      GPU core's memory controller is more sensitive than memory chip. Very low chance of having a functional core, Sorin is right.

    Hi Sorin in your next video you have backlight but no picture. You completely dismiss looking at screen connector and then screen, why? In past videos thats your usual method of diagnosis. Why continue down other paths and ignore display. No picture on hdmi, true, but still I would have taken a peak. Also , probably a few laptops binned because I could not confirm bios files good or not. Perseverance is king. Well done.

    But hang on, why is desoldering the only way? Can't you inject 1V on the 19V B+ rail first and then check if that 1V penetrated to any of the coils? That way you could detect a partial shorted mosfet powering some of the critical components like the CPU, GPU, chipset or anything else. If none of the coils show voltage leaking to them then you can be certain that all your critical components are behind good mosfets and you can inject more voltage. Am I thinking straight here?

    • @LordAnubis0909
      @LordAnubis0909 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      i think i done something like that. ha had shorted 3.3V line mosfet. since i was going in with 19V on mail rail, 19V was going to 3.3v line :) since i had no protection :)
      i was learning on samo junk laptop so not a big problem but still, learned my lesson

    • @vlatkosurlan545
      @vlatkosurlan545 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      @@LordAnubis0909 Well, that's a very valuable lesson to learn. Now you can pick out which rail is shorted with ease. Just inject 1V to 19V B+ and measure on the coils. Wherever you detect voltage is where you have the short and then, on top of knowing where the issue is, now that you know which component has the leaky mosfet you can increase the voltage up to the voltage of that component to get a thermal signature on the shorted mosfet. In theory it sounds good but in practice there might be issues so it needs to be tested.

    • @elisaab1990
      @elisaab1990 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      You dont even need to inject voltage)) just put your meter in resistance mode one probe to 19v and another one to coils one by one. Coil that shows 0 ohm is one that is shorted to 19v. That is it😂

    • @vlatkosurlan545
      @vlatkosurlan545 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@elisaab1990 Can it be that the layers in the mosfets sometimes only break down under more voltage? ChatGPT seems to agree: "Yes, it is possible for a MOSFET to exhibit intermittent failure where it breaks down under voltage but appears functional when tested in diode mode or beep mode with a multimeter."

    • @elisaab1990
      @elisaab1990 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      If it is a fault like that in 99 percent of the cases this method will work. If it will not you well need more than 1 volt to detect it and it is dangerous. You can also guess the power supply from its resistance for example 60 ohms in this case could be vram or cpu logic you don't need to check all and you will learn that by time

  • @lis6502
    @lis6502 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    isn't this like gpu core has another power rail and vram separate? i mean sure, if vram expecting 1.2V got 19V it could damage the gpu but this is also to be tested, not neccesairly asserted. Here we see that vram's rail taking some reasonable current but what about actual gpu?

    • @DIYRepairHour
      @DIYRepairHour 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      yes, the vmem rail is connected to all memory chips and memory controller inside the GPU itself as well.
      but the main power rail is separate, and it has variable output depending on GPU demand (it is steered by the core itself via VRM IC).
      vmem rail short is bad because the memory controller is very fragile, but it is NOT always the case it will go bad, as memory chip can act as a fuse itself.
      tests needs to be run to determine the amount of damage. but these are a software tests.
      45-60 ohm on vmem is perfectly healthy in this case, it should not take more current than it suppose to.
      even if you loose some portion of memory controller due to a short, part of it can be disabled, and have a still working GPU but with less memory.

    Hey everyone, need an advice, what if we remove inductor in order to "disconnect" GPU CPU CHIPSET etc just to isolate a faulty main component from the main power rail?
    What I mean is : the 63ohm resistance, would it still be present if we remove the inductor for VRAM ?
    Is this just a garbage idea ?

    • @bariscosmaz
      @bariscosmaz 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @Stry-Glitch In this case, no. There would be no 63 ohm on the main power rail if the inductor is removed because the faulty mosfet connects the main power rail to the ground through the gpu and VRAM. However, what you would see if you probe between the main power and the mosfet side of the inductor is a 0 or very close to 0 ohm resistance and the main power rail 63 ohm resistance would be gone. This can be useful to see on which side there is a short or which mosfet is faulty when there are multiple buck converters powering the same chip.

      Unfortunately, being detected does not equal alive. The IMC could be fried which would still allow it to pass vbios information but the core itself would be functionally useless since it won't be able to use any VRAM. But in this case, we don't actually know since Sorin did not test it with the proper software.

    • @wasddasw6485
      @wasddasw6485 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@adaniel69 GPU-Z is not a useful tool when dealing with GPUs in a less than perfect condition. It's the complete wrong tool for this situation. Reboot will also not change a thing since there's a hardware failure.
      The right way would be to boot into a Linux USB with the Nvidia MATS/MODS tool installed and perform a proper memory test to find out exactly which VRAM chips are dead. It gives a pretty good idea whether or not the core's IMC is actually dead as well. What Sorin did this video was jump to the conclusion that the core is dead based only on the fact that it ate a pulse of19v.

    You can't be jumping to conclusions about GPU death just by looking at GPU-Z. I know from experience that GPU-Z is garbage when dealing with a GPU that isn't perfectly functional. Have 2 GPUs in the system but one is dead? OK, it'll just show the details of the working GPU when looking at the dead GPU. Trying to access sensors on the dead GPU? It'll show the sensors of the working GPU instead. Don't trust GPU-Z for anything to do with a hardware fault.
    You need to use the NVIDIA MATS/MODS software to run a proper memory test before you declare the GPU as actually dead. Takes less than 5 mins to do the test and it can tell you exactly which memory chips you need to replace. If it says that they're all dead, that's when you can consider writing off the core as a dead IMC.
