    Four well-educated guys who STILL followed their passion and became outstanding musicians. Deaky always says/said not a singer but I've thought Freddie convinced him he could and he did...at times. Those four guys cared about each other...encouraged one another thus Queen is special. Deaky's extensive bass solo was new to me also and nice!

    I love this song, though personally I love the live at the rainbow rendition best. Regarding the subject, before Freddie went to boarding school, his first school years were at a place taught by angelical nuns, and his family practiced Zoroastrianism. So I imagine the song's subject is possibly him dealing with spiritual crisis, especially having to go to confession. At least that's how I see it.

    These were the 70's darling, guys had long hair and most probably your dad too. I had never seen this version which is very good but I prefer the rainbow one. I have read the commentary and I think you got your answer there also like your dad said we all have been betrayed once and not believed. I love how Deaky took his place in this song, his riff were just amazing and he does not have the credit he deserves. Freddie looked like a black panther grrrrr so sexy. Anyway thanks for showing the not so well known song, you should try The prophet's song (album version) Written by Brian, very underrated song but a masterpiece nonetheless.

    The meaning of this song seems clear to me. It is about feeling guilt about breaking the moral teaching he got from his parents. He confesses he has "stolen many times and raised his voice in anger though he knows he never should". He begs forgiveness from his father and help from him to lead him "in the right way". He promises his mother he will "try to behave" and that he will serve her and love her until her dying day. But he feels anger that nobody believes he is sincere. I don 't see how it could be any clearer. This song is one of my favorites. The Live at the Rainbow is a better performance and a much better recording.

    Nice reaction! I love this version of the song. This song is about judgement. It is someone confessing to a priest and to society for absolution. He tries everything in his power to win people over but they always bring him down. The last line is "they bring you down before you begin", you are always being judged by someone. Freddie wrote this song very early in his career, his parents didn't want him to be a musician. He had to leave home and struggle to make a living. I think the songs taps into that judgement, where people think you might not be good enough to make it, and nobody believes in you.

  • @kathyabramowitz5110
    @kathyabramowitz5110 4 ปีที่แล้ว +7

    Wow - did this song ever undergo some changes through the years! Freddie actually wrote this before Queen was formed, and in a very early video (Freddie is wearing white), we can see traces of the way he originally meant it: An adolescent boy is seducing an older man (priest? teacher? In interviews, Freddie talked about teachers in his school being hot for him and according to a couple of his schoolmates, he was in a liaison with an adult staff member at the school. We know he was "sent down" from school when he was 15, not allowed to return). And suddenly, in the song, he is caught in the game. (Liar! Liar! Liar!) He cries out "Ohhh nobody believes me!" and goes running to his mother, saying, "Mother, I'm doing to try to behave. Mother, I'm going to get down on my knees and pray with you all day long, I'm gonna pray all day long, I'm gonna pray all day long." We know that even in his late 20s, his mother still was able to reduce him to tears by asking him, "You're not up to your old tricks again, are you?" - meaning engaging in sexual activity with men. So - that's where the song started. By the time this video was produced, Queen were wearing fancy costumes and Freddie was getting his body hair styled and trimmed (ha! in real life, he was like a little brown bear). The song itself is practically meaningless and has become a vehicle for John to showcase his bass skills.

    • @kathyabramowitz5110
      @kathyabramowitz5110 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@yvrkid7070 Yes - he failed his O levels. In the spring of his final year at that school, he very suddenly stopped going to class. And in a bio written by David Evans, he relates the story about the conversation between Freddie and his mother, as told to him by David Minn, who was probably Freddie's first adult male lover. Minn thought Freddie's meltdown after a visit to his parents was a promise Freddie had made to his mother years before that he would not get involved with guys again. Of course we are only speculating that some crisis at Freddie's school precipitated his sudden withdrawal from classes. But if we listen carefully to the words in the Liar, we are left with the chilling thought that the passage in the song where he promises his mother something on his knees is directly related to whatever happened to him at school.
      You are absolutely right that Freddie never came out to his parents and lied through his teeth to them about his love life.

    In 1984, Queen released the album “The Works”. On that Album Queen recorded a Christmas song, “Thank God it’s Christmas”. To my disbelief, I could never understand why I NEVER HEARD it during the Christmas/Holiday Season, right up there with “Grandma Got Ran Over by a Reindeer”, REALLY?!?!
    Anyway, it’s well known that Freddie’s most loved Holiday was Christmas. Ironically, in November 1991, one month before Christmas, he died from complications from AIDS.
    In the song “Thank God it’s Christmas” Freddie sings about how happy he was able to celebrate Christmas:
    Partial Lyrics:
    Thank God it's Christmas!
    For.
    One.
    Night.
    Can it be Christmas?
    Let it be Christmas
    Every day!
    I’m not the type to do this, but due to my EXTREME PASSION FOR QUEEN, I’m sending this comment to ALL MY NEWEST QUEEN FANS I HAVE SUBSCRIBED TO. Especially the ones that HAVE RECENTLY BEGUN REACTING TO QUEEN.
    This is my suggestion, since Christmas is right around the corner, I would appreciate it if Queen Fans, New and Old, make Queen’s “Thank God it’s Christmas “THE CHRISTMAS SONG OF 2019”, although it is 35 years of not being recognized.
    Please consider and spread the word.

      This was Freddie’s early, undamaged voice, but after the point when Roger used to be concerned about Freddie’s style (his irregular vibrato threw Roger off a bit at first).
      Freddie was definitely a natural baritone, but with the blessing of a huge range and unmatched expressiveness.
      I started listening to Queen pretty early on (“Killer Queen” was released to massive radio play when I was 8, followed by “Bohemian Rhapsody” the following year)...and then we (in the USA) started to hear early-catalogue stuff when we looked further into the band.
