Great review. Really appreciate the extensive data, with more detail than any others I've seen. Bad strike info especially useful for us average handicappers. I will have to try the 225s and see if I can find a way to afford a set. It's time. I'm 80, have been playing forged blades for years, Mizuno MP-33s and MP-67s, and now Chicago Classics, irons very similar to MP-33s that were designed by Robert Evans, formerly director of product management and of tour operations for MacGregor Golf, who had his own company from 1987-95 and had forgings produced in Taiwan. My 7-iron in all these irons has a 36 degree loft. It used to be my 150 yard club 15 years ago, but these days I get 135 yards, maybe 140 on a perfect strike with my own ball on a warm day. I carry each longer iron another 10 yards. The 225 7-iron at 30 degrees is halfway between my 6-iron and 5-iron, so it could get me back to that 150 yard carry. I still play the 6100-6350 yard tees, so an extra 15 yards on the mid-irons would be a big help on par 4s and 3s.
Great review 👍🏻 I’ve not seen other people highlighting bad strikes and the results they give. Really useful. 6yds front to back on a 5 iron 👌🏻 In terms of a comparison , please don’t compare them to a 921 forged because I’d worry about my bank balance!!!
Jay --- thanks for this video and your insights. My local Pro Shop has the new heads. I held off on the HMB from last year hoping Miz would dial in the MP series feel, performance and looks. Time to pull the trigger on these. Glad I held off until the 22 release! Hit them in the pro shop and they feel and sound awesome!
Great to have you back - best YT club reviewer other than TXG imho. Swing looking as good as ever and that 5i was giving the love back with impressively consistent sweet spot strikes. Sadly I don’t think I’m good enough to justify the cost of these, although the forgiveness on your low toe strikes looks as good as most ‘GI’ irons. What would you see as the main competition? P790?
Possibly but the well documented tendencies of inconsistent spin numbers with the P790 giving flyers etc would stand out against the more consistent 225. However in the realms of day to day life with the advertising and marketing machine that are the likes of Taylormade, they will no doubt out sell the 225. I wish the Mizuno would spend more money on advertising their products and not just rely on them being the best and that people just know they are....... People are influenced greatly by marketing and in my opinion they lose out not playing the same game. Thanks for the comment and for watching 👍
Thank you so much - my misses are heely and basically no youtuber is given me this kind of information. Appreciated it last time on the HMB review and lovin it again here. Keep it up Jay✌🏼 Greets from Germany
I do enjoy your videos very much and particularly appreciate the forgiveness analysis. One thing: we have come to expect the assumption that a less forgiving club is a more "workable' club and that the better player will sacrifice some forgiveness for workability. However, I never really see "workability" demonstrated. Perhaps devise a test comparison where a player with a reliably repeatable swing (you) hit comparable clubs and hit several shots where you deliberately draw the ball to the target, and several deliberately fading the ball. That is seems to me would be a measure of "workability" and would help one decide how much workability one was really sacrificing for any given level of forgiveness. Lastly, I've been intently watching your comparison videos of the various Mizuno irons, and have been trying to narrow my range of consideration before testing them. I currently play AP3s and they are ok, but for me anyway they seem to lack much feel. You've tested Pro 223s vs JPX21 forged, but it seems to me that the Pro 225s would be better compared to the JPX21 Forged and the Pro 223 compared to the JPX21 Tour. Do I ask for too much? In any event, very happy to have found your vid's.
I'm a 12-ish handicap and went for a fitting yesterday hitting all of the various brand mid handicap irons yesterday. My fitter didn't want me to hit the 225's because they would "punish" my mis hits. Ended up hitting the 225's and they were PURE!!! I have fast club head and ball speed and hit a high ball flight, but still need some forgiveness. These 225's were fantastic! ordered mine today. great video!
Hi Ryan, interesting that some custom fitters have this opinion of the Miz Pro iron range. Agree with the 221, it's a blade yes but still has some help, but the 225s are bordering on the JPX amount of help in an iron so even some mid to higher handicap golfers could use it. Glad you had an overall good experience and that you found the irons you wanted. Thanks for the comment and for watching 👍
I was fitted for the 225's and am eagerly awaiting their arrival. I can concur that in my fitting I was getting very similar distances and direction regardless of the miss hits. I also found it very easy to tell where I had missed the strike which let me adjust slightly. I tried the 223's, JPX921 forged and hot metal and I hit the 225's the best which really surprised me. I was pretty convinced I would be leaving with the 921 forged before I started.
How would you rate the forgiveness on the 225’s I ordered a set but live where I’m unable to try them or get fitted just went off reviews and the looks of this iron is gorgeous and timeless pretty much sold me lol . If you could rate the forgiveness for me that would be great. Cheers
@@wnfakind9197 I would say the forgiveness is pretty good and no worse than my old JPX900 forged. The smaller head (heel to toe) might intimidate a little but I think it helps me concentrate even more on hitting it out the middle. I had a lesson last week and hit a decent number of good shots. The Pro pulled up a shot he thought I had hit really well (he was concentrating on club path mostly) but when it came up on the screen, I had hit the ball very much in the heel and it was close to a shank but the flight was good and it was straight down the middle - that is proof to me that these clubs still help you out a good bit when you don't get it right. My friend has a set of Cobra Forged Tec irons and they appear to be a bit more forgiving but I think the Mizunos look and feel fantastic and I wouldn't swap.
@@johnwallace520 I have the JPX 921 HMP right now but just the pure looks of the 225’s I couldn’t hold back lol had to order a set . Thanks for your information
@@stumarston6812 I got the USB Mamiya Recoil 95 graphite in regular flex. My old set were KBS Tour 90 in stiff and I really don't notice a great deal of difference. A bit higher flight but every bit as far and further and no feeling that the shaft is too soft. IO had a lesson last week and was swinging my 8 iron between 82 and 84mph club head speed if that's of help.
Great review, Jay! I like how you go in-depth on the mishits to see what happened to ball flight, carry, etc. It's very helpful. I can't wait to try the 225s. I would probably just go with a full set of those. It's kind of everything I would look for: great looks, quite a bit of help, not too much offset, stronger lofts! Check, check, check, check.
Great video Jay, thank you for putting in the time and effort to get these videos done 🙏🙏🙏 Maybe pull the data from the MP20 HMB for a comparison (even though there is a loft difference). Possibly from a forgiveness standpoint as well.
Great review Jay ! I would do 225’s from 4 to 7 and 223’s from 8 to Gap W. Mizunos website automatically figures out the blended sets when you select the scoring clubs and tells you to weaken/strengthen any lofts. I was custom fit last spring for 2019 Titleist T-200’s w. Mitsubishi AMT red regular flex shafts. Love the feel of these T-200’s when hit on center but they’re VERY clunky on off center hits But they are super forgiving. Not 100% sure I want to drop $ again after spending nearly $1250 for my 2019 T-200’s Would love to see the 225’s versus the 2019 T-200’s !! The 225’s would definitely be my next choice of irons !

I hit the 923 forged well with the project X rifle reg 115 shaft. Do you think I could hit the 225 HMB? The order was placed yesterday. Should I halt and cage. Anyway a comparison review of the JPX 923 forged/tour and 923 forged /MP 225 would be most appreciated. Thank you.
Thanks for the kind comment. I have done that comparison (JPX923 Forged vs Pro 225) about 3 weeks or so ago. Pop on my channel look through the videos and you'll find it 👍

I would also make the 6i 1 deg stronger. I am older and have a slower swing speed then you. But a decent handicap of 7. Any thoughts? Thx, Ric

Great review , I was thinking of getting the 921 tours just before these were released .. I was trying them with that same px io shaft and loved it .. couldn’t decide on 5.5 or 6.0 how did you find it in 5.5 flex with your speed ? Thanks !
Hello, I'm a 10 handicap looking for new irons. I narrowed down to either TM P790 or Mizuno 223 or 225. And information or suggestions you have would be appreciated. I normally play + half inch, 2-up with stiff steel shafts. Thank You
Great review, but one question. Mizuno in there promo advises the 225’s are for handicappers of 12 and below. If you had a couple of pupils playing in that 8-12 bracket, would you recommend the 225’s as forgiving enough for them or nudge them in the direction of some other club to minimise the damage on miss hits.
Hi Richard, perfect timing to ask a question 👍 Basically I've never understood other than for marketing purposes the insistence with manufacturers allocating certain irons based on handicap, its a terrible measure for golfers to shop for the right equipment. Basically your striking and miss strike tendencies will dictate the iron choice, or should do. So if you know what your strike tendencies are then reply with your delivery details and I'll happily give you an idea to what to put on the list of testing 👍
Mr. Nut; By far the best review on these irons so far and I have watched too many on these soon to be in my bag irons. Do you think Mizuno would change the loft per club or get it done by the fitter?
I hit these kinda reluctantly and really really like them. I didn't want to. I have great irons in Cobra King Tours and don't "need" new irons... just want
I have the ‘old’ HMB’s. I was going to blend them but ended up with the full set 4-PW with Modus 120S shafts. Love them and even preferred the shorter irons over the MB for me. How do the 225”s compare? Thanks
If anything now with the reduced head lengths in the lower irons especially, even more people could use the entire set and not only really see them as a good players long iron option as was too common in the old HMB. The GW is tiny and a thing of beauty 😊 Thanks for the comment and for watching 👍
I'm switching from a Japanese forge blade , they feel amazing but not forgiving. tried the P790 they performed really well but hated the sound of them and feel as I was use to fully forged. how do the 225 compare to P790 ? do they sound and feel better ? it seems by the video that they perform the same
Asking in case you see this. I recently got fitted into the shaft you sampled today, the Project X IO 105g steel shaft. My fingers bother me so I need graphite. It seems Mizuno only offers graphite regular shafts at 95g (too light for me) and a 105g (but only in stiff). Any 105g regular graphite options consistent with the profile/specs of the Project X IO shaft that you are aware of? As a lighter steel shaft, how does the vibration in the Project X IO shaft compare to graphite? Thx
@@AskGolfNut love your reviews. I’m playing hot metal pro now. Great clubs. Went from 30 to 20 handicap in 18 months of playing golf. The new clubs are gorgeous. Incentive for me to get better
Great review, Jay. Need your help. I am a 15 HC senior golfer - around 75mph 7 iron swing speed. Demoed the (7 iron) Mizuno Pro 225 and 223's with only 10 shots each at the driving range with carry distance around 155 yards (unfortunately no simulator data). I felt the 223 was easier to hit and produced more solid shot compared to the 225. In theory the 225 are supposed to be forgiving irons and produce longer distance shots? Is there any explanation why am I hitting the 223's much better (in feel) with the same distance as the 225? Many thanks in advance!
Hi bimbom, when the club head speed is reduced, opting sometimes for cranked lofted irons in the search for distance can actually have the reverse effect. The stronger irons can't propel the ball on the initial launch angle long enough before gravity does its thing. It can mean that going to slightly weaker lofts and a higher initial launch angle, can increase peak height and carry numbers. The 223s are more of a solid construction where the 225s are a hollow bodied design hence the potential feel preference. Before making a decision I would go somewhere that's a proper head measuring data fitting facility so any variances can easily be equated. Thanks for the comment and for watching 👍
Jay would you say the 225 are as forgiving as jpx921 hot metal Pro? I have the pros and love them but I also love the forgiveness they provide me with. Tried 225 and found if slightly off centre def not forgiving for me?
Hi Craig, I would definitely agree. If you are putting up the 225 against the design of the HMP then it's not really a fair fight in forgiveness, as well as if you said which one feels better, it also wouldn't be a fair fight to the 225. The 225 and the 921 Forged is probably a closer compare 👍👍
What are your thoughts on changing lofts on the 225's? if you change 2° or 3° additional loft what effect would that have on turf interaction and internal tech?
Adding a few degrees loft would decrease offset, add a touch of bounce and twist the internal weighting lower (by a tiny amount). In the real world it would mean potential proper gapping between that and say a blended 221 set. Bounce wouldn't be increased to a point where interaction would be adversely effected. Ping irons for example have far more bounce like for like irons with no problems, and in some instances having a few more degrees bounce can protect against a very slight fat contact with the ground prior to ball. Thanks for the comment and for watching 👍
I game MP20 MB 6-PW and occasionally the HMB 5i. Took the HMB out of the bag due to getting nuckle balls especially off a small tee on Par 3’s. Like the idea of 225 with smaller head but would like to know if distance control and spin consistency are comparable to MB’s or 221 version. Nothing I have seem in the 221 that would have me move away from the MP20’s.
Hi Sean if anything depending on your strike abilities the 225 may even be more consistent than the 221s, especially if you have a slightly low miss on the face. Every indication so far says the new 225 is a very consistent spinning option, especially in the longer irons. Thanks for the comment and for watching 👍
Hi Dev, I wouldn't necessarily see these as an upgrade. More so a transition into the more players sector of iron sets. Both offer very good forgiveness levels for their design, so unless you are looking for an iron to look a certain way and perform maybe a touch more consistently then I would stay with the 921 Forged 👍 Thanks for the comment and for watching 👍
Not in gapping no as the changes in technology of the face change as the loft increases. The higher lofted irons are still semi hollow body but without the tungsten weighting to help off centre hits as by the time it gets into the higher lofts, it's the loft that is the biggest assist 👍
If they'd just fix the weird gapping and number them 1-P instead of 2-G this has potential for something special. Numbering aside the gaps are so weird that I think getting them even would make them sit badly. They're way off for 2 clubs per 25 yds.
@@AskGolfNut yes and they look great ...just frustrating when there are 3 good looking heads but you can only go hit 1 and get fitted for them if you like them I understand why companies dont want to make 5000 left hand sets and find they only sold 12 but i dont know why they dont make a left hand head for their fitting centres and then say ok if you order they will take 2-3 months to be made assembled shipped .
I believe its the physical cost of the moulds mate. I heard a few years ago that the cost of all the manufacturing and logistics of the left hand market for Mizuno only just covers the cost of making them, and that's with the restricted range choice.... Not helpful I know 😕
I love my Mizunos, but you must say..."the 24° club, is so good"... not the 5 iron...this ist not a 5 iron, it's a 4🤷🏻♂️...make no sense, with 2 gap-wedges or big gaps between the irons... You know, what i mean. I need clubs for my yarded and these in not to big gaps. Greetings from my MP18+MP32😉
I'm unsure how much at the moment but I'm certain that they can be tweaked to add loft to them up dial them back and also gain even more height and descent angle. I can really see how people will now put the entire set in the bag now rather than thinking of the HMB as a long iron replacement..... 🤔 Thanks for the comment and for watching 👍

Mizuno in there promo advises the 225’s are for handicappers of 12 and below. If you had a couple of pupils playing in that 8-12 bracket, would you recommend the 225’s as forgiving enough for them or nudge them in the direction of some other club to minimise the damage on miss hits.
Hi Richard, perfect timing to ask a question 👍
Basically I've never understood other than for marketing purposes the insistence with manufacturers allocating certain irons based on handicap, its a terrible measure for golfers to shop for the right equipment.
Great review thanks mate. Waiting for my 225 s to arrive 😀
Definitely need a compare between mp20 hmb to this 225
I hit these kinda reluctantly and really really like them. I didn't want to. I have great irons in Cobra King Tours and don't "need" new irons... just want
How does the forged feeling compair to the JPX 921 forged irons?
Great content as usual and I'm a Mizuno man myself have been for 25 years
I have the ‘old’ HMB’s.
The GW is tiny and a thing of beauty 😊
Thanks for the comment and for watching 👍
I'm switching from a Japanese forge blade , they feel amazing but not forgiving. tried the P790 they performed really well but hated the sound of them and feel as I was use to fully forged. how do the 225 compare to P790 ? do they sound and feel better ? it seems by the video that they perform the same
I wish I could hit that straight over and over again. Need to pick up some classes with a pro and put in the hours on my swing.
Thx
How about comparing these to 921 forged????
Defo on the list, also the 223 against the Forged as it uses similar tech to its advantage.

@@AskGolfNut Thank you for the prompt response, Jay! I'm a big fan of your reviews!
How would you compare forgiveness of MP225 to Srixon ZX4?
I play the MP 20 MMC .. after watching it seems the size of the 223 is very small. Is the 225 a better fit for former MMC players?
Jay would you say the 225 are as forgiving as jpx921 hot metal Pro? I have the pros and love them but I also love the forgiveness they provide me with. Tried 225 and found if slightly off centre def not forgiving for me?
Hi Craig, I would definitely agree. If you are putting up the 225 against the design of the HMP then it's not really a fair fight in forgiveness, as well as if you said which one feels better, it also wouldn't be a fair fight to the 225. The 225 and the 921 Forged is probably a closer compare 👍👍
@@AskGolfNut thanks Jay, I think sticking with the HMP is the way to go for me, there is a no point making the game harder than it needs to be 😂😂
Mate - you should be on tour ! Your dispersion is unreal !
Good days and bad days bud, also I'm just hitting shots on TH-cam, playing golf to feed the household is a totally different game altogether 😊👍🏻
How would you compare the 225s with the TM-790s?
Great review....only cements my decision to get them
Thanks for the kind feedback 👍

How do they compare to the Taylormade P770??
Hi im currently gaming mizuno jpx 921 forged im a 16 handicap would you say it would be worth me upgrading to these ?
Hi Dev, I wouldn't necessarily see these as an upgrade. More so a transition into the more players sector of iron sets. Both offer very good forgiveness levels for their design, so unless you are looking for an iron to look a certain way and perform maybe a touch more consistently then I would stay with the 921 Forged 👍
Thanks for the comment and for watching 👍
Simply beautiful!!!
So is there a notabke difference in gapping between the 8 and 9 compared to say a 6 and 7 based on the changes in head?
Not in gapping no as the changes in technology of the face change as the loft increases. The higher lofted irons are still semi hollow body but without the tungsten weighting to help off centre hits as by the time it gets into the higher lofts, it's the loft that is the biggest assist 👍
Why not have 2 six irons instead of bending a five iron or get a six iron with a longer shaft ?
Try out the 2 iron!
Great review...Thanks....
Are Mizuno doing an option where you can order strong or traditional lofts like the MP20s?
Hi Ian, I would be staggered if they didn't, expecting the same movement basically as before within margins of the material and cosmetic finish 👍
Is there a huge difference between 221 and 225’s?
Technology wise massive, the 225s have a faster more forgiving face. Lower CG also increases launch like for like. 👍🏻
How do these compare to t200?
If they'd just fix the weird gapping and number them 1-P instead of 2-G this has potential for something special. Numbering aside the gaps are so weird that I think getting them even would make them sit badly. They're way off for 2 clubs per 25 yds.
Are you using a base ball grip?
2 thumbs 8 fingers 😊
Baseball grip ? Fair play !
Never changed from junior days, thought, if it's not broke...... 😊
Not trading my 921 HMPs any time soon but if I did these would be the first stop.
I have the 921 HMP as well great irons
These are Fabulous looking irons....all 3 heads....of course as a lefty......grrrrr
At least mate you have the 223’s to look at. Possibly may be the most commonly sold of the 3 so you may well be in good company 😊
@@AskGolfNut yes and they look great ...just frustrating when there are 3 good looking heads but you can only go hit 1 and get fitted for them if you like them
I understand why companies dont want to make 5000 left hand sets and find they only sold 12 but i dont know why they dont make a left hand head for their fitting centres and then say ok if you order they will take 2-3 months to be made assembled shipped .
