already know the outcome. :) )
I liked the premiere, but I wanted to watch again because I missed the first half of the video and also, I am actually watching and not just reading all the comments on the premiere. Sophie, you seem very calm and grounded. I think I am similar to Ryan about being anxious. Franny is the calm one and can calm me. As I said before, you make a good compliment to each other. Heidi
I can understand your anxiety Ryan however you are well prepared and you are aware of weather conditions for the whole trip, your boat is ready, now you need to just be the captain and enjoy your journey, good luck, bon voyage.
You guys are awesome! That strait was insane! You are courageous to post the raw emotion! Both Gary and I sounded like Ryan as we left- so.much.anxiety! I have to laugh at the comments about “starting in such conditions”! I am glad that I was pre-warned that the trades are 25-40 knots out Verde, always, and that Strait accelerates the wind! That swell out of the harbor was pretty exciting, too! You make me wish I had filmed our crossing, just for memory sake. But, thinking I will share your videos with friends and family because you pretty much nail what it’s like! (Except you put much more effort into the meals! -Gary and Laura
Guuuuys!!!! It was so much fun to cross with you :) Yes, that departure was quite something... we had taken the ferry to São Antao, the island in front of São Vicente and knew that we were up for a rough start, but oh boy... when you add emotions on top of it all, it makes for some exciting times! Unfortunately, it looks like we won't make it to the US this year (hopefully next year?) Hugs from Saint Martin!
Great video, realistic. BTW, you never have to cut the line if you cant reel in a fish. You tighten the drag and the line will break at the knot so you get your line back.
Hi Sophie and Ryan, I just noticed you sleeping on the settee with your head towards the bow and next to the bulkhead. If you hit something you will hurt your neck. I’ve seen this in an ocean race. Sleep feet forward always when underway.
Good communication I too get quite vocal in higher stress situations sometimes please and thank you’s are best for being used when asking for forgiveness when dealing with a real situation 👍👍
The best thing about a long passage is that you can afford a slow start and there is no set time of the day for departure. That been said, you should have done all your sail prep inside the harbour with the main reefed and your clumsy one furl headsail system set up and working even if you just tested it and furled back in again. Having a two furler headsail system is also a safety feature so consider that for the future,. Apart from all that enjoy your trip Captain Sophie and First mate Ryan.
We would have LOVED another furler, but simply couldn’t afford the extra 3000-5000$ it would have cost to install (that or a downwind sail) And you cannot prep the setup with the poles when the wind isn’t in your butt, that’s just the way it is. We never hoisted the main at any point in our crossing. And hell, things go to shit sometimes, that’s just the way sailing works! (This wasn’t even that bad to be honest, just a lot of nerves coming into play ;))
Just found this channel. Every boat needs a Sophie. Such a calming presence whereas the guy loses his mind so quickly. Hate to see him in the (plane) cockpit during an emergency! Yikes.
Oh sure, leave us in suspense about whether or not you caught that fish! Lol. Great episode guys and thanks for sharing the realities of sailing. They make for the best and most realistic episodes. Cheers from Canada!
Oh I'm so sorry to hear about the situation in Italy... Feels like our daily vlog comes out at a time people may need a few more videos to watch, so glad we can contribute making "social distancing" a little less boring (hopefully!)
Prayers to all the world in a time we all need to work together on this virus. I hope that the world leaders of medicine come to a common solution to help mankind in a peaceful way. And yes Ryan & Sophie, your videos do bring a smile to our faces, please keep them coming and stay safe!
Watching in 2020. California is on fire-the sky is yellow, the ash drops like rain. So I’m binging y’all. And so...THAT’S where the saying, “Swearing like a sailor” comes from. Spectacular stream of invective there, Ryan. That’s how I get when I have anticipatory anxiety: Quieter, and quieter, AND QUIETER, concentrating very hard on NOT SHOUTING... What usually happens with me, tho’, is I then manage to stub my toe, or fall on my face, or-and this is a true story-stapling through my thumbnail semi-intentionally then screeching, “Why’d I do that why’d I do that, WHY’D I DO THAT, why’d I do that...” Don’t know what I’d do if someone was filming me, tho.
have a safe trip i learned from you a lot because i plan to my trip with my family but now i'm searching the right boat in budget, thanks for your help merci beaucoup
Yep, Ryan carries a lot more "mission critical" responsibilities than I do. He has had to face his anxiety and has grown as a captain and a person since our departure from Cape Verde :)
I’ve deleted my comments and I apologize, I would also state how brave both of you guys are for showing us this part of your lives. I started to watch your TH-cam Premiere after watching this video and read your prologue and realized my concerns about you guys were unfounded
Hi Roger, thank you for this comment. It takes a strong soul to evaluate situations and feeling after the fact, especially on the internet. The comment ment a lot. Ryan
At least you guys film the good and the bad things that happen. Others just film the good times. Is Ryan always pissed? When he was eating he seemed to calm down.
Belle coordination ! Sophie a bien accompagné Ryan. Bravo à tous les deux.
I don't consider myself a sailor but, not sure I would start my passage wing on wing. It looks to be a fairly sophisticated sail configuration. Especially in what appears to be confused seas. Wouldn't a simpler genoa and mainsail configuration work as well?
We actually started out with the genoa and main and then the winds shifted around behind. it actually worked out okay for us in the end... the confused seas was due to us going between two islands... but after a few hours we got out and all worked well. Ryan
Well, I see why Ryan had so much anxiety. When you are prepared for an emergency and know what to do, it is only a situation. Sophie is so calm, she could have taken a nap during all the F-bombs.
Good vid, glad you didn't sanitize it. Interesting twin headsail setup ... both installed on the one foil? With benefit of hindsight would you consider this setup successful?
In your videos, I have seen several instances where I would have hove to for a short time to make a task easier such as landing a fish, or going to the head when it was really rough. Do you ever hove to?
Just watching this begs the question of why you guys chose to depart on this particular day vs waiting for a better weather window. Does not look like an enjoyable experience setting out for an ocean crossing.
Fantastically honest and raw representation of what it is really like to sail a boat short-handed, and made to look fun by Sophie's sense of humour!
You guys are good together. When one is stressed the other always seems to have some control and is able to keep the situation smooth. lol. Love that you shared these real experiences with us.

We would have LOVED another furler, but simply couldn’t afford the extra 3000-5000$ it would have cost to install (that or a downwind sail)
And you cannot prep the setup with the poles when the wind isn’t in your butt, that’s just the way it is.
Yikes.
Talk about stress getting started. All and all, under control and moving on !! ✨⛵️⚓️☀️🌊👣👙🏖🏝🍷✨
I feel so excited for you both, what a great adventure.
I'm stamping my feet!!!
I wanted to see the fish!!!! Youuuuuuu teasers! Apart from that Good vid.😀
Hahaha!!! It’s coming tomorrow!!!
Oh sure, leave us in suspense about whether or not you caught that fish! Lol. Great episode guys and thanks for sharing the realities of sailing. They make for the best and most realistic episodes. Cheers from Canada!
the suspense will only last less than 24 hours! The next episode is coming tomorrow already :)
@@RyanSophieSailing Excellent - I look forward to it!
Loved the vid guys! So honest - I am so glad we don't have cameras rolling every time we set off on a passage! 😬😂 You make a great team! 💪
Thanks for taking us along as voyeurs on your voyage!
Great video! I enjoying watching you guys take on the challenges of sailing. Helps me with my little challenges!
Great guys! In Italy is not a good moment due to Coronavirus... thanks for sharing, we can dream with you! fair winds from S/Y Alter Ego
@@Gunnie1961 I agree! all together against the virus!
Good thing you did the hair blow dry before sailing. Bon Voyage. :-)
Soooooooo happy for y'all!!
Love the way you guys work together. Bon Voyage
Awesome. I loved the ending.
have a safe trip i learned from you a lot because i plan to my trip with my family but now i'm searching the right boat in budget, thanks for your help merci beaucoup
Long passages will be more useful and safer for you to do it with extra hands , this is my advice to you, good episode well done 👍
It all depends on who you have with you! We’ve had both really good and really catastrophic experiences with crew... :)
Sophie, you are sooo cool under pressure 👍🏻
Hi Guys,
My opinion only, I think Ryans anxiety probably is an off shoot from his Fighter pilot career.
Good luck and take care.
I know you've already made it across the pond, but I hope to see more about how you did it.
Ryan is captain. So he carries the added responsibility as opposed to firstmate. Added responsible = reasonable anxiety.
Yep, Ryan carries a lot more "mission critical" responsibilities than I do. He has had to face his anxiety and has grown as a captain and a person since our departure from Cape Verde :)
Sophie, I hope you loaded up on Xanax, for Ryan. Y'all be safe
Ryan
A Sophie on your side equals success
At least you guys film the good and the bad things that happen. Others just film the good times. Is Ryan always pissed? When he was eating he seemed to calm down.
No, Ryan isn’t always pissed, but he had THE most anxiety I’d ever seen him have. He completely changes once we’re under way.
Have a safe passage
Belle coordination ! Sophie a bien accompagné Ryan. Bravo à tous les deux.
😁😆😅 safe trip guys
I don't consider myself a sailor but, not sure I would start my passage wing on wing. It looks to be a fairly sophisticated sail configuration. Especially in what appears to be confused seas. Wouldn't a simpler genoa and mainsail configuration work as well?
We actually started out with the genoa and main and then the winds shifted around behind. it actually worked out okay for us in the end... the confused seas was due to us going between two islands... but after a few hours we got out and all worked well. Ryan
Great one!
Thanks Andreas!
Sophie, I love you guys! 🤗 One question about crossing. Did you join to ARC or something like that?
Ryan: We've all dropped an F-bomb. Those who say they haven't are lying. Safe trip. 🇨🇦⛵️
Nope, never f'ing have!
😂
Im originally from NYC. Where I'm from the F-bomb is a comma.
well done girl
Well, I see why Ryan had so much anxiety. When you are prepared for an emergency and know what to do, it is only a situation. Sophie is so calm, she could have taken a nap during all the F-bombs.
Do they have 'ALT, CTRL, DELETE' buttons on Beneteaus? Looks like a nice day for a sail.
Good vid, glad you didn't sanitize it. Interesting twin headsail setup ... both installed on the one foil? With benefit of hindsight would you consider this setup successful?
Safe trip guys
Should I film for TH-cam or should I help my Captain...?!!!
Dude you get so cranky! I worry
In your videos, I have seen several instances where I would have hove to for a short time to make a task easier such as landing a fish, or going to the head when it was really rough. Do you ever hove to?
A cliffhanger! What was on the line? I don't deal well with suspense!
The answer comes in less than 24h, hope it's not too long ;)
I'm already on a ledge!
Just watching this begs the question of why you guys chose to depart on this particular day vs waiting for a better weather window. Does not look like an enjoyable experience setting out for an ocean crossing.
Michael Douglas oh the window was great! It’s that acceleration zone between the islands that isn’t...
