Today I discovered my lean back wasn’t near enough. I pulled my tossing arm back diagonal the other way and really showed my chest towards the sky. Suddenly every serve was going on at speeds I’ve never got before. It stopped me squatting, stopped my high racket elbow, and massively increased racket drop.
hi, great vid, thanks. I am wondering if you could make a comparison and analysis of Fededer's slice serve vs S.Williams's ? these two have the best slice serve on tour from male and female players, however their techniques are quite different, I mean the way of pronation. I'd like to know which one is better for amateurs to copy?
🔥Wow, thanks! This is very KIND of you Chauncey. There is a lot of great content on TH-cam and for you to say what you just did I am HUMBLED. Thanks for your support! JF
Djoker is freaking flexible. Sampras definitely got his hand below his elbow & I think Roddick was another who did as well, but most don't/ can't. There's definitely more snap if you can do it, but Fed's proof that you can have a great serve even without other-worldly drop. One point of differentiation between good servers is that some rotate more at the core like on a FH with the shoulders coming far around with core rotation and then rotating back as part of the uncoil with the contact point being a bit more to the right (or left) side. It's more like a corkscrew motion. Sampras, McEnroe & Andy Murray are good examples of this technique. th-cam.com/video/7thE0iXMBWs/w-d-xo.html Some other good servers bow more up & down with somewhat less core rotation & shoulder turn & release. Your video of Djoker's serve is a good example. It's more of a bow & arrow bend. Both techniques can & do work and truth be told there's a little bit of both in most good servers, but you definitely see a difference between servers in the amount of core & shoulder rotation vs. bowing up and back like Djoker's serve. The core rotators like Sampras make contact a bit more to the side as they unwind and their toss is more to the side (Fed as well) and I tend to think there's a bit more disguise as a result and I think the toss coordination is simpler and the toss doesn't have to be as high. But again - there are great servers with both techniques.
Good comment, I think it’s a mix too on good servers. Today I leant further back than usual, a real bow and arrow type thing. It transformed everything. Trying to do the first one was making me squat and my racket elbow move too high.
Hand below the elbow has more to do with your back arch. Joker arches his back too much while Fed actually leans back. How Joker does it is pure genetics and I wouldn't recommend anyone else to it. It will ruin your back.
Arching the back definitely will assist with this, I feel Joker is more "bendy", more flexible which also assist with this position. As always, thanks for your comment! JF
So I have to admit the hand sign (10) at the beginning of each video really grabs my attention. The info is great as always
Thank you for your indepth analysis of the serve sequence.
My pleasure, I'm glad you enjoyed it. More videos to come! JF

Great video but the height of the toss is never mentioned
You are correct. I've never had an issue with his toss height but it could be addressed for reference in future videos. Thanks for your comment! JF

Missing the key elements..you see but do not understand
Please share which key elements I am missing. Thanks, JF
