It’s not just right now. Italian teams have been in the dark ages for years when it comes to European football and it’s depressing to watch. I’d love more than anything to be wrong, but Juve won’t win the CL for another 10 years. The rest of the Italian teams don’t have the means to compete w the other big teams.
And mentally Juve just implodes in the CL. They’re the only team that somewhat has the means, but until a total physic shift takes place they’re not lifting a CL trophy. I’m a diehard Juve fan, but it’s just the unfortunate reality.

Had he been a right footed player, he would have taken that touch inside to avoid challenge and then it would've been a 100% clear goal scoring opportunity. Sure red. But since, he is left footed, he took that touch outside. It wasn't a red.

In fairness, the angle does matter. Even if the last defender is further up the pitch than the attacker, he can't impact the shot if he's not between the ball and the goal. In this situation, the defender was in a position to close the angle so that Mendy's shot would have had to beat the keeper and the last defender.

It's one-on-one with the keeper, so red is correct under the current laws. For the good of the game, I would rather DOGSO be given as a penalty even if outside the area than a red. Real deserved a clear chance at goal because that's what Mendy was going to have, and the red card just ruins the balance of the game.

@@sheriffbigdog9671 no worries, the red is the consequence the players have to accept for doing a harsh foul or preventing a goal scoring opportunity outside the box or other things. When a team gets a legit red then they have to pay the price. They can no longer complain about losing because they were a man down because they put themselves in that situation to begin with. I do agree that the balance of the game changes after a red is given but that is a necessary price a team must pay in order for people not to get chopped, or other illegal things occurring during the game. Anyways, the second leg will be eleven vs eleven and Atalanta are still very much in it.

"Mendy was going to take a strike", come on Craig your kidding yourself, take another look at the video 🧐. Mendy was running on a slight angle away from goal (centre to left) and touched the ball with the outer part of his left foot in an attempt to control the ball it was not an attempt to strike the ball. It was not a clear cut chance, yes it was a foul but a yellow card would have been the correct decision. The referee and VAR got it terribly wrong and consequently ruined what could have been an exciting match. I also wonder if it were the other way around would the referee have given the Real Madrid player a straight red card? Well if he didnt have the spine to give Casemiro his marching orders for simulation (diving) late in the second half while already on a yellow card, then i seriously doubt it. These poor officiating decision should not exist in modern football.
