Welcome to another Mortal Kombat 11 video!
Into todays 'History of' video I wanted to celebrate the DLC release of Shang Tsung! And what a better way of doing then remastering an old video of mine to get you all up to date with what exactl has been going on with the soccerer within Mortal Kombat 11!
Now this idea/rule will also be applied to each of the upcoming DLC characters within the Kombat Pack so definitely expect a 'History Of Nightwolf' and 'History Of Sindel' In the future!
With guest characters on the horizon I wont be giving them full blown background breakdown but I will be doing something special for each of them!
Hopefully you enjoy this video and come away learning more! Its been a long while since Ive put one of these together but I wanted to take my time and make sure that when I put It out that It'd be how I imagined it!
Anyway what are your thoughts on the villianous Shang Tsung? Hes always been an iconic bad guy within the series and In MK11 they really solidify this by having a nice call to the original MK movie by including Cary Tagawa!

Well technically, it was held in Outworld so Kahn could have the advantage, as going into another Realm that he hadn't merged with Outworld weakens him just like Raiden leaving Earthrealm also weakens him. Plus, the real idea was an all-or-nothing rematch.
Winged BluJ the idea that raiden leaving earth realm affecting his powers was only for nether realm and if he stayed there too long he would lose them. This was retconed anyway and the reason they held the next tournament in outworld (in both timelines) was to make the custom rule that if outworld wins, they would merge earthrealm immediately, but if they lost they could never try take earthrealm again. Obviously the answer was no, but changed it to a yes because the tarkatans had attacked the Shaolin monastery kidnapping Sonya blade and Kano to bait them into going.

Not exactly "decades" as you mentioned after the Great Kung Lao's defeat, but centuries. Shang Tsung and Goro held Outworld's winning streak for over 500 years until Liu Kang won.
If you want to get technical centuries can still be described by decades, though thats being picky.
Wrong it went on for 9 tournaments till lui kang beat them and theres a tournament every 50 years so 50X9 is 450 years

He gives the best history of all the characters but the only thing I didn’t like is the fact how he showed Armageddon during Deception but everything else I liked about the video but my favorite Shang Tsung will always be the original timeline especially in the 3D games he looks like the first Shrek villain and he isn’t more villainous than the MK9 version in complete motives

I took from mk11 that his spirit retreated to haunt his island in the Krypt and it’s my personal headcanon that he’s only being so helpful to the delver of the krypt because he intends to possess him and revive himself once he has collected all the powers and items strewn around the island.

If you play a Shang Tsung vs Shang Tsung mirror match, you learn that he has a twin brother named Shang Lao.
Fun Fact: Shang Lao was what Ed and John were originally going to name the villain of the first MK game

Shang Tsung is really the main bad guy in the whole Mortal Kombat series if you think about it
Shang Tsung is still at the bottom. He cannot win his own fights & normally needs help from someone else to suceed. Whenever he does go 1 on 1 he gets demolished as evidenced by the fact hes been defeated and/or outsmarted by Lui Kang, Quan Chi, Shao Kahn, Raiden, Kitana, Kenshi, Bo Rai Cho, and The elder Kung Lao, but is too spiteful and prideful to see his own shortcomings and actually train.

Fact: The face mocap was done by Cary Hiroyuki Tagawa, the original Shang Tsung actor in MK movie.
I think he's hands down the best villain of the series. Cunning, manipulative and often completely unapologetic about himself.
has anyone ever actually explained HOW Shang Tsung cheated in Mortal Kombat? We are in a universe where you can punch and/or kick dicks, use weapons and super powers etc so what could he have possibly done lol
He likely attempted to attack an outworld contestant outside of a structured fight which is against the rules.
Suniface, I agree. He did it in MK remaster, I watched the Mortal Kombat movie and he has a habit of fighting outside of a match, which Raiden chastises him repeatedly for.

Cary-Hiroyuki Tagawa was awesome once again just as he was in the movie as Shang Tsung.

As slimy of a character as he is, Shang Tsung’s voice and mocap actor just brings this charisma to the role that I can’t help but appreciate. Even when he says something dark or twisted, I’m just here like *the delivery though*

Am I the only one who likes the original timeline more? Mostly because mileena was raised with kitana it didn’t make sense to me that shoa Kahn would wait that long to make her
No, you are not alone. There's at least two of us. The original timeline, while not done well in its original execution (Compared to what it could have been, in my opinion), is still vastly better than the current timeline. What we need is the execution of the new timeline, and the story of the old one. The new timeline comes off as another studio hating the PS2 era of MK (Most like for its gameplay and then just hating everything else), thinking they can do better, and then realizing after the fact that it's not easy and they suck at it. For starters, they just completely disregarded Onaga carrying Shao Kahn off the pyramid, as if Shao Kahn could ever take Onaga head on, which he can't. Which is why he had to poison Onaga. Then, they look for shock value in killing Liu Kang, but the story mode is so flawed that everybody is just beating everybody, breaking all unspoken power structure, and ending up with Johnny Cage being Bruce LeRoy for Halloween against Shinnok, so that Cassie Cage could then lead the new cast of characters and be Bruce LeRoy against Shinnok. One of the few things they actually did right was properly portray Sindel as a bad-ass in MK9....... ONLY TO TURN HER INTO A GOLD DIGGER IN MK11. They failed so badly that, three games in, they've already reset the timeline again and went back to before the Great Kung Lao defeated Shang Tsung.. it's clear as all hell that the further they pulled away from the original timeline, the worse the story got.
Am I the only one who would love a "classic" mk prequel game with Shang tsung, o.g. Kung lao, and goro??

In MK11, it is illustrated that in the MK universe, time is linear, binding everyone from mortals all the way up to the Elder Gods, with only Kronika being outside of it. This would mean that when we speak of different timelines, it should not be understood that those timelines actually exist as alternate realities as they do in, say, the Terminator series. Only the current timeline, with all of its changes and alterations, exists. What Raiden sees in MK9 and MK11 are not glimpses into alternate realities, but shadows of things that would have been.
Thus, it falls to reasons that where the timelines share a common past--everything up until the moment Raiden received the message from himself in MK9--there can be no differences up to that point. Therefore, the original timeline has received retcons. It is no longer canon that Kitana and Mileena grew up together, but the only possibility is that Mileena was created at the time she was in MK9 in all timelines. The only differences, perhaps, may be that in the original timeline, Kitana is introduced to Mileena at a different time during the Outworld tournament, not having discovered the latter during her initial awakening in the flesh pits. Shao Kahn probably introduced Mileena as Kitana's long-lost sister in the original timeline (since, as I said, their mutual childhoods can no longer be canon), whereas in MK9 she discovers her at a time when she was not supposed to.

I just want to say how awesome it is they used Cary-Hiroyuki Tagawa’s(the original Shang Tsing from the ‘95 Mortal Kombat movie) face. He’ll always be Shang Tsung to me when I imagine the character. #MortalKombatMovie(05-05-21)
If I remember correctly, Shujinko didn't decline his invitation to the tournament. He had every intention to, but Damashi (Onaga) forced him to complete his quest for the Kamidogu.

So a bit of conflicting lore here: Bo Rai Cho can't compete on behalf of earthrelm because he was born in outworld, but Shang Tsung can fight on behalf of Outworld despite being from earthrelm?

Yeah, judging by Shang Tsung dialogues in MK11 he's the Rebooted timeline Shang Tsung, He knew what Shao Khan did to him in MK9. Kronika should have brought back young Shang, not the MK1 one. But who knows, MK11 is filled with plotholes anyway.

I can summarize it easy peezy spawn was a FBI officer who on a mission was betrayed and sent to hell and he got a second chance at life but as a hell spawn with powers hence the name Spawn

I find it funny that Shujinko is the character's name, and that name is usually used in Japanese to refer to the main protagonist of a game or story. It's not really meant to be a name on and off itself. It's like if his name was 'Hero'.

Kermit da froog have you seen the ending, because in pre fight dialogue with kitana shang tells her that he did kill ermac and take all hus souls including jerrods which had been confirmed to be of ermac in his mk9 ending and in his mkx ending ermac gets killed by shang so i would say that both of the endings for ermac are canon

Can you talk about how in MK11 there’s tons of Onaga references and that he may come back in MK12. From intro dialogue, gear that has the name of “Dragon King” and “Onaga”. Also the Krypt has the one being items, the original Kamidogu’s and Onaga items.

The retcon of Kitana and Mileena no longer growing up as sisters was very disappointing.
Also, as Raiden mentions after the time warp, the time warp occurs just after Kung Lao defeats Shang Tsung and Quan Chi. So Shang was still alive when the time warp happened. This makes me wonder how Sindel will come into play, as she had not yet been resurrected at that time.
Seeing shang tsung with a rpg is so funny
With the story explained i personally understand the story thoroughly to each installment was a sequel, prequel or a different timeline in itself. And mk11 was good at telling the story but aftermath made it especially easier to follow through. I personally stopped playing at mk9 and switched to tekken (is a better fight game) but mortal Kombat is a way better story .
What about that dialogue from MK11 straight up telling us Shang Tsung had a brother all this Time

It's an Easter egg, he was supposed to be named shang lao but they changed it at the end
They really showed off his fighting skills in Aftermath. I like how they "nerfed" him in canon by having the earthrealm warriors know he'll betray them, instead of being nieve and getting caught off guard. You'd have to be an idiot or desperate to trust him.

One minor correction. For the MK III part you said Shao Khan returned to Earthrealm instead of Outworld to torture Shang Tsung, but like I said it's a minor error and rare for your videos.

So Shang Tsung and Erron Black can fight on the side of Outworld, but Bo Rai Cho can't fight on the side of Earthrealm? Those are some plot holes I would love for them to explain.
MK lore will never be remembered as the flawless storyline ever made...
U did mentioned the assistance of Quan Chi... U forgot to mention however that, it was the product of a deal... Quan Chi provided the necessary sorcery and assistance to Shang Tsung, in exchange for the location of the Temple of the Elements... the information QC needed to start the plot of MK Mythologies...
Other than that, great video as always, thank U for educating other on the events of MK... the best saga when it comes to lore in fighting games

What got me 100% about Mortal Kombat was how it was a exact depiction of corruption in all it's perversity. Effectively a sociology, criminal psychology & civil court college level education including machine operations & maintenance. 🤸

In my opinion, I think MK9 Shang Tsung is a better young version of Shang Tsung, and Cary Tagawa is a better old Shang Tsung.
Hey, can you do a video of Geras discussing about his character and/or his powers? Pretty please? He is like the most badass MK 11 villain moreso than Kronika and Cetrion.
You need to make an updated video on Shang tsung due to the MK11 Aftermath Expansion.
Shang Tsung, Quan Chi & Shinnok are my favorite villains. Shao Kahn is still the best though.

My belief is that after Sindel’s death in 9, his soul wandered around the universe searching for its original body and that between the end of X and the time quake in 11 that it had found its original body

Very nice and in-depth video! Where did you get all these informations from? Thats an honest question, because I played all MK games and a lot of the stuff you say, I can't recall seeing in there - especially anything that happens before the first game.
Aftermath completely messed with this video.
You forgot to mention Tsung's "true" form of which is a demon.
That would be an ascended form because he's a human from Earth
@@robertknoll3544 - Not per John Tobias' original drawings for the character. Shang Tsung was a shape shifting demon and took on the appearance of a human. As you can see, the demon lore was dropped and Shang Tsung merely became a human sorcerer.
