Almost always. There's been some really good guests in the past few months (Mila Kunis was a great one, esp how she interacted with Sona about being from the USSR originally and with Matt about their shared Star Trek nerdery)... but usually just the stuff with the Chill Chums themselves is best.

      I mean, yes and no.
They are both funny in their own ways but sure, the bickering Conan has with his staff has a special feel to it, it's a bit more relaxed and just plain goofy and that is always funny.
With a guest they always need to work to have the conversation flowing about a subject, the staff talks can go anywhere without direction.

as an audiologist, this whole hearing test side plot they’re doing on the podcast is really fun haha.
Also, when we do clinical testing we actually typically only test between 250-8000 Hz, so your high frequency hearing loss wouldn’t likely even be detected!

It actually would be nice if you or other audiologists can confirm the important frequencies we need. I was able to hear up to 13k but there was a drop in volume and Eduardo kinda was disorganized at the end there, unfortunately, but i never heard anything above that (and can't tell if Gourley was even editing the audio properly by that point). I discovered I kind of have a hard time hearing students in class talking, maybe they just mumble but man those are lower frequencies that kinda get muffled!

And this listening test is flawed, you don't usually get a sudden drop on all participants at the same time. edit: ok, they went from 12k to 14k, that can do it. Mine is 13.5k, i can hear 14 just about but it is practically gone. Which is good for a 50 year old sound engineer.. I wish i had not ruined that 3.5k that is screaming, day and night inside my head though.

For those wondering if their hearing has gone, keep in mind that you computer hardware may be messing with you. I stopped hearing the tones early when it was routed into my USB-attached headphones. So I switched over to my high-ish quality studio monitor style speakers and I could hear the rest of the tones just fine (even the highest one they couldn't hear which surprised me as I'm a little older than Matt). I dug into the settings for my audio devices, and the sound device for my headphones tops out at 16 kHz (which tracks with where I stopped hearing the tones initially), but my higher quality sound device is set to 48kHz, which allowed me to hear the higher frequency tones they played.

It seems as though there was a misunderstanding the first time they did it. 3:10 At 12000Hz they didn’t verbalize to Eduardo that they could still hear it (even though they did at the other frequencies) but they all still could, Since they weren’t saying anything to acknowledge that they heard it, Eduardo assumed they couldn’t hear it anymore so he stopped the track.
It was only then (after Eduardo stopped the track, not before) that all 3 suddenly reacted saying that they couldn’t hear it anymore. And that’s why Sona first thought she stopped hearing it at the same time Conan and Matt said they couldn’t hear it anymore.

It's also worth noting that their studio headphones (let alone any of our car speakers or earbuds or laptop speakers, etc.) may not be designed to produce frequencies much above 12k Hz. So even if the audio system is trying to output that sound, you may not hear it because the physical properties of the speakers you're listening to aren't engineered/tuned to reproduce frequencies that high, since so little of the audio content we listen to (music and human voices) has much useful information in that range.

    • @usernaames
      @usernaames ปีที่แล้ว +3

This is incorrect. Any decent/cheap earphone/headphone can produce 20hz-20khz easily.
Now take note that Conan's podcast studio is to tier with high end cameras, mics & more importantly studio headphones which are designed for clinical, analytical listening by having a neutral frequency graph.
So if Eduardo had used a sine frequency generater website instead of a TH-cam.

If I say it's 20/20k that may be true, but to hear anything in the 20hz range, you might need the volume at max, and it may still be only 1% as loud as it should be. We're dealing with something analogue, so it's not can it or can it not, but variations and ranges of audio reproduction.
Something that markets itself as 40/15k may sound identical to something that markets itself as 2/40k because the extended range of the second is either badly or incorrectly reproduced, or so little volume it cannot be heard"

Fellow listeners,....do not fear,...most of us aren't listening to this podcast with headphones, in a room setting with zero other ambient noises. The actual hearing test is performed in a special hearing clinic setting. One sits in a semi dark room, that is isolated from any and all extraneous sounds. The room is free from external vibrations. One's house is rarely that quiet. In my case my computer has an external cooling fan that hums, I have pets, my house was built in 1910, & I live in an urban area. Unless the test is performed in absolute quietness,.....there is no way of determining if you have hearing loss or not.

Realized a few years ago I needed hearing aids. My partner was complaining about birds waking her up early in the morning. I heard nothing. Got hearing aids at 50 and wow was I missing A LOT! Didn't have them in while watching this (just laptop speakers). Lost the tone at the 4th change but came back barely on the 5th change. Nothing after that. But my dog was getting pissed off by this point so I stopped lol.

The sociological, group-based factors of public opinion formation are often omitted from models of public opinion that rely on survey methodology. This study employs social identity theory and focus group interview technique to demonstrate the value-added from an alternative approach to the issue of opinion formation in authoritarian regimes.

I honestly wish I could have a conversation with Conan. Even if it was just 2 minutes . I’m 22 years old now but I started listening to him speak on different topics since I was 17 and I have learned a lot from the advice he gives to young people when he speaks at an event. I have many questions to ask this great man, and I hope one day I can run into him while he’s out at CVS buying 2% milk. Doesn’t he live in L.A? I reckon he would be easy to find since he’s the only German model walking around with a giant pastry on his head .

At age 68 I had a hearing test, just because I was curious if I was losing my hearing. I based my belief on the fact when I was in a person's house, at a party, with 20 other people all talking and music was also playing in the background, that I had trouble hearing some people who were talking to me from across the room. In this setting most of us could say we weren't able to hear everything. After my actual hearing test, in a special clinic, designed for that alone, I was told I had minor hearing loss of sounds in the lowest bass level. So very quiet whispers, in a quiet room, or tones that were low and deep, I had minor loss of hearing. On an average day, in certain quiet settings, I can hear my heart beating. (In some settings, I swear I can hear fluids coursing through my brain.)

Note a lot of cell phones and cheap speakers have really poor to no response above 10k-14k. The drivers of those speakers are really heavily biased towards midrange. Most headphones will do better. A okay set of professional/prosumer headphones will top out in the 20-25k range.
But they are right, get a professional hearing test. Especially as you get above 40 hearing will fade without you really noticing. And low levels of hearing loss can contribute to a lot of stress and fatigue in noisy situations without any understanding of why you’re experiencing those things (just as poor eyesight can cause headaches and eye strain when looking at small or busy images).

So I am an audio engineer and have been for 10 years.
If you cannot hear a frequency, instead you will hear a whooshing or air like sound, similar to what Matt was describing. That effect often happens when a specific frequency, not a range, has been lost.
Whenever you hear a loud sound and your ears rings, that is the sound of some of your hairs in your ear, tuned to that frequency, dying and that being the final time you will ever hear that frequency for the rest of your life.
Loosing a range of hearing, and then hearing a sine wave in that lost range like this video’s example, will often sound like nothing.
Over the years as an audio engineer I have tested my hearing this way in the same way with a sine wave generator. Now for 10 years still my hearing has maxed out at 17600hz. But that’s after meticulously taking care of my ears and avoiding loud sounds.

The drugs we take, both prescribed and recreationally, can affect our hearing. Certain states of mind, can also alter our hearing. During a brief period of time, about 10 years ago, I was experiencing extreme anxiety. Because of that, I felt my hearing was accentuated, I sensed I could hear the tiniest squeak, the most far away chirp, and the most subtle hum and hiss. Once calmness returned to my life, my hearing returned to normal again.

Turning up the volume could be introducing audible harmonic distortion from the headphones themselves. Not an accurate test at higher volumes! The original volume tests were more meaningful. As long as the original volume was decent, that should even account for the Fletcher-Munson curve.
