Awesome stuff Lon! Finally, a one cable solution! Alas, perhaps if it's a dock for a single device and you already know what it supports, there might be cheaper solutions. Pretty neat that it can go with either usb-c and thunderbolt though. Great if you are gonna use multiple devices, some of which are usb-c, some that are thunderbolt.
Couple of notes based on some feedback: 1. Yes this is expensive, but all Thunderbolt docks are. It's in the ballpark with other docks and this one has the USB-C functionality. 2. "But Lon, USB-C now runs at 20 gigabits per second!" Find me a laptop that has a USB-C 20 port vs. Thunderbolt. I don't think there is one at the moment - manufacturers at the high end just opt for Thunderbolt.
On a side note, Dell's WD19TB is also compatible with both TB3 and non-TB USB-C devices, with the regular WD19 version being USB-C only. It requires TB3 for 4K60p and can only do half the refresh rate with a USB-C connection, but along with USB3 speeds. Some USB-C docks are able to do 4K60p, but reduce the USB speeds to USB2, this one is not capable of that.
Just as important for image quality is colo(u)r depth - especially if you are a photographer, or are viewing or editing “HDR” video. It was interesting to me that the Mac on thunderbolt supported full 10 bits per channel colour while the Windows computer on USB-c only supported 8 bits per channel.
Im so weary of TB3 Docks. I have tried about 4 from amazon. Calgiti, Startech, Noda, Belkin. All have one quirk with them all that made me return them. One or more ports would not work. Not every port works as advertised. On 3 of them the DisplayPort did not work at all. But when I try my cheap $30 USBc Dongle Hub the display port works, the ethernet works, the two USBa ports work ALL AT ONCE. Yet when I try one of these expensive all in one TB3 docks I always get some of the ports working and then the important ones never work or glitch when I have to many devices plugged. I have tried these docks with multiple TB3 cables, drivers are all up to date, im using a 2019 16inch MBP fully suped up 64gb ram i9 etc...These docks all say Intel certified TB3 yet why do they all have a quirk. Why issnt there a company that can make a flawless TB3 docks. I feel like the TB3 protocol chip still needs some work when handling multiple bandwidths at once. IDK....ive just stuck to using my cheap USBc Dongle that seems to be flawless at handling whatever I throw at it.
That is all good to know about USB C vs Thunderbolt 3 ,,, ,but ,,,,, About changing Laptops. Can be charged Laptops that have USB Type C (3.1gen1-3.1gen2 ) ??? or only if it is with Thunderbolt 3

@@LonSeidman T.Y but I did not quite understand your answer, I saw in the video that you connect an ipad pro, if I insert a particularly fast SD card into the card reader port, let's say it has a potential reading speed of 150mb/s, what the actual reading speed will be via the ipad pro and TB3CDOCKDP?
Nice review, Lon. I'm looking for a dock for my iPad Pro (latest model bought last summer). I want hdmi and all the usb connections. I understand that not all docks work with the iPad Pro, which makes selection difficult.
By chance did you try dual monitors with MacOS through this dock? MacOS is notorious for not liking dual monitors off one TB port and I was wondering how this dock preformed. Great great video, thank you!!!
Do you recommend having a dock station with a 85w PD connected from Macbook Pro 16" with two extended monitor screen would it damage the battery? if not, what wattage/PD would you recommend for Macbook Pro 16" with two extended monitor screen? Awesome review btw!!

I have a gaming laptop, so I need to still use my laptop power adapter. Am I able to plug this dock in without having to worry about my computer getting fried or anything?
Correct me if I'm wrong, but Thunderbolt 3 is already compatible with USB 3.x. Isn't EVERY Thunderbolt 3 dock automatically a USB 3.x dock if that is what device you plug into its USB-C port?
Hi Lon, thanks for this video, I added my like. Two questions please: 1) Is there another similar hub you know of that has dual USB-C and Thunderbolt connection that offers dual HDMI ports instead of dual DisplayPorts? My Windows laptops only have USB-C port and HDMI. 2) Is there any hub that is capable of attaching accessories to 2 separate laptops and being able to toggle back and forth between 2 laptops similar to an HDMI switch device? I have 2 different laptops connected to 1 external monitor via an HDMI switch. I want to connect various accessories from 2 separate laptops onto 1 usb docking hub station and switch back and forth as needed. I'm guessing this is not possible.
Ok, I had to pause at 1:06 when I heard the price. At fricking 240 USD American Dollars From the United States, it'd better be a damn good dock that toasts toasts and makes coffee. Edit: wow a dock that only does its job, what a society we live in
What can Mac users with older original Thunderbolt (1) do to keep their Macs up to date? I have a 2011 27" iMac which is a good machine but lacks an SSD, USB 3 and only has the original Thunderbolt. I'd like to attach an external bootable SSD drive to the Thunderbolt port but it is hard to get anything affordable, let alone available. I was hoping to get a LaCie 2.5" Thunderbolt drive and swap out the HDD for a SSD, but those are unobtainable as well.
Which MacBook Pro did you use, and with which MacOS version? My 16" running 10.15.3 doesn't work with this dock at the moment... the video outputs don't work. I spoke with Startech support last week on the phone and they confirmed Thunderbolt support is broken on the current version of MacOS. Apparently it worked until a few updates ago, and they're waiting for Apple to fix it.

USB-C implementation of this dock is Intel Titan Ridge based yet only supports HBR2 with only two high speed lanes provided for Displayport traffic, thus the 4K@30Hz resolution cap. Pretty disappointing considering the steep price!
Hey Lon, since Thunderbolt 3 theoretical max is 40Gbps, shouldn't the dock be able to max out all the ports (given is 5+5+10+10+10) when no display is attached?
Weird that the "to the PC" port is on the front, but not much else. I want a bunch of USB 3.x ports on the front to plug in flash drives and such. And no HDMI. Another odd choice. This thing seems pretty poorly thought out.
