I have always done this when making potato salad with small new potatoes. I then put the peeled potato into an egg slicer and the results look good in a salad. Be aware though, not all types of potato shed their skins so readily... some skins tend to cling to the potato and you end up tearing off the skin bit by tedious bit!
I noticed that they were new potatoes, does this hack work with all types of spuds
does eveyone on youtube have perfectly healthy potatoes with no rotten bits or eyes?
Yeah
Potato i feel like I've met a celebrity
***** Lmao!
@syi666 hahahah i know right
syi666 There is a huge overproduction of potatoes we only it 1/3 of the ones we produce so we throw all the non-perfect ones out.
One thing to clarify here. The potatoes shouldn't be boiled for long time at first. It should be just long enough to soften the skin and underneath surface. I assume this should take about 3-5 min in boiling water. Note that the rest of the potato is still pretty raw and hard. Yet, this might not be perfect for fried chips.
You could do a similar technique to peel tomatoes by cutting a skin-deep cross 'X' at the bottom of the tomatoes, drop them n boiling water for 1-2 min then transfer them into cold water. Then you can easily and quickly peel the skin off.
If you master the technique, you should be able to peel a very thin skin without any tomato pulp lost.
Great to know! Most people were saying 12-15 minutes, which is what I parroted in a reply...
Thanks youuuu ❤️❤️❤️❤️🙏
WRONG, for flavor it is best to cook until done, then peel. Done under cold water you won't burn your hands and the potato stays hot inside or just use dish washing gloves.
@@AwesomestGreatestMostestFunny But I don’t want to cook it, I just want to peel it, and in that case that answer was RIGHT

I now use this method as I only have one hand to use due to having cerebral palsy it really works and there’s another benefit to this the potato is easier to slice if you want to make home fries etc and it cooks better and faster in oil
Great idea! Cook how long? Are the potatoes fully cooked or basically blanched once the process is completed?

What an amazing idea! Same as tomatoes. Cook the potatoes until done ( ready ). The cold water just makes the skin let go. They are still very hot. But if you put them back in the boiling water until you eat them, bthey will be hot.
I tried it today! Totally works!Thank you so much!
wow! this is great! definitely gonna use it. does it loose any nutrition or minerals when you do this?

DabluCrew "pretty cool huh?"
Instead of boiling, you can also microwave the potatoes for 3-4 mins (depends on the power of your microwave). That softens the skin enough to pull it off
Oh hell no
Did you try it yourself before posting your comment? I ask because I tried it and it didn't work. I kept trying longer times and it just wouldn't work. I ended up serving them with the skins.
yes I have been doing this for decades now@@shorty7363
Unless you're making mashed potatoes, you really don't need to peel them. But definitely wash them.
I just tried this with some large(not huge or anything) Yukons and it was a total waste. I didn’t over cook them. They were slightly underdone because I was going to try them in stew. But the skins did not come off cleanly and I lost a fair amount of potato that was stuck to the skin. (They were not in any way still raw). I doubt I’ll do this again. Maybe it will work for others though.
Omg!!! If you only knew how many potatoes I have peeled, how much I hated it, how time consuming it was... and then I see this now - SO EASY!! xD Amazing and annoying at the same time. THANK YOU :D
I like the way you explain things, it's easy to follow, especially when English isn't your first language. I also think you have a great voice. Thanks for sharing your tips and tricks 👍

any vegetable that grows underneath the ground needs to be started in cold water and things that grow above the ground can be started with hot water. I start everything in Coldwater.
Interesting. Why is that?
This is suboptimal for most potato dishes, EXCEPT for mashed potatoes, where you already have to boil them and drain the water first anyways, and in this case it's doubly good cause you get the whole potato instead of a potato that's been a bit shaved down. Really cool trick.
It works, although I need to help it with a dull knife on imperfections. Boiling with a skin is a good method for a potato salad. For normal meals they should not be chilled to be served with butter whole or in a mash, and look better soft and fluffy. But if there is a problem, such as injured hands and lack of gloves, this will do.
I almost do that, without scoring them. Works very well! Don't know why folks haven't done this before. It'll work with any potato.
Doesn't work with small potato's that have been cooked.
Ended up semi smushing them.
''When they're ready'' when are they ready damnit?
Kum quat lol
Yeah, when? The potatoes do not look that cooked, and I tried taking it off the stove, washed under cool water, and then peeling them... 3 times ... The peels refuse to budge.
Around 15 minutes i guess lol
oh my god.. if you guys don't know how long to boil a potato stay out of the kitchen!!!! but yeah, 15 to 20 minutes should do it, depending on the size of the potato. I don't see how this would save time, going through the bag to find the perfect egg shaped potatoes. What does he do with the other, not so perfect potatoes? You know.. the ones with "boobs" we used to laugh at as kids...or adults.. take your pick.
It's around 30 minutes for me. And it still works quite good in not so perfect ones.
But gods, yes, if one can't cook potatoes.....
made this tutorial so simple and straightforward ! thank you !
This worked really well on a purple sweet potato. Thanks for the tips!
I wish my mom knew this trick when I was younger -.- all the potatoes I peeled for her xD
Great! Thanks. But I cut it AFTER the boiling to hold in more nutrient.
That's only quick if you have a lot of potatoes to cook. What if I just want to make french fries?

Wow! Doing that could save hours if you're doing a large batch!
easy breezy peel the potato
I can't remember the last time I peeled a potato. What I normally do is buy potatoes from the supermarket wash them in cold water and cook them job done. If it's jacket potatoes they are already wash so I put them straight in the oven, job done.
Love this I'm using this method right now☺ thank you for the tip😃
Clever, just one snag, potatoes are usually chopped finer to reduce cooking time and to save energy.
I love how he says Potatoo
how long do you cook them before putting them in cooler water?

I think it consumes more time then simply peeling off with a peeler. :)
you're doing something wrong then that or something amazingly right with a peeler!

You know what's even easier than peeling a potato using this trick?
Just eat the damn skin..
This video was obviously not for you then lol
You can't use unpeeled potatoes for potato cutlets. Not every potato food can be done with peels...
@@jaein91 you can use unpeeled potatoes if you can cook without following directions specifically.. there's no reason you can't leave the skin on for cutlets, other than the recipe says to peel them.. call your potatoe cutlets with the skin homestyle fries. I was merely stating not peeling potatoes is always easier then peeling them, not to mention the skin is about the only thing that makes a potato good for you.
@@garethelwig2395 maybe im just too lazy to peel the potatoes, no matter how easy the trick makes it..
this video was a great trick for those interesting in all that extra work, just to eat a damn potato.
@@dexter131 I don't think you know what a potato cutlet is and how peels can seriously impact the taste and texture. I just don't get why you think one size fits all. There are different ways of preparing potatoes for different recipes worldwide and if this doesn't fit you then move on.
Yeah, I really hate peeling spuds! I did it for a living in 1988 and I thank you for the info!

"When they're ready..." When are they ready?!?
you don't know how to boil potatoes?
wannatradepants Nope!
I read where others have been saying 12-15 minutes, but I just read where 3-5 minutes is how long to shoot for. You want the skin and the surface just underneath to be soft, while the rest of the potato is generally hard and raw. However, if you're going to make mashed potatoes, I don't see why you wouldn't just cook them for 12-15 minutes anyway and get the cooking and the peeling parts knocked out in basically one step!
Very smart, thanks for sharing this. Working smarter not harder.
0:53 please do tell us how long to cook. Ty
around 15 minutes i guess
For me, I do it for about 20 min. or more depending on the radius and size of the potatoes. The bigger they are, the slower they take to become soft and boiled, so, I just chop them down into halves or quarters and put em alongside with the smaller potatoes to speed up the process.
What variety of potatoes did you use, and how long did you cook them for prior to removing the skin?
Thats what i want to know!!!!

"when they're ready?" .... really? how do you know when they're ready? Sheesh...
You don't know how to boil potatoes?
Ok 210* internal temp. Stick em with your thermometer.
Is that exact enough?
Maybe 6 minutes. Your experience might vary.
You poke It with a fork. If it goes through to the middle easily its ready
No professional chef would consider doing that, because regardless of nutrients washed out by the boiling water directly reaching the potato under the skin, it will likewise decrease the taste of the potato.
I tried it. I’d didnt work, peeled off in little pieces. Took much longer. :(
Its faster with a needle and its super hack on christmas...and in my country its classic way to do potatoes on christmas or when you just anytime make potato salad...
Cleaner peel... yes !! faster ? definately NOT faster :)
yes faster, like if u had to peel 2 kg of potatoes, u just have to boil them once and rip the skin easily, intead of peel them with potato peeler one by one
I'm surprised, it actually worked. not quite as well as the video (I cooked them too long) but it worked.
So, you dont think those potatoes can be peeled in less time than it takes to do that?

Thank you so much. I have arthritis and its difficult for me to cut potatoes.
Brilliant. Also when pealing before I lost some of the potatoes
my mom said that you showed her a good cooking trick, thanks a lot
I cut potatoes into pieces, and boil them. When they’re done, I put them through the ricer. The ricer squashes the potato and leaves the peel behind! I have always loved my potato ricer. I wouldn't be without one! I have one that's almost 200 years old! LOL. It's been through 3 generations! I tried your method and the peels kept breaking, not coming off in a large piece , AND the potatoes weren't cooked through. I was very disappointed. I was hoping to use this when making my potatoes for potato salad. More work than it appears to be. Maybe I need to buy a different type of potato.
My fiance wants me to help in kitchen. I sent her this, thank you.
Omg I have 15lb of potatoes to peel so I’m hoping this really work 😮
