    I think the ladies' skepticism about Jesse is very interesting. I have a feeling it reflects a generational shift in what women find attractive. I am a guy, so I could be off here, but my recollection is that Ethan Hawke specifically, and his character Jesse's artistic, cynical, brooding, slacker vibe were kind of the height of male attractiveness for Gen X women, whereas these days that broody cynicism is a significant turn off.

    • @GojoDKai
      @GojoDKai 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +13

      Jesse’s hot and he’s not an idiot. But as a straight guy, he has some yellow flags. With the story about his friend and his cynicism, like they said believe in the magic of life a little. Or at least, don’t bring the mood down for others.

    • @FesterSilently
      @FesterSilently 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

      Gen-X-er here who saw this movie when it came out (and has been rewatching it - and the whole trilogy - on repeat ever since): I don't remember *exactly* how I felt about Jesse on that first watch (at least mildly put off by some of his weird mannerisms & red flags), but, MAN - in the intervening years, watching him throughout this movie has become more and more cringe-inducing.
      Like, I nearly turned away from the screen each time his douchey-ness/bro-ness came to the fore...lol.
      In any case, that is COMPLETELY solved by the second movie.
      "Before Sunset", FTW! :D

      @@FesterSilently Isn't the bro-ness a product of being 23 and male. Not a fully formed man yet. What was Celine's character flaw. Isn't she a betty character. Attractive, intelligent, open, great listener. The Jesse character is a better representation of a real person

    • @citydweller99
      @citydweller99 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      This is a generational thing that I don't either lady can understand. It is interesting to see a more modern 2023 perspective on a movie that was about Gen X and their experiences in their 20s.

    • @davidstevenson1933
      @davidstevenson1933 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +7

      @@ryanbuysse8867 I think that a broody, cynical and critical attitude was just more socially acceptable and attractive to people in the 90's than it is now and for that reason I think there are less broody and cynical 22 year olds these days (though there are obviously plenty).
      For example, notice that succesful reactors rarely even mildly criticize the films. I think that had TH-cam beeen around in 1995 the successful reactors would be the ones that ripped into the films and actors.
      The 90's were the "don't sell out" decade. When was the last time you heard anyone criticized for selling out?
      I wouldn't say Celine is a Betty (she feels like a real and flawed person to me even if her flaws are well hidden). I do think she is a bit underwritten in this film in comparison to Jesse. I personally chalk that up to Linklater being a man and Delphy not yet having the clout/confidence to push for more character detail for Celine.

    One of my favorite movies and series ever. It’s like how I write my own screenplays-just scenes where people have the time and space to converse.
    In that effort, I even bought the screenplays to study how to make the dialogue more natural and breezy.
    Such a good film to emulate when you’re after a character study as opposed to a movie with a ton of action and movement.

    I just turned 42 5 days ago. Movie was released when I was 13. I put off watching it for so long just watching other stuff mates who are movie buffs so watching what they wanna see and stuff - and the romantic stuff maybe not my general taste 🙊 decided to watch it 2 or 3 months ago - and I’m so happy I waited til now to watch it instead of being twenties or as a teen would have been a waste. At my age having experienced genuine loss - this movie hit me harder than I could imagine. I stayed up til 5 in the morning watching the sequels. I watched them nightly for about a month and am still watching them. I just think watching at a younger age wouldn’t have had the same impact as watching them now. I’m still not over watching them to be honest

    This series is my favorite "movie" of all time. As Stella says, this movie voices a lot of what I believed, and what i came to believe, about love and connection. I saw Before Sunrise a few years before they made Before Sunset, when i was about 13. The feeling of hope and possibility at the end of the first movie stayed with me for a long time. When i learned about the next one, i decided not to watch it. I didn't want to know the reality of the outcome, because the hope was better. But after a bit of growing of my own, I decided the reality was better than a fantasy, whatever it turned out to be. This is a yearly rewatch for me, and i find that each film takes on deeper meaning as i get older. It is so genius.

    Finally, there is this person by the name of Kennedy Harryson expressing interest on leading the White Noise Reacts channel moving forward (even if the likelihood is slim). This movie is a cult classic from the 90s. Watched it many times.

    They didn’t get the credit, but Ethan and Julie rewrote much of the dialog with the director when they were shooting. The scene where he tries to get her off the train is a good example: Julie said ”I would never get off a train with a stranger like that”. So Richard Linklater said ”OK, what would it take?”. And Ethan said ”What about this…” Julie finally admitted that might do the trick. The subsequent movies in the trilogy were all co-written by the three of them, and they got a screenplay Oscar for the second movie.

    Oh, my GODS.
    I have been a fan of this trilogy since *jump*. I am SO happy you guys enjoyed this one (despite how unbelievably annoying Jesse was through at least half of it); but not NEARLY as excited as I am to see your reaction to the second movie (the best in the trilogy, IMHO)(plus, Jesse is far less annoying...lol).
    Looking forward to watching part 2 with you guys! :)
    Re: your fears about what "dating horrors" the next two movies might entail/detail...I won't spoil anything, but I *will* say that they are ONE-HUNDRED PRECENT worth the watch. They are each both grounded and wonderfully magical, all at once.

    Really awesome movie, took a chance on watching it many years ago and it has always stuck in my mind. Their chemisty is beautiful and the movie itself ended being just like Jesse wanted to do follow people around for 24 hours and just see what happens.

    22:10 I remember once I was out drinking with friends. Year 2000 I just turned 18. We were at 1 place and walked to another place. 5-6 hours between the 2 places. Drinking vodka and orange juice - $2.70 at 1 place $2.30 at the other. No bullshit. Small glasses like 300ml spent $400. You can do the math on that - it used to be semi affordable and they didn’t give a shot how blind you got. I was fairly blind

    Although it seems improvised, it’s all scripted. But it’s based off conversations the actors had, basically improv sessions. If it worked, they wrote it down. They worked with the director/writer and made it into the script. But it was all pre planned.

    I understand the boys are getting closer to discontinuing their reactions. If it's not too much to ask, I just have one final request from them, but it's their choice. I once suggested to them an old classic called "Ferngully: The Last Rainforest" from 1992. If it was up to me, that's my final request for them if they'd like.

    "Before" series is one of my favorite. I was so happy to see it here.
    Stella got very well what the series is about. The way one feels about each movie depends a lot at where one is in life. When I was in my 20' I liked "Before Sunrise" most, now I like "Before Sunset" more. Perhaps in a few years "Before Midnight" will become my favorite 😂
    Great reaction. I hope you'll decide to react to the whole series.

Then the more cynical second one came out when I was in college, which fit me perfectly. Then the frankly depressing third one came out when I was in my 30s. 😂 So I'm very attached to these movies.

    It’s hard for Richard Linklater to make a film that doesn’t echo James Joyce. As in Joyce’s ULYSSES, SLACKER wanders through a city (in this case Austin rather than Dublin) over the course of one day and a character actually reads from ULYSSES. BEFORE SUNRISE wanders through VIENNA for one day and ends with a mention of Bloomsday (June 16th), when the action of ULYSSES occurs. Later in the BEFORE series, we’ll see SHAKESPEARE & COMPANY, recalling the publisher of ULYSSES. And so forth.

    A note on how they could afford to go to restaurants but not a hotel. Food, especially small cafe food was very reasonably affordable back in the 90s. Not wine, but entree menus were a popular thing. You also got free bread and water with every meal, sometimes even free coffee and tea, especially in European cafes. He probably would have only been able to afford accommodation OR food and in that case, eating well, staying up all night and sleeping on the train back would have been the best option. Doing that with food prices today might not be ideal.

    Was written and directed by Richard Linklater. The second one, Before Sunset, was largely written by Julie Delpy (actress playing Celine), though 😁
    This movie was intended to stand alone. The decision to do a sequel was made later on. The second one is the nost critically acclaimed, though. And I believe it was the first film where the same amount of time passes for the characters as for the audience watching.

    The other two movies are good, but "Before Sunrise" stands head and shoulders above them. It is a beautiful movie. Hits a sweet spot in terms of love stories. There was talk about it being nominated for an Academy Award in 1995, but unfortunately, it didn't happen. Richard Linklater, who directed "Dazed and Confused," directed the film and co-wrote it with his writing partner, Kim Krizan. I have read the screenplay. It was tweaked a lot before committing it to film, apparently with the help of Hawk and Delpy. That is why it sounds so natural.

  • @VilleHalonen

    Ooh, a lovely pick! Just so you know, these movies aren't exactly a trilogy in a sense that they're a planned or a finished thing. Linklater, Hawke, and Delpy have just thus far thought that it'd be nice to follow the lives of these characters every ten years or so. I'd wager that you're gonna love the second one at least as much as this one, but I for one am glad that I'd just reached my 40s when I watched the third one lol.
    You might also dig Linklater's "Dazed and Confused" from -93; it has a similar slice of life vibe, but in high school and an ensemble cast with some very familiar faces from when they were very young!

    Thank you, Stella and Hayley! I hope we will be able to continue to watch your reactions after this -- either here or elsewhere? And meanwhile, SO glad you both reacted to this! I HIGHLY recommend BEFORE SUNSET -- it's my favorite of the trilogy. It's smarter, richer, more vulnerable, and filled with deep emotion. It's absolutely lovely, and both Hawke and Delpy co-wrote the screenplay with director Richard Linklater and were nominated for a writing Oscar for it -- and again for BEFORE MIDNIGHT (although keep in mind, that one is sort of harder to watch).

    I love your review! This film still has a 100% score on Rotten Tomatoes. When I saw “Before Sunrise” when it first came out in 1995, it felt special even then. I had no idea it would become so iconic, and I feel ecstatic about that! The same way that a song you first heard on the radio so long ago eventually became iconic…

    Wow. You are the first people to react to this movie, at least that I know of. This is such a great move that isn't well known. I hope you also react to Searching For Bobby Fischet which is also a great movie, but lesser known. And although people think it's about chess, it really isn't. Chess is just the setting for what the movie is really about. I'll leave it to you to figure out what it's about. I think this is Ethan Hawke's best film. Another one I would recommend is Sinister and most people will probably recommend Gattaca, but Gattaca has the same problem as Predestination which you think, "why am I watching the rest of this movie?".
