If you want to hear the violinist go insane, just check out their live stuff. Angreifer and Tower of Blood are awesome. Also, their cover of Dance of Eternity by Dream Theater is just outrageous.

SHIREN 紫煉 is the owner of the harsh voice, SHIREN was also a member of KAMI BAND of Babymetal and a member of the band of an extraordinary, exceptional YOUSEY TEIKOKU, to hear his harsh voice well you have to listen to " Unending Sorceress " also by UNLUCKY MORPHEUS.

This band it's brilliant and the most underrated of all. Even a lot of reactors to the Japanese rock scene have few reactions to them. The growler is Shiren, leader, guitar player and writer of the music. Fuki it's the voice, Jill the violinist (who grow in importance in the last years), Jinya it's the other badass guitar player (the "boy face" of the two), Fumiya the ligthing speed drummer and Ogawa the bassist, the more grounded looking and less "game/anime like" character of the band. All are fantastic, really fantastic Fuki has the charisma of a Star and the tireless work ethics of Leonardo Da Vinci.

  • @Socrates_1775

Excellent reaction! Unlucky Morpheus started as a side project and every member has been in other bands or projects. The singer, Fuki has fronted at least 4 bands and solo/collaborations. She even performed at a festival with 2 different bands and sang a 2hr set with each band. The guitarist who does the harsh vocals, Shiren, writes and composes their music. He is also an original Kami Band member with Babymetal. Fuki and Shiren are the founders of Unlucky Morpheus. If you want to hear more of Fuki's range, check out Dignity of Spirit. If you want more violin try Tower of Blood 🤘😊🤘

Congrats on finding Unlucky Morpheus-one of the best, most creative bands in the world today. My top suggestion for a live clip: “Angreifer” th-cam.com/video/gGKWgM4IOgc/w-d-xo.html -- a much bigger role for the violin as well.
Amid all the (justified) excitement over the Japanese all-female metal bands, we forget there are plenty of guys who throw down. Shiren, founder and one of the guitarists, also does the growls. Fumiya (Drums) is, as you saw, insane and inexhaustible-one of the best rock drummers in the world. Jinya (G) and Ogawa (B) are solid as well. Fumiya and Ogawa also have interesting, “beast” personae which contrast with the “beauty” of Fuki and Jill. That contrast is a deliberate trope, similar to the “Beauty and the Beast” imagery of many European symphonic metal bands.
Fuki (lead singer) is a legend in Japan, and one of the busiest artists anywhere. She is lead singer for UM, Doll$boxx, Lightbringer and her own ongoing project, Fuki Commune. Her style is very much out of the Japanese classical tradition, with the oversold vibrato and intense high notes. She collaborates with a lot of the top musical talents in Japan. Jill (violin) also has a busy dance card, including collaborations with Fuki outside UM.
Jill is actually my favorite member of Unlucky Morpheus. I consider her the best rock/jazz/metal violinist in the world today, and probably the best since Jean-Luc Ponty. After Shiren (founder, original lead guitarist) started suffering from an injury that limits his playing, they rewrote a lot of his solos for Jill. Here are links to instrumentals featuring her in UM’s instrumental project Quadratum:
Cover of van Halen "Eruption" th-cam.com/video/eTb0TQtVT6k/w-d-xo.html
Cover of Malmsteen "Far Beyond the Sun" th-cam.com/video/E2hZDzJp9Pc/w-d-xo.html Cover of Dream Theater, played blindfolded: th-cam.com/video/8eZVVtaOBKk/w-d-xo.html
I saw UM live in London in 2019, when they headlined Metal Matsuri. Great show, and the chemistry between Fuki and Jill was electric.

Fun fact: Shiren (Lead Guitar) played with the "Kami Band" (BabyMetal) in their early days. He also played in another great band Yōsei_Teikoku aka " Das Feenreich " They are another great Goth inspired rock/metal band.

What i love about these japanese bands is while they can shred the absolute shit out of their instruments and play insanely fast and all that, they don´t shred for the sake of shredding but every solo and every note brings something to the song. It´s not just "hey, now we´ll do a crazy solo just to show off" but more like "here is a solo that will blow your mind but also bring the song to the next level".

Fuki is an awesome vocalist and very prolific. She has been many different projects through the years. Solo projects like Fuki and Fuki Commune. Calaborations like Doll$Boxx with members of Gacharic Spin and featured vocalist on solo project with SYU of Gyneyrus. Lightbringer was another band she was in. UM is her main focus these days. She and Jill the violinist have done some singles together as well. Jill has done several things over the years as well. She was most recently featured on a Fate Gear album in a song called Sky Pirates. There is a video of that one if your interested.

If you love Fuki's (the vocalist) theatrics in this video, you're going to love their live performances, especially when she dances and headbangs around on stage. In my opinion she's the best metal vocalist there is today if you consider singing ability, stage presence and style.
The thing with Japanese bands/musicians/groups is simply that if they're not as close to perfect as possible they won't get the chance to record music. The same goes for their live performances. If they can't replicate studio tracks (or dancing in music videos), or at least compensate with something else on stage, they embarass themselves and the people who produce/support them. It's part of their culture to never make mistakes in front of other people, regardless of your profession (this is also one of the biggest reasons why their foreign languages education is so bad).

Doll$boxx - Dragonet Live. One of my absolute favourite performances by Fuki. Had the absolute pleasure of meeting her in London when she performed solo at Hyper Japan. She is hands down my favourite vocalist. Such power and versatility in the range of music she has done in the past. She's just amazing. And Unlucky Morpheus are a fantastic unit. A lot of their music has deep roots in classical.
And yes; it's Shiren (the guitarist with the tattoos up his neck) doing the growling. Would absolutely recommend checking out the highlight videos they did for Jill's violin playing. She is fantastic. Also worth checking out Lightbringer (her previous band), but she has worked with a lot of artists and is well known as a solo vocalist.
Japan is fucking crushing it with acts at the moment and while this song is new, the band isn't. Japan has had amazing bands for a long time now, they're just only now getting the exposure they deserve.

Thank you for your reaction to my favorite Unlucky Morpheus.
It was a very nice reaction.
I also like LOVEBITES, but the two bands are very common.
    1. Overwhelming singing ability of vocals
(Of course, your singing ability is also wonderful)
    2. Overwhelming playing technique
    3. Overwhelming speed metal
    4. Overwhelmingly dramatic and melodious beautiful melody
In addition, Unlucky Morpheus even has a transcendental violinist.
Unlucky Morpheus is irresistible for the dark world view written by Fuki.
All of their songs are wonderfully moving.
In particular, LIVE videos are more impressive than MVs.
Please continue to react to Unlucky Morpheus.
I especially recommend "Opfer". Some fans even start crying when they hear it.
In the current LIVE version of Black Penetagram, the guitar solo part has been replaced with a violin.

You can hear the influence of classical music in a lot of their songs, which is not limited to the fact that they have a violin. "Angreifer" the live version has a violin solo substituting for one of the guitars in the studio version. "Unending Sorceress" has a nice violin solo, and outstanding costuming and visual effects. If you can find translations, read their song lyrics too.

Hi Anastasia, I don't need to supply you with more suggestions on Unlucky Morpheus - all things necessary have yet been posted in the earlier comments. Plz stay on doing your refreshing and unique reactions (thanks!), and put your own music yet a little bit more frontwards, I'd appreciate it! And stick on reacting to Unlucky Morpheus, one single week just won't be enough to explore them fully, I guess.
As it happened, I stumbled upon a brand new band with some quite famous members some days ago. This band, Saiseiga, will release it's first mini-LP in January 27, their vocalist Regan (formerly known as Azul) and drummer Tohko were members of the legendary girls heavy rock band "Zettai Club" (Saki from Nemophila is a fan of them). My suggestion: check Saiseiga's one-month old video "Ride On", it's a very fast paced, ultra heavy, but beautiful, melodic song. You'll be pleasantly surprised again ... (th-cam.com/video/4spnw5RJCKE/w-d-xo.html). Have a nice week!

Where to start with UM? As others have said, Fuki is quite prolific in her collaborations. She looks different in every video, too. Jill, the violinist, has her own TH-cam channel and goes live every so often. She's adorable; her eyes are so big that she looks like she's half gray alien. She's a graduate of Tokyo University of the Arts, quite the prestigious school. Shiren, the guitarist with red hair, is the one doing the growling. He has tenosynovitis, a painful condition that restricts his ability to play the guitar. That's why he almost always plays a headless guitar; it's lighter. If you ever see him playing a guitar on a stand or not playing at all, that's why. Jill covers his lead parts live when his condition is affecting him. Shiren played in Babymetal's Kami band once. It was in their early days (2012) during a show called Legend I, known as the first show in the live album Legend IDZ Apocalypse. I think he only played during the two encore songs, but I could be wrong. Fumiya, the beast of a drummer, used to be in Galneryus.

That was awesome. My thoughts exactly! I love this song and this band and this singer. Please check out Fuki singing with Gacharic Spin in the DOLL$BOXX side project. Start with Take My Chance or Merrily High Go Round and then get into Gacharic Spin with I Wish I and then Mindset. I promise they will absolutely deliver. Japan's rock and metal scene has blown my mind right open.
You also need to check out Maximum the Hormone. Evil geniuses who planted many glorious seeds. Band-Maid's drummer Akane counts their drummer Nao as one of her main influences, Nemophila has covered their music. And they are bonkers AF. HIGHLY recommend Maximum the Hormone - Yoshu Fukushu.
And keep the Unleash the Archers coming! They are damn near all I listen to that isn't out of Japan right now. But they might be tops. Depends what I am listening to at the moment. Brittney Inspires me.
There are more. And they are important. I will save them.

Also interesting to know: Mao, the keyboardist of Fuki's former band Light Bringer, is good friends with Lovebites and works closely with them. A shame that Light Bringer aren't active anymore. They were a good band in their own right.

TL/DR Unlucky Morpheus great, better live. Jill is a goddess. Try Angreifer or Dignity Of Spirit.
Unlucky Morpheus a band that was 8 years in the making, the band was started as a side project between the singer Fuki and Shiren (guitar). They started with metal versions of a popular Japanese game. They released a few albums and fans wanted to see them live, so they got some friends to help them out live. These concerts were also auditions for other band members, if they fitted in with the sound Shiren wanted in the band, after a few show he'd as if they wanted to join. The only one that didn't do this was Jill, as soon as Shiren her her play, he knew it was a sound he wanted in the band. Jill had played in a few rock/metal bands up to this point.
Fuki is the only member of the band that has not had any training, she coppied her mothers style of singing.
Most of the band went to MI Tokyo (Musicians Institute), that is were Shrien and Ogawa met 1st.
Jill graduated Tokyo University of the Arts, playing violin, which is the most prestigious art school in Japan. Jill claims she can hear pitch perfect, due to the way she was trained at a young age. When she was 1st taught to play, it was by ear and not sheet music, and she can almost play anything on the violin that you can play on a guitar, inc pinch notes. Jill maybe the most popular member of the band, next to Fuki.
Ogawa is really a jazz bassist, and was the protégé of Fujioka Mikio, who you may know from Babymetals Kami Band. And still plays in a popular Jazz band.
Shiren The band's leader and co-founder. Guitars, Harsh vocals, Bass, Keyboards, Piano, Programming, Drums, Percussion, Arrangement, Composition, and various other instruments, and writes all the music and some of the lyrics. He was also in the 1st Kami band at Legend i. He is suffering from tendonitis of the wrist, so has to rest it at times when playing live, which is when Jill will take over his guitar parts on violin.
Jinya youngest member of the band in age, and was found by Fuki, who told Shiren to check out.
Fumiya, drummer and just a beast behind the drum kit.
Fuki is just a force of nature, she is a workaholic, in18 years she has be involved in around 100 releases, mostly full albums. Apart from UM she is also the singer in a rock band called Doll$boxx another side project that is between her and Gacharic Spin (a all female rock/funk band). She also has her own solo project, as well asd being a guest vocalist in many other bands. She used to be in a band called Light Bringer, who are in hiatus. She also does voice acting, she used to run a radio show, she has a kanji kentai level 1 degree, and she is a Sugino fashion college costume creation graduate, she makes some of the costumes she and the band wear and she has also done some modling work.
All the members of the band used to be in other bands, as UM were a side project, but after 2016 the band became more full time, and did their 1st tour of Japan in 2017. They released their 1st metal album of there own work in 2014. Black Pentagram was the 1st video they released, and yes Jill seems to be down in the mix, something they tend not to do now, down to her popularity with the fans, they even released an album of instrumetal covers in which, according to Fuki, the violin is the vocals. Some of the members still are in other bands, but tend to look on UM as their main band.
They have played outside Japan once, which was at a festival in London, which is where I got to see and met them. Due to the popularity overseas they have said they want to do a world tour some day, when events let them. They are a band that just loves to play and play together, you can tell that they are really good friends by the way they interact with each other on stage, and you get the feeling that they would still play, if there was only 1 man and his dog turn up and still give everthing.
They are also a truly independent band, they have their own label, produce everything, self promote, book tours, t-shirt design, everything is done by the band themselves, mainly Shiren and Fuki, and that is the reason why this great, overly talleneted band are not bigger than they are.
Next try Angreifer or Dignity Of Spirit.

Let me recommend you a song by MARY'S BLOOD - MARIONETTE, this group is also all female, SAKY, the guitarist, is the same who plays in the group NEMOPHILA and AMAHIRU, in this song is shocking how it sounds, really impressive, not to mention the very special voice of EYE, EYE comes from the dissolution of the group DESTROSE, where HARUNA of LOVEBITES also comes from, thanks for your attention.

Fuki is really gorgeous to look at isn't she? 😉 The style she is singing in is Shigin which is used in Japanese poetry. There's another style called Enka that is used in old Japanese pop music (*not J-Pop) back in the 1970's and 1980's.
Fuki has no formal vocal training in singing or in Shigin. It just came naturally to her. She is a very busy woman with other side projects other than Unlucky Morpheus such as another band Doll$boxx that is like a super group.
Please react to this song next, 'Dignity of Spirit' which really emphasize's Fuki's Shigin singing.
    th-cam.com/video/x7W9DcUKY_U/w-d-xo.html
Edit: You'll notice Fuki has a lot of energy and always jumping around while she is singing.

    Awesome commenting :D
If you're gonna do UM week, i have some recommendations as they have several sounds to their music (check them live, their lives are the best ones)
epic sounding: Satsuriku no Miseria, Get revenge on the tyrant, with dark sound: Angreifer, Opfer, Unending sorceress, Phantom blood
straight up power metal: Knight of Sword, Dignity of Spirit, Dragon Force, Karasu Tengu..
Fun youthful: M revolution, Top of the M, Make your choice..
    Cadaver/Revedac
their acoustics live: Endless Control, Hyakki Hikou, imagimak..
Emotional somewhat sentimental but rather youthful sounding: Toraware bokura, Wings, Change of Generation, Kyoumo no koibito..
mixed with traditional Japanese chant: 鉄皇
And there are some that have dark children song/folklore sounds: Siva, Tower of the blood, Hyakki Hikou, Heaped Heart, imagimak, Perverseness, whole Vampir EP, 籠の鳥...
Edit: they have sub-unit of 4 Quadratum (drummer-FUMIYA, bassist-Ogawa, violinist-Jill and one guitarist-Jinya) that did cover for many metal classics too.

Check out some of the live stuff; it's a lot easier to hear the violin. Try Knight of Sword, Angriefer, and (if you can find the live version) Cadaver/Revadac. Also, Carry on Singing to the Sky is actually in English, and has a sweet violin part. Her English sounds pretty good in it too. Also, the live version of this song is pretty good too, and the violin is way more prounounced.

You haven't seen nothing yet with Unlucky Morpheus. They are elite musicians and in this particular song, you can't really hear Jill, the violinist.
Ankimo (for short) are so much better live and songs like "Angriefer" or "Dignity of Spirit" will show you what they are capable of. Fuki's voice is a pure delight.
Speaking of Fuki, she also has multiple side projects including DOLL$BOXX which consist of the band Gacharic Spin and her on the vocals. You should definitely start with the song "Take My Chance".
    Thank you
