I’m a little confused about some of your ranking, particularly 2014 vs shin. You complained that 2014 did not show enough of the monster and centered too much on the characters but the monster screen time is comparable to shin who also focused on the characters first and Godzilla 2nd. 2014, shin and minus 1 IMHO are the best because they tell the story of the people caught in a catastrophe. This is not far off from other great Kaju movies like Cloverfield. Another reason why the Transformer movies started to decline because they focused less on the humans and more on the robots. I guess there’s a movie for everyone’s taste.
it's less the amount of screen time and more what occurs in it. shin gave me the action that i was looking for when he was onscreen, 2014 cut away before the action began. and then the other aspect is the human characters. i was interested in the human stuff in shin, but wasn't in the human characters of 2014. i'm certainly not opposed to a greater focus on the humans, as evidenced by Minus 1, but that material has to be strong, and if it's not, then i want more monster mash.
I think GMK is the best Godzilla had looked for a long time, and maybe even in to the current era. The film.....plotwise, at least.....well...it was ok. Purely a visual feast for me

Only 12? Honestly... not enough. You kinda went too in-depth in, and thus missed some of the most important movies in the franchise, LIKE GMK. GMK is one of the only movies ever made in Japan that admits the war crimes Japan committed in WWII, even if it doesn't go into specifics, and in that respect is incredibly important.

Great show. Love me some Godzilla. My personal favorite is Godzilla 1985. Just the return of the seriousness of the films and Godzilla being bad again made it great. Also it was my first Godzilla movie to see so nostalgia always helps.
Saw Godzilla 1998 with my I 12 at the time it was not my favorite movie but did own it on VHS and DVD now just Blu Ray I would have to rank it in 8th place just my opinion
Godzilla King of the monsters put me off watching any more monsterverse films, I hated it, it was soooo booooring, great effects and a couple of good scenes but man was it slow. I've not watched a single one since lol The one I enjoyed the most was Kong Skull Island, that was fun, I didn't mind the first Godzilla, even though that was a bit too long and plodding, but King of the monsters pushed me away, it's one of the worse cinema experiences I've had, my arse hurt like hell and I spent half the film shuffling around and looking at my watch, it seemed to never end, I enjoyed my popcorn more than I did the film 🤣.

I have no problem with this list it's a great list I might change a couple of them from here to there but number 12 is perfect and rest are in pretty much the order they should be with one and two again neck and neck I love both versions but I have to agree with this list.
You do a really good job there at the end laying out the difference between the better made film and that one that works more for you. I'm pretty much in the same spot with the top two, I understand that the original isn't as well crafted as Minus-1 or Shin but it's version of the big guy is still that one that sticks with me.
A kong dead last would be great for latter this year as it be nice to have the new movie and the 2 Godzilla movies to judge it as a kong movie and to fill out the list
DL should be Final Wars. Garbage movie! I think they gave five-year olds some action figures and Godzilla toys, watched what they did with them, and the used those interactions for the basis of the movie.
Let’s be honest, it’s easy to claim “cinema has always had political commentary ect…” but pretentious strawmannirg and movies that think their deep when they their actually quite shallow but is “saying something important” is what annoys people. The integration of the commentary into the plot and making us actually feel for the characters and/or actually making the bad guy the worst aspect of a given group rather than a simple strawman in shill obvious propaganda allows us to enjoy the movie. Or the filmmakers story allows us to see the good parts of humanity. Robocop works because Omnicrop doesn’t need to be a real company or you assume corporations are bad to enjoy the movie since it works as a fun action movie and we know people with power make hood bad guys without buying entirely what the filmmakers want us to think. Also doesn’t help with current tribalism it doesn’t help when the filmmaker insults possible fans to their work or breaks their hand by tapping themselves on the back in and out of the film turning people off who generally just want to see someone kick some alien butt like oh say Ridley from alien
i disagree strongly, and it's because of this "current tribalism" that i believe you see it differently. the "messages" and commentary of today's movies are no more or less integrated into the plot than they used to be. however, certain online reactionaries amplify those messages and pretend that that's all that there is to the movies and scream and shout about it. things like Robocop worked for you because you were younger and were less aware of the real life similarities to the social issues of the times, combined with the lack of internet pundits shouting about how overt it all was. and i very very much disagree about people wanting to see things like Ripley. if Alien or Aliens were made today, Ripley would be torn apart as a woke mary sue who is trying to push an agenda.
I knew I was going to be off from the norm, but I was way off. I had a feeling Manhattan Zilla would be DL, but I like it. I didn’t expect Final Wars to be that low though. I had it at #1 because it has everything I want in a GZ movie. The only reason I had the original in DL is because it’s just too sad for me. I can’t have fun watching it. It would be like watching a monster movie that’s a metaphor for 9/11. I agree it’s a great movie, & the seen with the family in the burning building is powerful. It’s just not my cup of tea.

I've always ranked the Monsterverse films and the Toho films in a separate list, since they both take place in different universes, and I don't count 1998's TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA IGUANA in any GODZILLA ranking because it's NOT a GODZILLA film, no matter what Sony wants to believe.
Just Zilla, they removed the god. He is cannon in the Toho verse though. It's a joke, the worst cgi possible and when matched up with Goji Zilla got tail slapped and one shot by atomic breath as an extra middle finger to Sony. 😂😂
My dead last would be Godzilla 2000. I think Godzilla 1998 is an overall better monster film (but a bad Godzilla film) and even though Godzilla 2000 was the first one I seen in theaters, after all these years it’s one of the most forgettable. No body forgets about Godzilla 1998 for better or for worse lmao.

So I belive sticking to action, Comedy and monster flicks, which are technically horror but since monsters are not real let's say scifi. That is where you shine cause I feel like you prefer those, just an opinion.
