    In mathematics, the sine is a trigonometric function of an angle. The sine of any angle is the length of the far side of the triangle (the "opposite") divided by the long side (the "hypotenuse")

    Ok let me help your video title out.
    Sine: Imagine a circle. Mark 2 points anywhere on the circumference and connect them with a line. This is called a chord. Bisect the chord so you find its mid point on the chord.
    Now from the centre of the circle draw a line to the mid point. This will give 2 lines that look like a T - now complete a triangle by putting in the 2 hypothenuses.
    Here's the answer with some notes: Sine: means half of a chord. Because you bisect the line, it's a 90 degrees triangle - always. There are 180 degrees in a triangle. One is 90 degrees due to the bisected line. The other two angles therefore add up to 90 degrees. So the cosine is simply the sign displaced or 'phased' by 90 degrees. So effectively sine and cosine are the same thing just out of phase by 90 degrees.
    If you think in terms of complex numbers, the 'I' or imaginary part ('j' is used in electrical engineering to disambiguate against current - which uses 'I') is the sine part on the complex number - which is the half of a chord part of the triangle (or the opposite side). The cos part is the adjacent side. And as you've probably guessed Z is the hypothenuse.

      Blue Pastel
      That's not what it means... Why does sine give a decimal in a scientific calculator????….

    • @Stratelier
      @Stratelier 6 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      @@aetheonpro396, Blue Pastel actually quoted its official definition. Keep in mind that the hypotenuse is _(by definition!)_ the longest side on a triangle, thus the ratio of ANY side to the hypotenuse is ALWAYS 1.0 or less.
      Due to the particular definitions of trigonometric functions (sine, cosine, tangent) the only parameter that actually affects the ratio is the angle you specify as input. This is why you can simply type it into a calculator and get some result -- but if you don't know what the function is actually _for,_ the result is meaningless.

    This helped me to complete the story:
    sinθ = Opposite/Hypotenuse = 3 / 5 = 0.6
    So sinθ = 0.6, to get the angle for θ, one needs to get rid of the sin.
    θ = Arcsine(0.6) = 36.86º (arcsine is the inverse sine)

  • @CarlNeuDitters
    @CarlNeuDitters 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    I am not a mathematician but I tried to figure out what sine means. It is a property (a constant characteristic, or the nature) of a right angle triangle. In particular it is a property of the opposite and the hypotenuse. So as the hypotenuse is extended (made longer) the length of the opposite will increase at a fixed rate. Sine shows the rate of change. So for example if the the sine is 1/2 (or 0.5) then every time you double the length of the hypotenuse, the opposite will increase by half as much. This was just an example; I do not know if there is any actual triangle that has those results. In short, the sine tells you the rate of change between the opposite and the hypotenuse as either one of them is increased in length.
    The above was calculated using the opposite and hypotenuse. Calculators however can calculate the sine ratio from the angle, just type the angle in degrees, press sine and it will give you the ratio. (I do not know what formula the calculator is using to perform the calculation though).
    As another example, you have two people trying to reach the same point on a map. One person walks from their start position straight to the desired meeting point; another person starts from a different point (but 90 deg from the other person) and has to walk at diagonal to the meeting point (just like an opposite and a hypotenuse). The sine tells you how much longer the hypotenuse-walking person has to walk. For example if the sine is 0.75, the hypotenuse-walking person walks 75 units out of 100 units; the other person only walk 25 units of 100 units.
    Mathematicians on here if you could confirm my understanding is correct or not.

    • @Stratelier
      @Stratelier 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      To answer the original question, because sine is a *ratio of* two sides on a *right triangle,* any specific angle represents a specific shape of triangle and the actual size of the triangle doesn't matter because the lengths cancel each other out. E.g. for a 3-4-5 (as shown in video) or 6-8-10 triangle, the sine is 0.6 for both.

    • @donaldwilliams9848
      @donaldwilliams9848 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Straight answer: .6 is merely 60% of the overall length of the hypotenuse. Just like the cosine (4/5 = .8) is 80% of the overall length of the hypotenuse. It is not directly related to the angle itself. The statement "the sine of theta (angle)" is the mathematical way of saying "the side opposite of the angle". The statement "the cosine of theta (angle)" is the mathematical way of saying "the side adjacent to the angle". The ratio is pertaining to the hypotenuse, not the angle. Hope that helps.

      I use cosine and sine to program elliptical orbits of Kepler bodies (planets, stars and so on) in 3D space. Also use cosine to program gerstner waves for oceans. There many use cases and this video is awful just like school system as sine and cosine are so much more than sides of a triangle.

      In "Real Life" here on Earth I use cosine and sine to help calculate the True Vertical Depth and offset in offshore well drilling. TVD is required for hydrostatic pressure calculations. Offset and azimuth desired "among other things" to avoid crashing into other oil and gas wells. Hope that helps 😜

    • @alkamishra9974
      @alkamishra9974 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Actually there are 6 such functions
      Sine(sin) cosine(cos) tangent(tan) cosecant(cosec) secant(sec) and cotangent(cot)
      These functions are the different ratios of the sides.
      So
      Sin = opp/hyp
      Cos = adj/hyp
      Tan = opp/adj
      Cosec = hyp/opp
      Sec = hyp/adj
      Cot = adj/opp
      This video only explains the sine(sin) function

    • @ashwinchakraborty6312
      @ashwinchakraborty6312 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      since the length in cm of the opposite side is 3, and the hypotenuse is 5.....so sin theta will be equal to opp/hyp, in this case 3/5....by calculating further to bring it to decimals, it becomes 0.6......ik its late but i still wanted to explain. Feels good.

      If it's a reversed ratio, then it's called cosec
