I think the villagers are part of the Wind Fish's regular dream, where they dont even know they're not real. But the Nightmares somehow infiltrated one of his normal dreams and now prevent the Wind Fish from waking up. Since the villagers are part of the Wind Fish's subconscious, they help Link out, and Link does not tell them the true nature of his quest once he has found out.

While Nintendo's current timeline stance is what you stated, that Link leaves Hyrule after LttP and that leads into LA., the original version of Hyrule Historia has the Oracle games between the two. That makes a lot more sense to me. Link beats Gannon, gets summoned away to Labrynna/Holodrum to prevent Twinrova from reviving him, then sets sail for home and gets caught in the Wind Fish's dream.

If you thought the Dungeon 6 music in this game was a Banger, wait til you hear the Switch Remake's version of it!
They dialed the feeling of dread & hopelessness up to 11 with the Remaster of the song. It's literally one of the best Zelda music tracks I've ever heard!

This was so heavy to me as a kid and i couldn’t understand why!!! But i thought the song was a masterpiece for that level and reading that inscription basically saying if he continued on his quest he could erase that whole islands reality!!! Was so deep to me as a kid. I thought of all the characters/animals just going through their lives in the villages and living in a dream. Made me sad for them knowing link had to wake up the Wind fish ..But that song perfectly captured the essence of that whole moment while reading that scripture…Such a great game !!

You asked why Link didn't tell the townsfolk. My interpretation is that he can't bring himself to. Imagine having to tell somebody that they aren't actually real, and that your plan is to effectively kill them. Then do this for all the rest of the town, especially Marin. I could never bring myself to do that, I'd be crying so hard and they would think I was bonkers (at best) or homicidal (at worst). Imagine how they would respond. Would they accept their fate, or would they respond the same way that the Nightmares are?

You might understand the quest line a bit better knowing that we didn't have Internet in the early 90s. I mean, it existed, but it was just a novelty that only a few had. When I was bored, I actually just roamed around Koholint just killing things and exploring. Having a quest line gave something to search for and wondering what you'd get from it.
The slabs in the dungeon originally on had one message. That's all you got. There was no owl to tell you to smash a pot on the chest. You had to figure that out on your own. I did get stuck at times. I imagine the slabs became talking owl statues so different statues could have different messages.
I wish they didn't repeat messages like when you ran into those things I thought were crystals but were inflated barriers? Weird. You also don't need to be reminded what the compass does in every dungeon.

21:35 They're far from useless, because there are actually more seashells available than the player needs to unlock the second level sword. This means a savvy player can get their level 2 sword much earlier. IIRC, the earliest you can get it is just before entering level 5. I remember getting it when I was most of the way into level 7 my first time playing through the game.
22:00 Yeah, it seems random and wacky, but from what I learned many years after playing Link's Awakening, Richard and his scenario are all a direct reference to another Nintendo game that was in vogue around the same time in Japan. (I don't remember specifically which one off the top of my head)

48:09 The boomerang is hands-down the most powerful weapon in Link's Awakening; outpacing even the O.G. hookshot vs the few things it's effective against for damage. Oh, and that includes the final form of the final boss too, negating the need for the Bow and Arrows in that fight entirely.

2:43 Is the part where you revealed how little of the story from the NES games you know. "Who knows what might arise from Ganon's ashes?" Is meant to be taken VERY LITTERALLY. The backstory to Zelda 2, adventure of Link was that if the boy who killed Ganon's blood was spread over the ashes of the now dead king of darkness, HE WOULD REVIVE. It says so in a seizure-inducing nightmare screen EVERY TIME YOU GAMEOVERED on that game.

Most complaints about the owl statues are unique to the owl statues... in the original there were way less stone slabs, exactly one each dungeon, and the hints on the slabs were much more cryptic so You had to actually think instead of being told the solution right away. Imagine playing the dungeons with no owl statues and just one cryptic hint about one puzzle. That is how it was intended until they dumbed it down. I.e.: instead of "kill the bunny first, then the bat, then the knight" it is something like "the eared one has to go as first, the winged one not as last" or similar.

Consider that in the original version you had to find stone slabs to get the hints that in future versions are freely given by the owl statues. I think that a few of your criticisms (valid ones, mind you) relating to them could be explained (not excused) by that. Most specifically, the chest that you need to unlock by throwing a jar at it; if you didn't get the optional stone slab, you wouldn't have it spelled out for you so quickly.
Thanks for the fresh look at my favourite Zelda game! I played it as a child in the 90's, have a tattoo of the heart piece from the screen left of Crazy Tracy's house, and I'm just so pleased that it's still being played and enjoyed to this day let alone reviewed and recommended!

Oh yes, I remember Dungeon 7 being REALLY tough for me as a young kid. Took me a while to figure out how to get through it, but it was VERY satisfying when I finally did! And then Dungeon 8, ho boy! Same story. What a massive dungeon that was!
It's really impressive how ahead of it's time this game was. It's amazingly designed, it really is. It's just plain fun & I like the fact that it has some challenge too. Unfortunately they made the Remake on the Switch WAY too easy... It feels near impossible to die in that game. Even Hard Mode where you don't find any hearts anywhere is still VERY easy.

I was just used to figuring things out as i went, like i built all my own bikes piece by piece as i came across them. I did a few trades with people until i got this BB gun, and then i traded that for a gameboy. I have such fond memories of playing this too, the original non colorized version, still holds up as a favorite of mine to this day. I remember going on the Washington DC Trip in middle school, i played this on the bus, replayed it every few years after that too.

Links awakening is one of the titles that gameboy colors had custom color pallet sets hard coded into it so if you play the original on a GBC it's not monochromatic.
One of the biggest improvements from alttp was the unique dungeon music, like they knew the dungeon music in the previous installment was repetitive, yet they went and put the annoying af power boost music in it. I also actively avoid the power and acorn unless i know im approaching the dungeon boss.
The magnifying lens also gives you access to the op af boomerang
You should definitely try to do the colour dungeon as early as possible so you can get that early defense or power upgrade. I generally prefer the blue tunic, since there is already a sword upgrade available, however, the red tunic does stack with the L2 sword, effectively quadrupling your damage.

I don't know why you had so much trouble with the Armos Knight (the Face Key guardian) and Blaino (the boxer) , you can defeat them fairly easy with the sword spin attack, in fact in Link's Awakening you can combine this attack with the Roc's feather to do a jumping spin attack and it is a bit overpowered because while you are in the air, enemies can not hurt you but the spin attack does hurt them. I think the devs realized of this because you can not do that anymore in Oracle of Seasons or Oracle of Ages, you can do a jumping spinning attack but you can not damage enemies while in the air.

I had this game as a Kid and never beat it. I think i might have gotten to the third dungeon and thats about it. All I did was wander and kill things. I don't really remember much else lol. I may have gotten further, but i surely didn't beat it. Although the game had the Owl and telephone as guides, i just couldn't put it all together back then. The map isn't as good as it was in Alttp either and im guessing thats because it was on the GBC.
Although I didn't beat it, it holds a special place in my heart because it was my first Zelda I owned and played. My now passed Father bought the GBC and this game for me too so anytime i think about it, it reminds me of him and my childhood and getting some tips from an older friend I knew on the playground.
It also still has some of that old school difficulty and design since its only the 4th game in the series, but it's still more accessible than say the Zeldas on the NES. I love the old retro music and themes the game has, and im glad they remade it for the Switch so others can experience this gem. :)

I think they removed the cucco killing because you can't do it in every other game due to the easter egg.
The franchise has no problem with animal cruelty, given you can kill animals in Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom for meat and resources.
And you can even kill your horse, with it just lying there when it goes down instead of disappearing like other animals.

Effectively - The villagers would have no idea they were in a dream because they are part of the dream and can only exist as part of the Wind Fish's imagination.
The Nightmare however, came in to the Wind Fish and are an outside force, so they have some relative autonomy.
I love Link's Awakening and on top of being a decent standalone game, it also worked as a template for the Oracle games which upped the puzzles significantly. I also really, really enjoy that all the dungeons are arranged to create the thing they're named for because that was very, very clever.

10:52 Easy; Super Mario Bros 3. At the time of the original Link's Awakening release (on the GB Brick), SMB3 was not only Nintendo's best selling game, but the best selling video game of all time, where Mario would eat mushrooms to power up, and introduced not one, but two different Raccoon transformations.
Tarin's resemblance to Mario was not accidental, nor will it be again when he, Marin, and his oddly-evil Luigi-esque associate Ingo return in Ocarina of Time as the caretakers of Lon Lon Ranch.
EDIT: You later make the Tarin-Mario connection, so it's kinda suprising that you didn't pick up on the raccoon/tanuki-Mario reference.

Lol I see you recorded this in 30FPS for some reason, based on the ending credit scroll & some letters not being visible. You ought to record 60FPS games in actual 60FPS. Just saying.

Link's Awakening was my first zelda game, so it gets a special place in my heart. I really like the game and feel like people don't talk about it enough.

Lol dude, it's a Gameboy game, a system with a very simple synthesizer chip for audio. Am sure they did the best they could. I actually love the soundtrack to this game! Even though the Dungeon melodies are simple, they are VERY memorable, & I love the fact that there's a different one for each & every dungeon! It gives each Dungeon it's own feel.

Lol well obviously Marin & the villagers don't even know they're in a Dream world, so why would they stop him from doing something they have no knowledge of? Even Link doesn't really know what's going on. The game merely hints at it. It isn't til you beat the game that you realize it was all a Dream.

Now that I'm an older gamer, I honestly can't stand the whole Silent Protagonist thing. I mean I get why it was a thing back when game consoles had hardware limitations & such, but nowadays when we can have fully voiced characters & overarching stories, I don't see the need for it. It feels like an outdated concept that needs to go away. There's no reason we can't still self insert ourselves into a game character if they have a voice & personality inside of the game.

Ok. I have to say it. Because i do enjoy your videos on these Zelda playthroughs and id like to see you do better with yoru channel. So here goes...
This is going to be a long post. But try to stick with me until the end please.
You need to not be so monotone during your lines. Therea virtually no tone shifts until the very ejdnof each sentence (or two) where your inflection goes up. Did you write every line in your voiceover script to be a question? Im being a little harsh but it's only to make a point. Watch a channel like Game Theory or even The Completionist. They never just blandly read their lines. They always convey emotion and have feeling behind their words. Im not saying you need to be a theatrical display with every line. But you're putting your own thoughts and opinions about these games out there. Put some heart and soul behind your words too. This is YOUR statement on these games. Have some conviction when you're expreasing yourself. If this is the style you want then by all means keep at it. But youd gather far more of a following you only slightly improve in this one regard. Just saying. Again. I had to be a little harsh to get my point across. I have still watched most of the videos like this on your channel and will probably continue to do so. But it would be awesome to see you improve your style as you continue on. Rather than just coast by doing the monotone readings. Even if it was truly monotone that would almost be better. But every sentence seems to end with that slight tone shift that usually happens when asking a question. You shouldn't be asking us anything in your own review of a game. I mean ask stuff like "what do you think" and yeah thats a question. But not "I recently played the legend of zelda [link's awakening]" (where the brackets are said in a higher tone than the rest). Why are you asking US what you played for the video? Justva minor nitpick. Again. If you were to fix that then you'd have a lot more people actually listening to what you say because just the words you are saying would have more confidence to them. Another TH-camr to check out for an example of this is Zeltik. All 3 of the creators ive mentioned are great at doing their audio lines in their videos. They are great examples of good audio recording. Truly listen to your recordings and theirs side by side. You might be able to see what um talking about. It's hard to dissect one's own voice. It either always sounds weird or always sounds right (even when it's not). Again. I am not saying the content of your videos is bad. Far from it. I think you have a lot of potential. Just please at least consider this one small tweak to your process. I've noticed this in other videos too but didn't have the time in the moment to give this thorough of an explanation and didnt want my words to be overly harsh but rather more constructive in nature. So i had to be thorough in how i brought it up. Hopefully this helps. If not I tried. Either way. Best of luck to you in the future.

@@Okapi540 I had more of an issue with it in other videos. Toward the end of this one when he started getting more into what he was saying, it got a lot better. Idk. Maybe it's just me. But I don't like the vibe of someone reading from a page. It makes the whole thing sound disingenuous and just fake all around. Just has a boring vibe to it as well. But if you can feel that the person is truly caring about what they are saying then you get drawn in more. I know creators often script out a lot of their stuff to keep it within certain times for editing purposes. But when it literally sounds like someone just reading off of a page it feels like being back in grade school and reading aloud to the class. At the very least it should feel like a table read for actors in a movie or show. There should be at least a LITTLE bit of emotion behind your words. At least SOME of the time. But a lot of times (especially in the beginnings of these videos so far) it's very dry. Which is fine. Like I said if that's the vibe he's going for then my critique is irrelevant. But personally that's the only real flaw I see in these videos. I love that he tackles them with minimal knowledge so he's getting as fresh a take as he can get. I like the general glow of the videos. Very thorough too. Covered every dungeon thus go around. I liked that. He's got a lot of potential. I was just offering some advice on how to improve a bit. But again. That's if the monotone was NOT intentional. If it was. Then nothing I say about it even matters. Although if going for monotone then the upward inflection at the end of the lines should be leveled out. Because I was noticing it sounds like he's asking a question every time he says something. It's a syntax thing. The tone changes everything about the statement being made. Anyway that's all I got. I'm glad folks do like his work as is. I hope this guy grows his channel to what he wants it to be. I'm definitely interested to see the journey unfold myself too
