I have been seeing a therapist trained by James Masterson, who’s work centered around disorders of the self. After seven years of working with him, I am convinced that lack of a fully formed self is at the heart of most of humanities problems.

This touches on Sam Vaknin's assertion that the problem with narcissists is not that they are selfISH but rather that they are actually selfLESS in the worst possible way. I remember listening to a recorded discussion he had about this topic and he explained that if you are one of the extremely rare people who hangs onto your self in this society, you will be an outcast your whole life. Basically, most people give up their true selves at a young age due to extreme pressure from the adults around them (and social pressure from other children). In return, they get the support of society and never experience isolation and abandonment. The other people around them serve the purpose of the healthy ego that they have given up. People who don't or can't do this for whatever reason immediately become social outcasts and are on their own for their entire lives unless they can find another person who has done the same. But it is very rare that someone walks this path, the reason for that being that it is extremely difficult to live life with no social support. You can have yourself, or you can be a part of society, but not both. I believe that this is a very unnatural state of affairs that has arisen only recently in human history. I believe this is also what causes people to be miserable despite the fact that they have all of the conveniences, possessions and freedoms of modern society. I know too many who have "everything" yet they act as though their life is constant suffering. They are mourning the loss of self

It seems like I'm one of those who you're talking about (kinda irrelevant info).
But I want to say that it is possible to have a mask that interacts with society, a mask formed from the years of experience of what is and what is not allowed in your society, but deep down, when you get back home, when you're alone, you're fully back with that self.
It is a way to try to have both kind of social support and yourself.
But the risk is you might interact with that rare free soul out there with that mask and they lose interest in you.
It's tiring, but that's the work.

@@richeeg3271people have been traumatising eachother, but they always had their true selves to fall back on and heal. It’s only recently that people began destroying their own real true selves in order to submit to the society and thus no longer have any true self to fall back upon

Psychosis led me to being the watcher of my thoughts. First time in my life I was able to use my mind. There was no anxiety around others. No need to control anything. No judgment of others. It was quiet. Only lasted few days in the hospital. I believe that the underlying unresolved trauma took me out of it. Ever since then I have been in anguish and self loathing.

I have a friend who is pathologising one of her adopted daughters (4) because the child is expressing her 'self' freely and naturally. She is a lovely child but the way she 'is' does not match up to how her mum wants her to be. When I spend time with them (and the older sister who behaves 'well') I find it really difficult to see the way this child is spoken to and treated. She is now being 'assessed' and seen as 'problematic' when in actual fact she is just different. So sad because she starts school this week and she will start to be labelled in ways which will affect her sense of self (and her lovely nature) negatively. Great video as always, Daniel. Thank you. Joe. UK.

Well said, Daniel- your talk reminds me of the memoir by Jeanette Winterson titled “Why be happy when you can be normal?” - a quotation said by the author’s abusive, adoptive mother. Pretty much sums up our dysfunctional society…just keep your head down and take the hits; keep your mouth shut and stuff down your true selfs and feelings- fear the authorities, even better become those authorities and instill fear in others. It’s dog eat dog- control or be controlled. Such a sad and dangerous state of non existence/non living, non being.

Fair points. The rough part is finding therapists who care enough to let your self emerge while building up skills to cope with daily life. Many of in depth therapies seem destabilizing to a profound degrer that the strategy you've outlined is easier to live with at least in the short term.
Also this whole thing does seem to reduce many to just being parts of the unwashed masses, and perhaps rightfully so. Are the selfless people really that unhappy or is this just a reductionist cope to get back at the system and others functioning it, imperfect as it is.

Beyond the ironic standpoint, you may involuntarily have a point here! Some of us may think that a 5 year old self is the perfect representation of what we should go back to: spontaneity, liveliness, free expression of emotions, creativity... But can we?
Eastern philosophy and spirituality is all about giving in our selves; which appeals to many people who think that can solve their problem, and that is a trick too...
So what should be the answer to not having a self that fits our expectations? I discovered that there are very few therapists who know the answer...

Another way that selflessness makes parenting easier is that the selfless parent will forego their own needs in favor of their child's, resulting in better outcomes for the child. Since the end goal of parenting is to attain the best possible results for the child, selflessness aids the parent in meeting that goal. A third way that selflessness makes parenting easier is by precluding the parent's desires for their own children in cases in which "society at large" has different plans for those children (usually for the worse). The child's life may be worsened, but the parent's assessment as a parent will have been improved in their service of society's designs for their child. These are two completely contradictory visions of "advantage" but they are both coherent given different initial preferences

Yes, I would define capital 'S' Self as spirit, essence, consciousness, God, or however one chooses to express it. Small 's' self I equate to the ego, worldly experiences and mental impressions that most people erroneously accept as their true essence.

having a true self and being in touch with it makes you healthy (this is the same thing as being in touch with your inner child). most people have a false self that is something that was manufactured and given to them by their parents and society. they mistake this for their true self (which they have lost touch with) and everyone around them supports and encourages this (because they are doing it too). I think this is what Daniel means by being "selfless". He's talking about having no healthy functioning ego

@@christinebadostain6887 Yes, I would define capital 'S' _Self_ as spirit, essence, consciousness, God, or however one chooses to express it. Small 's' _self_ I equate to the ego, worldly experiences and mental impressions that most people erroneously accept as their true essence.

That's an inaccurate assumption, assessment and insult to generalize about people you don't know. You have no idea who people are and what is required of them.
I'll throw out another general assessment of people who have content on TH-cam, etc. They just want people to agree and compliment them. They do not want any discussion or differing points of view - just agreement and thanks preferably immediately. Thank you

Besides you're projecting, you feel insecure, otherwise you wouldn't care about my questionts on Daniel Mackler and desperetly try to make those questions look ridicilous, wich they are not. Yes, i watched the video and the thumbnail has practically nothing to do with the video itself, he could have just put himself in the thumbnail like he usually does, but he didn't. I think his motives are misandric.
