The scene where Pumpkin head walks past the large cabin window is still my fave, just the sheer size of the creature, I was expecting a more human sized creature....this design stands tall between the Alien and the Predator.
    Keep the awesome vids coming!

I weep for the current generation. They will only know computer generated monsters. When effects teams BUILT their monsters, that's what made them so scary. You could see and touch them, and often there was an actor inside them. I will NEVER be frightened of a computer generated monster.

Did you get to see "Annihilation"? The skull bear scene in that film I think is one of the more impressive examples of the use of animatronic + CG in recent film, and I think that from a visual effects standpoint, one thing that should always remain consistent in order to make an impact on the actor's performances and the audience's ability to tell if something is "real" or not is to make sure that the two (computer-generated & practical prosthetics and animatronics) are seamlessly blended, rather than one being used solely over the other.

I know that feel bro... Horror movies nowadays are so lame and boring. They all look the same for me. And they look so fake, we don't even care about the fake CGI crap monsters. I feel sad for this generation too.

I absolutely agree with you!! That is something I've been saying for years! Any of the behind scenes featurettes you'd see from the late 70's and through the 80's, you'd see the effects team workshop filled with all these fantastic creatures and weird characters and the sheer effort and love that goes into making them! ILM was one such place, whereas now it's a bland office space filled with people sitting at computers and animating things, It's soulless!! These days there's guys in motion capture suits leaping around going RAAARRR only to be animated in later, it's laughable!! I also remember seeing an online article for Giant Freakin' Robot or something along those lines for the proposed remake of "The Creature from the Black Lagoon!" (Which John Carpenter was going to direct in the early 90's, his script is online too apparently!) However, this article showed a creature design and the author of the article said "If Universal could get behind this with some serious CGI, this will be awesome!" WHY??? CGI is not fucking scary, if anything it takes you out of the physicality of the scene!! When an effect is 'In Camera' it grounds you in the illusion, there's a physical presence! Jaws, Pumpkinhead, Alien, the Werewolf from American Werewolf in London, John Carpenter's The Thing, Predator to name but a few all have memorable monsters because they were slap bang in front of us, they interacted with the cast and these fuckers had a nightmarish presence! When practical special effects are on set, it gives the actors something to react to, it drives their performance and makes their plight to survive all the more exciting for us, the audience, to be drawn in! CGI does have its uses, granted but practical special effects will always be superior due to the emotions they illicit from us and our nightmares. The scene with Pumpkinhead leering into the kid's face in the wardrobe with his drooling, twisted smile has stuck with me since I was an 11 year old kid back in '87! I even showed some of my younger workmates the Chest ripper scene and Blood test scene from The Thing, they were opened mouthed and were saying "WHAT THE FUCK WAS THAT?" later, they came up asking me about more films like that, I told them to look up Pumpkinhead first!! Old school movie monsters fucking rule!!!

As a native of Appalachia, this film scared the shit out of me as a kid. I remember a new kid that moved here and he asked me if Pumpkinhead was a real legend.
On behalf of monster/slasher/horror fans, I thank the Stan Winston School. The tireless efforts you put forth to bring fantasies, dreams, nightmares, and imagination to life can never be fully appreciated.
Also a big thank you to the man himself- Stan Winston R.I.P. for creating Pumpkinhead, one of my favorite films. May your legacy never die.

So inspiring. I first saw "Pumpkinhead" late at night, all by myself, on one of the cable movie channels, and though I sometimes avoid a number of the newer-style horror movies (maximum blood and gore, minimum story and writing), when I saw that it was not only FX'd by Stan Winston's shop, but was also directed by Mr. Winston, I was hooked, watched it, got scared to death, and was amazed by every second of it. The fact that your artistry took the beautiful face, anatomy, and grace of the marvelous Lance Henriksen and turned him into a creature with so terrifying an aspect, of such ferocity, and yet of such incredible singularity and style, was, and is, an accomplishment that nobody else can match. You guys are the greatest in the world. I wish Mr. Stan Winston had directed many more films. Thank you so very much for sharing your unmatched artistry here. I love it. And I'm learning from it. Blessings to you all!

    • @Joshua_N-A
      @Joshua_N-A 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

CGI should be only used when it's *NECESSARY* and *impossible to do pratically not oversaturating them. Rendering the texture to make it look very realistic takes time, talent and money. You don't want to use up all of your budget and the studio may not be giving anymore money if they see the cost overruns.

It takes time to render those textures to make it look very realistic and that costs time, manpower and money. You need to properly distribute your budget as the studio may not giving any more of it.

I've always loved Pumpkinhead's design since I was a kid and always thought he was an underrated creature. One of the most terrifying aspect of that monster is his height, shoulders, and his eyes...well, everything about that creature is just simply menacing. Awesome creature. I think maybe a remake is in order even though the first film is still a very, very dark and eerie film and is a classic in my book. I actually want a newer generation to see this creature because I think it deserves it.

A Pumpkinhead Prequel movie might be interesting.. A movie that explores the background of Haggis (the witch), the deformed child who was buried in the pumpkin patch, and the origins of the Pumpkinhead demon. As part of the story, Haggis could be seen as a young woman, showing how she became a witch and how her connection with Pumpkinhead began.. This story could take place, before any of the other characters, in the first movie, were born. Haggis has obviously lived a LONG time, and there could be an interesting story to tell..

Florence Schauffler should've been given an Academy Award for her outstanding performance! Without the character of Haggis the witch of the woods, this film would've been another ordinary horror movie. Incidentally, Haggis is actually a Scottish pudding made from sheep innards, oatmeal, onion and spices. Rest in peace, Florence Schauffler.

I have done SFX makeup for years and just started getting into props and Masks. Pumpkinhead is my favorite monster and I have been wanting to do this for Halloween for years. Even just make a marquee. I will be over ambitious and try to recreate him in the next year or so. lol. It will probably take that long.

Thanks very much. As soon as my work is in anyway decent, I will show it. I don't know why, but designing monsters is just something that I love. Making them is a bit different, since I do that mostly digitally (taught myself 3D Max, trying to figure out Zbrush). I hope to get more training, as I feel my drawing skills need work, especially anatomy and other areas. since drawing is what I love.

when i was 4 years old i watched pumpkinhead. it was the scariest thing ever to me i was so scared i was afraid to walk into the bathroom and needed someone to go in there and open the shower door and turn the light on to make sure pumpkinhead was in there. i was a little metal head at a early age with the jean jacket and heavy metal patches so i hung out with my old sisters and i watched all the scary movies they never bothered me. but for some damn reason seeing pumpkinhead in the trees and hearing the audio tapes scared the shit out of me. he looked so real back then i was convinced it was the one creature that was actually real lol.

This is a really great video, I love seeing the stages of development and the fact that you guys work with real materials! Given for the time period there wasn't much choice, but I prefer foam and plastic models to computer graphics any day. Help keep old school FX alive!

Thanks so much for all your hard work. The one thing I think is so important in this line of work is not teachable, it the fact that you all had fun, and it shows. Thanks for posting. Sleep with one eye open and have a "HORRIFIC" day. B)

Del, Welcome to our channel. We hear you!! Our mission with Stan Winston School is to remind people that the best way to create a BELIEVABLE fantasy character is to use every trick in the book. There's nothing wrong with CGI, but it's just one tool. We need to get back to using all the tools. And it's happening, we're at the beginning of a Pratical FX Renaissance! Thanks for keeping the faith. -Matt

Stan Winston School CGI causes anaconda to fly and lake placcid aligator runs like roided michael johnson, too many movie sequels got destroyed by cgi that older generations will not watch movies in cinema anymore.

I like to think of Pumpkinhead as the last rubber movie monster, although I think that credit goes to that blobby guy in Slither.
Nowadays, the only times you'll ever see a rubber suit is in a remake, sequel, or foreign film. Even comic movies are doing more and more creatures in CGI, like in Guardians of the Galaxy, or that new Fantastic 4 movie.

+GIGGEDandBLADED Okay, you got me there. That, or I should have included continuations in my list. This is news to me, though. Around the time I wrote that comment, the last anyone heard of Star Wars, even Yoda had gone digital.

Really interesting show. What is the semi-transparent material you use for the "skull" - you could see it clearly on the baby head. Is it fibreglass?

Pumpkinhead has to be my favorite of the 80's traditional monster boom. I love my serial killers like Jason and Michael, but nothing beats creature effects like Stan used to do.
Plus Pumpkinhead creeps me out a bit with how he has a human face if you look at him head on in the original film. That sneaky grin....cracked looking eyes....intelligent almost Xenomorph cunningness.....5 stars guys. 5 stars.
