THE STORY OF SUNDANCE MOUNTAIN RESORT

  • Over 50 years ago, Robert Redford took a simple ride up a canyon toward majestic Mount Timpanogos in Utah. That's when the story of Sundance Mountain Resort began. Since then, it’s become a window to a larger world for all those who visit. We invite you to experience that world and come away with your own story to tell.

In the early 1980's I was skiing with parents at Sundance Resort. Separated briefly from them, I had a fall. A very kind, genuinely kind man helped me up. Later I would find out it was Bob. I remember many people who just skied right by a ten year old. Thanks

I completely loved losing countless summers to Sundance as a young boy. I remember feeling quite whole in this place. I can still remember the unique smells that I had waited for all year long. The moment we parked our car at the old, small cabin at the end of Big Pine Hollow, I just got out and ran. I ran to see the streams and the big fur tree growing through our deck. I loved that we had built that cabin around the trees; not than the other way around. Now, about 30 years later, I'm looking at the resort from Google Earth and feeling quite amazed at how small it still looks. Sundance, after all these years, kept that balance between allowing a few to live there while keeping the original, wild nature of the valley. Absolutely amazing!

I moved to Utah in 1989 and it is a magical place. I was coming from an abuseive marriage and needed a place to heal. I ended up in and around Provo. Driving and hiking the Alpine loop that runs through Sundance wsa a way of purging the negativety that had nearly drown me back in Chicago the trees the animals everything soothed my soul. My children learned to ski at sundance and we all frequented the restaurants and outdoor theaters. Sundance had a direct effect on all my children, one is in the film business and the other 2 are working artists. This is my home now. My front window looks out at Mt. Timpnogas. and it is a constant in my life. Altho things have changed in the last 27 years, the roads have been widened and locals avoid the Sundance Film Festival like the plague now, the beauty is still everywhere in Utah. Come here and connect to your mothe earth. She will take good care of you.

We just moved here to Utah a year ago, just discovered this magical, beautiful place. Sundance Resort is unlike any place I've ever been. Rustic charm, simply elegant beauty, the nature & mountains are more picturesque than any other. The fresh mountain air is so clean, you can smell the pine, just walking the trails. A very special place! Very romantic!

So beautiful. Lot's of wonderful memories at this resort -- from skiing with my family and friends, getting giant lollipops at the Bluegrass Festival, dinner at The Tree Room at 15 with my dad and then bumping into Mr. Redford (leaving a thrilling story for me to tell, although anticlimactic for most), attending theatre productions, and giving my girls their first ski lessons -- Thanks Sundance! Glad you've kept it beautiful.

      No like. No, not like.
Let go of preferences and enter into a spiritual approach to skiing, which always unfolds to an epic day of power skiing, a place where your mind turns inward and disappears into the heart of what is The Zen of Skiing. There is absolute freedom here with no out-of-bounds signs, fall zones, rocks, ice, slush or rain.
      Or not.
Just saying that I first skied at "ScumDance" in 1967 (Timp Haven). And, yes the snow conditions are most consistent for me at Alta. And today, I am simply grateful that I can ski and I hope to ski at 80. Kind regards and respect to you JD.

The whole area is becoming overdeveloped these days. It is losing its charm. Legacy pastoral mountain valley ranch and farm land in nearby Midway and Heber valley is sadly being sold off by new generations for ugly high density development. Provo was lost years ago.
