F(x) and SHINee are brother/sister groups. They all trained together, they're very close. They debuted right after one another. They are the experimental sm groups. They both promoted RDD and Chu together. Lollipop! They have a Lucifer/Nu abo collab. Red Light and Everybody were similar. Even 4 Walls and View were meant for the other. F(SHINee) 💜💎
They were presented as sibblings groups. They had similar styles and their friendship was so beautiful. Sadly they faced some of the saddest moments. For me they were just as close as brothers and sisters. They have the cutest and finest combo performances. f(SHINee) 💎🌼

I remember just how much Key used to dance to f(x) songs back in the day. He was basically a member lol
f(x) were definitely ahead of their time during their career. they were also one of the only kpop groups who received critcal acclaim from western critics, such as billboard and pitchfork, for their albums such as pink tape, red light and 4 walls! if you can i'd highly recommend listening to more b-sides off their albums or even a guide because they're truly one of a kind :D
this group is so unique, amber entered SM because her vocals is good, but when she's debut she's became a rapper. luna entered SM because of her dance, but then she's became group main vocal. and victoria entered SM because of her dance too, but she take a training to became an actress, but when she's debut, she's became the group main dancer and leader 😆
Yes, Amber was the first female in a gg to be androgynous and have her own style (which was very strange back in 2008 but it did showcase the risks that f(x) would take for an experimental look and sound)!! Her well known "successor" is Moonbyul! Both icons in the k industry for favouring androgyny and more "male" styles in fashion and in vocal timbre..but just overall being themselves and denying the overly feminized gg concept/image

First in kpop atleast! Lee Soo Man actually modelled amber's concept based on Ella Chen from the Taiwanese gg S.H.E (pretty sure Amber talked about it in one of her interviews).
f(x) is the most unique girl group ever done in the whole kpop and yet the most mistreated by sm ent. ugh they were so ahead of their time, now a lot of songs by newer groups (especially red velvet) sound like songs f(x) would do, and their second album 'pink tape' (title track rum pum pum pum) is well known as the bible of kpop, it's so good so of course their discography is one of the best
It was a really big deal how boyish Amber was at the time lol. It wasn’t just a concept she did for a comeback and then changed later on. f(x) were formed to be an experimental/unconventional group like their brother group SHINee so her image fit perfectly!
They were the first K-Pop group to be praised heavily by indie critics/sites in the states for being so avant-garde and forward thinking so you’re not alone on picking up on that 😂.

As far as I know, Amber was definitely one of, if not, the first to debut in a girl group with that more androgynous look. SM's founder, Lee Sooman spotted her and had her scouted specifically because of her appearance. Amber explained that at the time, there was a really famous chinese singer who was everywhere who had an androgynous appearance and SM kind of wanted to bring that in to Kpop. It was a risk since at the time, the image of a female idol was basically a very feminine girl. The entirety of F(X) was pretty out there and experimental. Like you said, their music was very electronic influenced and not the standard pop sound and yes, ahead of their time. I'm just sad that SM pushed them aside after 2015 and we never heard from them again.
Even now, the whole androgynous look isn't very common in Kpop girl groups but it is more common in Cpop. There was a kpop group back in like 2013 called Global Icon who debuted with all members sporting the androgynous style, but that was apparently just a concept since they eventually came back with a sexier look and ultimately lost fans and disbanded.
This! I'm still very sad about G.I. they had a lot of potential and talent. Their debut was so unique but I think they were ahead of their time. Then again it doesn't feel authentic if their company are forcing that image on them and they didn't like it.
Amber is the most famous example of androgynous female idol in SK and she made this style really popular but I think there was some sort of a trend back in the 80s-90s. I can think of Lee Sun Hee (who apparently had a looot of female fans and I'd actually really enjoy a reaction to her from Sir Austin because she's an amazing vocalist and songwriter), Lee Sang Eun (with her famous Dam Da Di, which is the most 80s thing I've ever seen btw), Lee Yoon Jeong from 쎄쎄쎄 (who still rocks the androgynous well into her 40s) and Jeonghee from UP (who I actually thought was a young boy until I saw the sugarman episode).

fun fact: Seulgi was supposed to debut in F(X) that is why Amber, Johnny (NCT) and Kai was so happy when RV finally debuted since they trained together.

From what i can remember f(x) were the first group to introduce experimental music (and kpop community wasn’t ready then, they were bashed for having songs that weren’t up to the taste of the general listeners) and they broke the stereotype for having a boyish looking member for a girl group, and their styles are so different, that they were called Kpop Trendsetters.

SM Entertainment is really known for their concepts / ideas. They have nct and aespa concept. As well as exo with superpowers and red velvet with 2 sides.
They also have super junior and SNSD which are group who doesn't really have a group concept making them really versatile since all members can adapt to any concept

Girls generation and f(x) both made a commercial for a phone and both songs were called chocolate love. The comparison between the two groups in the same concept was really cool. It would be cool if you watched those since you like both groups.

Fun fact, they always were considered a sister group for SHINee. They're both the kinda experimental groups of SM.

@18:26 I agree with f(x) being ahead of their time. I remember this era being the peak popularity for SNSD and Super Junior in my country and I remember myself rooting for SHINee and f(x). SM's thing back then was having huge groups with bubbly, poppy, catchy songs with friendly choreography. I fell in love with f(x) and SHINee because their music was gamechanging, and they were rookies with a lot of raw talent.

f(x) is the first experimental girl group in k-pop they are not much appreciated back then because most of the k-pop fans were used to 1 genre band. f(x) is different, every comeback will give you different genre of music and that's what I love about them. Now more people appreciate them. I love all their music especially their b-sides it never gets old.
There's also Hot Summer, which was originally recorded by a German girl group. Of course f(x)'s version is better. plus the video has a pink tank in it.

Before Amber there wasn't really any androgynous female idols in kpop. There may have been a member here or there that would have a somewhat more androgynous aesthetic for a comeback, but then would revert back to a more traditionally feminine one later. When f(x) debuted there was a really popular androgynous female singer in China (I forgot her name) and SM was attempting to break into that market at that time. This is also probably one reason why they had Victoria in the group, as she is Chinese. Amber also speaks some Mandarin as well, as both her parents are immigrants to the US from Taiwan.
Fun fact: Amber stated in an interview with MTV that f(x) was loosely based off of the Spice Girls. She was their sporty spice.
The Chinese singer's name is Chris Lee (Li Yuchun). She is the main PD on Youth With You Season 3 that just started airing this week (the show where Lisa is also a mentor). She is still huge in China and a 15-year veteran of the industry. I actually discovered k-pop back in 2008 because of her lol. Totally have a soft spot for androgynous types, including Amber.

I've been watching your reactions over the past couple of days, I really appreciate how genuine and honest you are in them so far... your immediate reaction to red light was the same way I felt when I first saw/heard it, but because you are so genuine in learning about kpop groups and there members as well as the history of them, you've gone back and have been able to see it in a different light.

Talk about "Baby f(x)", Krystal was still 14 and Sulli only 15 when they debuted at the start of September 2009. You should check out SNSD's and f(x)'s versions of "Chocolate Love" for the LG Chocolate phone. Both are worth viewing. Luna just started her own agency for her solo work. They were one of the first "international" girl groups with Leader Victoria being from China, Amber being Taiwanese-American and even Krystal, technically, being Korean-American, for what it's worth. Victoria was truly the "mom" of the group, being a full 7 years older than Krystal and Sulli. Sadly, it's the cute "Giant Baby" Sulli in La Cha Ta that you liked. The girls have bad memories around the Chu era as some of them caught Swine Flu during promotions. Victoria, being practically a Chinese acrobat, was know for her incredible flexibility and did that "flip" in their live performances. Instrumentally and visually, f(X) was SM's experimental group. That torch got passed to Red Velvet to some degree. Yes, "Baby, LOVE f(x)". Luna's power after Amber's rap in NU ABO is awesome. NU ABO refers to a new blood type, Korean's being all into their blood types.
They were definitely a very experimental group. Even for that time's standards. Not only because of their fashion or the fact that Amber was a tomboy/androgynous, but also because of the music. Still, they were very popular. They still were regarded as SNSD's little sisters and SHINee's sister group, but I can definitely remember them being popular on their on because of their unique music. Luna is an amazing soloist, by the way! Amber also has a solo. And Sulli released one song that was super nice too (very experimental). Victoria I believe has a Chinese album/release, since she's Chinese. Also a quick rule of thumb to identify Luna/Sulli/Victoria, because you seem to have already identify Krystal and Amber: if they're belting their heart out, it's Luna; if they're are doing any type of gymnastics, Victoria; and the cute big-eyed girl is Sulli.
would love to see your reaction to their b-side too since that is where their ballads are. Their title track is mostly electronic pop or quite experimental (that is their image, not being afraid to do different time since they are ahead of their time)

Although f(x) don't have many live stages since they only really had their one concert together (Dimension 4, Docking Station) post-Sulli leaving the group, they're always amazing to watch live performances of and it's insane how crazy talented they are. There's also an older live performance of them performing electric shock in the heavy rain! Its really shows their perseverance and it's crazy to watch ( th-cam.com/video/7GH93-hb7Ig/w-d-xo.html ). Personally, it makes me so happy to see you reacting to f(x)! They're probably my favourite girl group of all time, and their b sides are a definite must-listen.
Pink Tape (Title track: Rum Pum Pum Pum) was probably their most experimental and critically acclaimed album and I personally loved the way all the songs came together and almost formed kind of a movie-like feel. There are so many amazing girl groups in Kpop, but for me f(x) is incomparable. They were my favorite group when I became a kpop fan, and even now when they're no longer active I love those girls so much. They were one of a kind, ahead of their time and yet they were very successful, even with the limitations their own company put them.

experiment group, they used to throw anything to them, they didn't have a unique style and every album was different, that's why i think the debut song was differente than other groups.

for you to know the girls, i would say luna is the shortest, victoria often have bangs, amber you already know, krystal basic start every song (with exceptions of course) and sulli is the cutest.

Before Amber, there weren't any androgynous idols similar to Amber. Lee sooman himself noticed and scouted her on a trip to LA because of her style and requested she auditions for SM global auditions which she did pass with her singing. I think he said he was interested in the style because there was a Chinese singer who got popular for her androgynous style so he wanted to try that for kpop. Even after Amber, I don't think there are any androgynous idols other than as someone mentioned before Moonbyul. But companies after Fx tried to copy Amber and made some of their idols follow it as a concept but just as a concept so it faded after awhile. and frankly didn't work. those same idols even stated they hated having their hair cut ..ect
The thing with SM is they never really force a specific style on their artists. Years before choosing members of a group, song and concept of the group are already decided years back and they choose trainees that match the concept. Because they have a lot of trainees, its more concept->trainees who fit concept. and not "we have this trainee, let's fit him into this concept"
It's hard for me to watch f(x) videos since Sulli's passing but thank you for appreciating the girls in this video.

Aww this is so nostalgic for me. I've been listening to kpop since 2006 and I loved f(x) when they debuted. I did fall out of the loop later on because I just didn't actively follow comebacks etc or have any kpop friends the way I do now so listening to kpop was a way more "distant" experience for me at that time. But during the era of these three songs I was still more involved and I still love all these songs.

Yes, Amber can sing!! Ironically, of the 5 members Amber was the one signed on purely due to her vocal skills. While Luna & Victoria could sing, they were not at levels yet where they would be signed as singers. They were signed as dancers 1st. Krystal & Sulli were both signed at younger ages for acting/modeling, with interest in singing training, but when they joined SM they hadn't reached the point that they would be signed as vocalists either.
edit: I did remark under another comment that it's funny SM didn't immediately realize Luna's potential to become a power vocalist once she got more training. Due to her mom & grandmother both being opera singers, Luna's twin was already following in their footsteps.

No, Amber was the first female in a gg to be androgynous and have her own style (which was very strange back in 2008 but it did showcase the risks that f(x) would take for an experimental look and sound)!! Her well known "successor" is Moonbyul! Both icons in the k industry for favouring androgyny and more "male" styles in fashion and in vocal timbre..but just overall being themselves and denying the overly feminized gg concept/image
The one Austin liked was Sulli! Rest In Peace to the queen! When I came across F(x) Sulli was the one that catched my eye, she was my favorite. After some digging I was heartbroken to see she had passed away :(
