9 year old Blues fan left St Andrews in tears that day. What an atmosphere though.

What an atmosphere indeed - we still talk about the atmosphere at St Andrews on a number of occasions including the Play Off semi final penalty shoot out win for us. We interviewed Tommy Mooney last year and he said that atmosphere and that support was why he went to Birmingham. Good luck next season

Thank you for posting. My Dad hired a box that day, which was strange as we always used to stand on the Kop. He drank himself stupid. We had the perfect view of Barnes's goal and watched in stunned silence!

The first game I ever remember going too. I was a 7 year old Blues fan. Broke my heart. Barnes was something else that day.

Great game which John Barnes had massive influence over .

Great memories. Hope Deeney gets to play for his boyhood club. A great and fitting exit for a great player and Watford legend.

Deeney was way past it when he came to the blues unfortunately! It didn’t end well! 🤦‍♂️😳

On a binge. I was at this game, Digger was unplayable that day and avoiding the coins being thrown from the Spion Kop just translated into dancing. One of the best away performances I've seen, definitely up there with the 5-1 win at White Hart Lane - pity you can't get that footage of that game, I'm sure Spurs burnt the tape.

The 5-1 Spurs away win is one of those games that is almost lost to history because of the complete lack of footage which is such a shame. Thank you for your comments/memories on all these games as it really does add to the context and texture for people who weren’t there 👍🏼

@@youornstv4903 Yeah that 5-1, I almost didn't go but my friend convinced me as he didn't want to go alone...the days of pay on the gate! I still remember the goals, Callahan's shot on the turn, similar to his 1st against Notts County, left wing cross from Blissett for Barnes to slide it into the roof of the net and a Blissett penalty. 8,000 Watford fans in delirium at half time. Then Danny Thomas wonder volley for the best own goal I've ever seen, then Colin West intercepting a back pass to round their keeper.
      It's a sin there's no footage.

I was playing cricket that Summer in Oxford with Les Taylor playing for the opposition. No excess fat on him and a well toned athlete.

Such an under appreciated player nationally because of the lazy “Watford long ball” narrative - like so many players of the time had they been playing for Arsenal or Spurs they would have been far more lauded by the national football media

@@youornstv4903 yes indeed. An article in a newspaper referring to how Kenny Dalglish coached John Barnes and made him an England international. Truth airbrushed out of the article and replaced with taurus excretus.
