    Mate! Thank you so much! I watched the entire video and you saved me from burning out all my glow plugs. So grateful. I bought a 1996 Xantia with the XUD11BTE engine and cold starts were a nightmare. I initially thought the relay was bad because i didn't have any glow plug warning light, but it did click on and off. After playing around with my multimeter and a test lamp I found that the positive feeding to the relay was bad. Where the cable from the positive terminal on the battery goes in to the fuse box (right next to the battery), the cable was burnt. Replaced it, so now I have a wire going from the battery's positive straight to the relay. Before starting the car I had the test lamp connected to the glow plugs. Ignition on and warning light on, glow plugs 10 sec. But when I started the car the glow plugs came back on and wouldn't switch off (I was able to tell from the test lamp). I counted 30 sec and glow plugs still didn't come off. So I switched the engine off not to burn them out. Now I am thinking of simply connecting an on/off relay with a push button for the wire from the battery's positive

    Bravo sir. A comprehensive explanation. Despite owning and XUD9 for 12 years then a DW8 for 17 years I've always been a bit vague about how the controllers worked. Your modification does indeed look like a much more sensible way to have to it work.

    Very helpful advice. Changed the relay and got an extra 2 seconds on the plugs. Is now a bit better. Then Managed to get the old ones out but accidently bought the wrong ones. Going to buy Bosch this time. If that doesn't work, will put in a manual button. What a great idea. Thank you

    Oh my god, the amount of detail on here is amazing. I was just looking for how to change them on a DW8 (1999 Dispatch) but thought what the hell I'll watch this through.
    Good job I did, I was surprised to see that if there's a problem they default to always being on. I tested mine and sure enough, the plugs stay on forever after starting. Which explains my poor starting, especially on SVO.
    You've saved me burning out a fresh set of glow plugs, thanks!

      You're welcome my friend. Yes, Peugeot / Citroen weren't all that clever when it comes to electronics. Glad you're able to identify the problem in your situation. They've turned what should be a simple system into something insanely complicated that makes very little sense to anyone who has to work on the system. Hope you get it sorted in the end my friend!

    • @kenbw2
      @kenbw2 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I did get it sorted, but it turned out the fault wasn't there after all.
      I was assuming because the voltage was there for a minute after starting that it was that fault, but actually on these cold mornings they stay on for a few minutes, but do cut out. I've replaced three of the four plugs and it's now flawless at starting, and is now able to handle a 50:50 SVO mix with ease.
      Unfortunately what I saw doesn't match the 15s preglow/10s post glow you describe, nor are they permanently on. Is there something a bit different there?
      Still good to know the dash light has no bearing on the plugs' feed, that definitely helped.

    my first video I've ever watched to do with mechanics! My van glow plugs are going to be replaced and wanted to understand how they worked. This video is so in depth it's great, I learned a lot from watching thanks

    Bravo sir - what a thoroughly comprehensive video.. I'll be sure to test them before I try to replace them (although I suspect they are the culprits to hard starting in the morning).

    Do you have a diagram of the in van switch wiring for glow plugs?

  • @shinedg168

    Removed my relay. For the 4 wire plug connector there are wires in slot 1,3,4,5. Which are the ground and live from these? Two of these go to the ecu. Am trying to do your mod but dont want to damage the relay. Appreciate any assistance.

  • @ste7193
    @ste7193 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Would it be possible to locate the feed from the ecu to the glowplug light and cut it, then run feed from one of the glow plugs back up the loom and connect into length wire left at the back of the light, so the light is wired directly to the glow plug feed?

    What about if the glow plug light flickers on and then off again less then a second

    My dw8 hasnt started in the cold for about 4 years .i have to resort to boiling hot water on the head.you think i have this non communication problem with the ecu?

    i have a 1999 1.9 d that refuses to start when cold would bad glow plugs stop it from starting? it will bump start and run fine but won't start off the key. thanks

    • @NickExton309
      @NickExton309  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Lee, If it bump starts fine when cold, then it's likely you have a bad starter motor. But yes, bad glow plugs will definitely cause it to not start as well, but if the glow plugs were bad, the fault should still be present when you bump start it. Does the engine turn over when it's cold? if it does, is it any slower than usual?

    • @leeaspin7799
      @leeaspin7799 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@NickExton309 ive tested the glow plug circuit and modular/relay they are all ok and working well all glow plugs dead. it starts fine when bump started but back to no start when it gose cold. ive added the none return valves and pipes replace the filter housing. and no smoke when running. even added another prime pump. still wont fire off the key. spins well and starts after instantly once its been started. all the glow plugs are dead but i didnt think they mattered when its a warm day like today. im at a loss lol just your good video made me think is it my knackered glow plugs lol thanks for your time mate

    Great video.
    I have the shit system with crap Lucas pump, ecu and the crappier glow plug relay box and the DW8 engine.
    I also have the fully mechanical bosch VE pump on another DW8 engine so considering swapping over the pump so I can have a 'Go' switch on the dash for the pump and a 'heat' switch on the dash for the glow plugs. Do you know if the ecu controls anything else on the car that might stop working if I remove the ecu entirely?

    This must be what is wrong with my 2007 Peugeot expert 1.9 , having a hell of a time trying to start it and when it does it sounds like it is only running on 1 or 2 cylinders until the rest kick in when the engine speed rises , not mechanically minded , are they easy to change out ?

    Help! Peugeot 1.9d - No glow plug light, no glow plug feed, no power to stop valve. Replaced glow plug module & still the same. Any ideas anyone?

  • @xxwookey
    @xxwookey 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Nick. It seems there is a 3rd option. I have (in my 1997 Peugeot Expert 1.9NA) a controller which looks just like your 'type2' (5=pin connector), but there is no ECU in this vehicle and it is wired directly to GND, ignition, temp sensor, lamp, starter. Or to put it another way, there exists a 5-pin version of the type 1 controller. So having a 5-pin connector does not necessarily mean that you have a system controlled by an ECU.
    I've just spent the day removing the stupid controller electronics and working out how to wire it up as a manual pushbutton (It's always annoyed me that the lamp does not actually display the glow-plug status, I've already replaced the controller once and now that one seems to have died).
    It came with the 'DB9' engine, also called XUD9AU. (I've since swapped it to put the turbo version in which has a lot more poke).
    You might also want to mention how the device is held together and how the double-flange is arranged so people can get in without destroying it. It's very hard to disassemble without significant damage.

    Hi mate I'm having a nightmare with mine it's got 12v going to the plugs without turning the key! Any ideas? I changed the plugs a couple of weeks ago I guess they are burnt out again 🤔

    • @NickExton309
      @NickExton309  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, they would burn out in a matter of minutes if they're left on continuously! - What is your engine size and what vehicle is it in? Is it the 1868cc DW8 engine? - If so, it sounds like there's a communication issue between the glow plug relay, and the engine ECU. - Let me know what engine it is, and I'll see if I can give you some more suggestions. :)

      Hi many thanks for telling all the system is realy great. Mine is the same problem with edward bradley told and sometime it is not giving 12v to glow plugs. Mine in 2004 1.9d engine (Dw8 i think). Problem with ecu conneting to glow relay? Push switch in the cabin battery to directly glow plugs. Orijinal glow plug 12v cancelled then push switch. İs the problem with ecu to glow relay or broken down glow relay etc. is seen on diognastic?
