In May 1950 Ambedkar went to Ceylon with his wife to attend an inaugural conference of world fellowship of Buddhists. They were invited by young men Buddhist association, all of them are Sinhalese. This conference held in Dalada Maligawa ( holy temple of sacred tooth relic ) in Kandy where Maha nayaka theras of Malwatta and Asgiriya welcomed them and other delegates. Ambedkar was not a delegate but present with his wife as an observer, yet he was treated as a delegate by the conference organisers. These two divisions of Malwatta and asgiriya belongs to Siyam Nikaya ( Buddhist order ) which grants higher ordination only to those who belong to two high castes, Radala and Govigama. lower castes created their own nikayas in view of the caste discrimination. Nearly thirty caste divisions exist among Sinhala Buddhists. Being a jurist, a well respected social activist and reformer, I wonder how could Ambedkar have agreed to present himself with his wife at a temple premises that maintain caste discrimination, even now. There are five other divisions within these two major Malwatta and asgiriya sectors, all on caste status, though they belong to high caste. Government recognise only Siam Nikaya as the premier Buddhist sect and give all its support. Ambedkar gave a short speech at the conference but failed to condemn Siyam Nikaya’s caste discrimination. His acceptance of YMBA’s invitation and participation contradicts his principles and life long agitation. He might have felt inside that by mere becoming a Buddhist, caste discrimination cannot be abolished. He failed to acknowledge it for reasons known to him. I don’t know whether he knew at that time that no other heads of nikayas belonging to lower castes are invited to the Kandy conference. After a few years it has come to light that US govt has funded this conference through their agencies as a part of their fighting communism through Buddhism.
While your historical facts remain correct, one thing you missed out is that caste system in Sinhala Buddhism is in fact a legacy of Hinduism. Buddha was one of the first to rise up against caste system in Hinduism (he was born a Hindu - remember...?) There is no discrimination what so ever in the Buddhist scriptures (practice is a different thing) In fact caste system amongst Hindu Tamils in Sri Lanka is much more benign mainly due to Buddhist influence.....
Ambedkar has been proved right, in every way. Ambedkar was simply not a hypocrite. And he spoke out of knowledge....he read 10 times than everybody...he saw ahead..what we SEE today, the "hindutva" ism around, WE know what he was and IS . These two are.pygmies relative to Ambedkar.
He was highly Rational.. he wanted the work to be done on the ground level and not just in worlds of politicians... The frustrating part of his life was that no one was catching up to his levelnof thought process and ideas.. at that time.
Shashi Tharoor is a most prolific book writer with close to 25 books to his credit and perhaps many more to follow. Arguably the most articulate and definitely among the top Indian intellectuals dead or alive. Nevermind his party doesn't think so. Cong has reputation for aquiring talents and trashing them. As a professional author, speaker and a politician, Tharoor doesn't stand by his own arguments. Having spoken against colonial mindset and atrocities of the British Raj etc he was among the first and the strongest to oppose the banning of BBC Files. Eventually the govt of India raided BBC office and found incriminating evidences. Today BBC is shaken up and is in bad shape as a consequence of multiple misdeeds of similar nature worldwide. So much for the scholarship and intellectual proficiency of Tharoor which fail his own countrymen frequently when they need him the most to defend the voices and honour of the country. Further to my previous comment: On the following day of the Kandy conference, Ambedkar addressed in a meeting held at Colombo Town Hall” appealing to the untouchables to embrace Buddhism without having a separate organisation”. This is unbelievable when entire Buddhist chapters and worshiping places in Ceylon are observing caste discrimination, how could Ambedkar, a well educated person, make such an appeal. Hasn’t he studied the history of Buddhism and Buddhists in Ceylon , before he accepted the invitation? Can Sashi or someone explain please.
Indian constitution framed under the chairmanship of Dr. Ambedkar reflects western ideas/ethos/values since he studied and spent significant amount of time in the west which influenced him greatly looking at the western society and their governance. Influenced by the wester society set-up he wanted to build Indian society on the western way in order to get rid of the caste system for which his community suffered the most. As a result, the Indian constitution contains very little Indian civilizational ethos, values and traditions that made India great in terms of her social system developed, but later on it degenerated and caste system got enshrined in the society. His hate for "Sanatana Dharma" has also influenced him.
Now after Mr. Gandhi , Mr. Shashi Tharoor opens his fang what he think of dr. Ambedkar . Baba saheb chosen Buddhism not because someone gave him a book but because he studied all the religion then he decided to chose Buddhism and now current research also verified it that all India were Buddhists.baba saheb declare that Hinduism is the worst religion of the world , a religion that makes his own people untouchables, how can we call it a religion ?. Surely because it is not a religion but collection of caste . Baba saheb told the BBC exactly the correct sentence not the unnecessary thing that Gandhi opens his fang.
