One rarely hears such a stylish Tosca in our days. The young Domingo in one of his strong roles is at his best. Tucci is on the lighter side of Tosca but her singing is totally secure, her expression and phrasing so natural, it's a joy to hear her in this role. Bardelli is the same, light but effective so they are a very balanced team.

Callas and Del Monaco went all out. Del Monaco probably lost when pulled an E.😂

perfect... act III final, unparalleled (unfortunately Cossutta always had to scream the "ciò m'accora... il fazzoletto", he was a great artist nonetheless)

What a strange and wonderful work! The French are very fortunate to have so many buried gems to unearth - I just wish they would put English subtitles on their filmed stage productions. Luckily I had a libretto for this. Thank you for posting this beautiful performance, with fine singing and magnificent orchestral playing!

Una bella esecuzione della Tosca,con un giovanissimo Placido Domingo, già astro nascente nel firmamento tenorile. Voce lirica per antonomasia,interpreta il ruolo di Cavaradossi,in modo eccezionale,con un bellissimo "e lucevan le stelle",mettendo in risalto le caratteristiche,che aveva la voce. Poi purtroppo con gli anni, affrontando un repertorio,non consone alla sua voce,ha perduto quel timbro bello e fresco,che possedeva in gioventù. Peccato!!!!!☹️

Ganz lieben Dank für das Posten dieser Aufnahme. Ich habe bereits seit Jahrzehnten hiernach gesucht. Zuerst suchte ich die CD von dieser Aufführung, leider konnte ich diese nie finden, war immer bereits ausverkauft. Im Netz habe ich auch bis gestern nichts gefunden. Ich habe eine persönliche Beziehung zu dieser Aufführung, denn ich durfte damals mit 17 Jahren diese im August 1970 live erleben und habe die Eindrücke hiervon bis heute nicht mehr vergessen. Das war und bleibt meine beste Traviata. Hernach habe ich diese Oper noch mehrfach live gesehen, unter Anderem auch in den Opernfestspiele in München mit Franzisco Araiza oder auch mit Sylvia Gestzy. Auch der Zefirelli Film mit Domingo und Stratas ist genial. Aber diese Aufnahme ist unerreichbar.

Ebe Stignani was a great Adalgisa with callas’ Norma.

Grob-Prandl is amazing, better soprano than Flagstad imo but Hofmann is the best singer here.

Here you can see what Wagner-Singing was in the past: Frida Leider is an outstanding Brünnhilde , beautiful singing not shouting with clear diction and Melchior was next to Lorenz anyway the best ever and all the others , what a Hagen !!!! NOTHING like this nowadays - N O T H I N G !!!!

Why would anyone consider Mme Gruemmer underrated. She was without a very celebrated artist and appear edin so many leading theaters. Yes, she should have recorded more- her Eva,Elisabeth and Elsa remain unsurpassed. She was not invited to the United States and this was a huge mistake. But at 56 she finally debuted at the Met, as Elsa. Mme Gruemmer was my very first Marschallin in a splendid production at the New York City Opera in 1967....marred only by even more cuts than the usual ones. The NYCO was a great company and its demise was a tragedy in many ways. Gruemmer had a splendid technique and when she retired at 61 she was in absolutely complete command of her vocal resources. She was very wise in her selection of repertoire and declined offers for Sieglinde, Chrysothemis and other heavy roles. This recording of Rosenkavalier from 1960 is a gem...Gruemmer is divine, and all the colleagues are excellent. I once asked the famous director Nikiolaus Lehnoff who was the greatest Marschallin of his experience. He immediately replied - Elisabeth Gruemmer. I asked why and he said...Sie war eine Dame....She was a Lady.

The best Norma was the fat Callas.

Imo both Landi and Pinza performed better 3 years later.

I love the 2:43 recording because it really distills what a valkyrie is. This is a joyful cry to her, but to mortals it shakes us with terror. Flagstad leans way into the joy, while Nilsson often sounds like only terror. This performance combines them.
