I want to hear Giulio Neri‘s rendition of Wotan's farewell too, he sang this role many times in the 40s.

A recording of THAT act 3 with Neri and Callas would be beyond legendary.

I sang with Schermerhorn in Baltimore back in the 70s. He was a great ballet conductor but the way he races through this is frustrating. The recording with George London and Knappertsbush leading thenVienna Philharmonic is the best recording I ever heard. BTW I had the great pleasure of singing Siegmund in two Rings. A dream come true!

Let me add, he doesn't hammer any of his attacks. Real singing. Wow.

Magisterial. Beautiful singing for once in this much abused part. Remember he sang Gurnemanz in NY at the end of his Met career.

And for some reason those Gurmenanz's are yet to be made available to the public online. I will be looking very, very hard for it.

@@BestOperaMoments I recorded the Saturday broadcast circa 1974-5. If memory serves Vickers and Ludwig were in the cast. Haven’t listened to it in thirty years, so I’ll have to check the condition of the tape.
I find it interesting that René Pape, who might be called the German equivalent of Siepi, crashed and burned in the TH-cam clip of him singing this, the music of his native culture. Classic Italian legato, with the tone always on the breath and never pushed by it, makes any vocal music possible, whatever the origin. (I think Siepi’s German is quite good, much superior to Domingo’s.)

@@ransomcoates546 thank you for that image about breath... very helpful! This is true bel canto - floating the voice. However, (please don't crucify me) I miss the "bombast" which I think is really rather inherent in and crucial to a "right" interpretation of Wagner of this era.

Is the orchestra a bit out of tune?
