    We didn't get to use anything powered when taking these tests in school either. I was told if I needed to cut anything off I should turn up the amps on a 6010 and use the arc to make the cut and I actually had to do that once and it worked!

    I'm not in school for welding. I have done it in High School back in the 80's but now I'm doing it on the side at my place of employment. I'm kind of learning through trial and error. I weld on a lot of thin and rusty steel. Trying to weld overhead, vertical and horizontal is a big challenge for me. I use a Miller Bobcat 225 diesel welder and trying to dial in my amperage settings is a challenge cause the dial only has numbers from 1 to 10. It doesn't literally show me my amperage setting. However. I have learned and actually used some of Bob's methods from his older videos. It would be great to see a video on setting a basic generator/welder with just a number dial. Keep up the good work. I'll be watching for more SMAW videos.

    For my root I don’t start so far down on backing strap because I want the rod to make it past the middle part of the plate. So I try to stop at the top part of the plate and restart. Also I run slower at bottom of the plate so puddle can build up more because normally at the top of the plate the heat makes the weld come out higher

    I’m 19 in welding school right now on a scholarship, $4,000 of the $4,250 will be paid for as long as I get certified in at least one position. COVID 19 cut my school year 9 weeks short and spring break turned to summer. Now we’re back for summer classes. Long story short, I have two days left of summer school to finish my 1 inch plate 3G cert. If I fail, It’s quite possible I’ll then owe $4,000 to the school; and since there wasn’t any time for a practice certification beforehand(like there normally is here), this is my only shot. Plates are cut and grinded up pretty, just need tacking and all the passes... wish me luck.

    Really appreciate videos like this. I'll never do code work but it's very interesting how you stacked everything in your favor. Landing plate, clean metal, starting bead outside of the groove, a welder with hot start, dig function, favorite welding helmet, gloves that fit and let you move your fingers. I need to put more effort into my projects at home to make them this good.

    I'm attending Daytona State College and we're getting ready for our 1st cert in 7108 3g and 4g. I'm super nervous because this is my one chance to get a career going on this. I had to resign from my last career due to lower back complications. But since I've been in this class, my complications have been very minimal. Plus I just had a daughter 9 months ago so the thought of her is pushing me on this. My teacher believes I will pass, but it still makes me nervous.

Little undercut on the right side of that root tie in (it happens to us all). Still a good weld though. About your last comment. I have never seen a code that forbids power tools for inter pass cleaning. To be honest if you were using a chipping hammer to clean a weld but had a 110V outlet and a grinder right beside you, I think the boss might be asking what the hell you are doing.
    Yes at most schools they like to see the student pass with out power tools. At work when I am testing guys it's really not an issue. I would rather see someone identify a small mistake and correct it and pass UT/RT or a bend test. Rather than try and weld over a mistake and just hope for the best. If they get into that habbit your going to have a lot of weld repairs.

    • @GodslilRedneck23
      @GodslilRedneck23 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Geoff Moore I agree with you for in production but not for a weld test. AWS D1.5 Bridge Code prohibits power tools and grinders during welding qualification. It’s just a good practice to get into for when you don’t have the tools or can’t use them.

    • @geoffmooregm
      @geoffmooregm 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@GodslilRedneck23 Good to know. As far as I can tell they restrict tools in D1.5 because field work may have limited power so they want to know you can do without. I had to qualify my all position SMAW and FCAW plates with no power tool as well. This was a rule at the school I was doing the testing. NO GRINDING IN THE BOOTH was printed on every hallway. I could have removed the part and took it to the grinding room but there was no need and time did not permit. It was 8 test plates in one day!
      Now being an inspector myself I just tell the workers to do whatever they do at work. I'm not there to tell them how to weld I just issue the test as the code says.

    • @GodslilRedneck23
      @GodslilRedneck23 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Enjoyed it very much. How thick in mm must the backing plate be. I enjoyed the half moon or U shaped welding teqnique in vertical.is a vertical up weld better than vertical down and why is that?

    • @GodslilRedneck23
      @GodslilRedneck23 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Duncan Mac Farlane for this one I used a 6.35mm thick piece but usually run a 9.5mm. For this process being used in a structural application vertical up is better because you get better penetration. On an open root you can run up or down depending on the electrode you’re using and the code you’re working to.

    Can you do a 1' plate test like that, ive tried and never succeed well with keeping the weld flat, its always shallow on the ends, i think because i dont put enough metal on the runoff tabs

    • @GodslilRedneck23
      @GodslilRedneck23 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      patrick Flynn yes sir, I had to certify for the union on 1” plate 3G and 4G. 4G is definitely easier though. If it’s not laying flat it’s usually the run off tabs not being utilized enough. Another thing you can do is tack a couple small plates parallel with your bevel just like the run-in/run-out tabs. That’ll help keep you straight and true.

    Hi Jason, great video, can you to a video showing how to prepare the plate for bend testing, please? Do you grind off the backing plate or Carbon Arc cutting method? do you back weld after removing the backing strip?

      Eric Borgen that’s actually where I learned the part about the as fit-up and as detailed info I shared. As a welder, I did not know that. Glad I went and did the CWI course. It’s helped me a lot since I still weld.

    • @geoffmooregm
      @geoffmooregm 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@GodslilRedneck23 Basically the "As Fit Up" is the point where the CWI will make you re fit the joint. If it is within those tolerances your ok to start welding.

    I was always told that we cannot weave the cap with one bead. You had 3 stringers on your cap. Is there a spot in the code book that says you cannot weave over 4 times the diameter of the rod for a 3/8” plate test? I have been looking and cannot find it

  • @Boostoverdisplacemnt
    @Boostoverdisplacemnt 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    How long do you let your plate cool in between passes? When practicing at home, my plate was bending towards me even though I felt like i was sitting around waiting for it to cool more than i was welding.

    • @GodslilRedneck23
      @GodslilRedneck23 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Phillip Gober I usually run the root and hot pass with no wait in between. Then maybe about 2-3 mins before doing the two interpasses and about 5-7 mins before starting the cap with a 2 min wait between each stringer on the cap.

    • @kf8575
      @kf8575 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Even if you were to leave it to cool right down so you could touch it wi a bare hand between passes, it will warp or distort. Its simply physics. As things heat up they expand, and as they cool down they contract. Nothing that you can do about it other than pre-stress it

    Just a question do you or do you not discard the eans of the plate 1/2" or so? I think for the bend test but maybe not for the visual inspection? Also what about grinding out the crater where you stopped and started?

    • @GodslilRedneck23
      @GodslilRedneck23 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      RMTX 25 for a bend yes you start at the center and measure 1” either side of center, from there you measure 1-1/2” past the 1” mark. Those 1-1/2” sections are what get bent. The visual only applies to the welded plate the entire run on/run off tabs get cut off and are not inspected. You shouldn’t have any craters on your test plate. They have to be filled in to the entire cross section.

    I started school a couple weeks ago and I'm struggling with nerves. I'm pretty much just multipassing fillets in each position. On flat, which I hate, and we've got to do what you're doing in the video next and its going to be an AWS test I believe at the 280 hour point and I'm at around150 now. Like I said my nerves are fucking with me just thinking about the steps I need to take considering what I dont know, like to use the track torch or anything to do with any of it beside the weld lol any advice would be so nice! I haven't even been shown this yet. I'm hoping soon.

    I agree with not using power tools when you're learning you should be able to lay down good strong welds with normal welding tools i even don't like when coworkers and others grind the face of the weld off .. clean the scale and spatter off and show off your welds

    • @Millwrightmike
      @Millwrightmike 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      If u clean test plates at all here with a grinder anything u fail not allowed the inspectors watch you will not let you clean the weld out or down to tollerence also grinding will contaminate your weld surface and when comes to xray its noticed also.

    Hi just a quick question. I am welding my cwb vertical 3g and our plates are 90 degrees and 30 degrees. I was told to do a root stringer on both sides with stops and starts. Then all the following passes are in a weave. Is this up to the discretion of the inspector or would stringers be more widely accepted?
