James R. Barker - Rattling the Bedroom Windows

  • Here is the James R. Barker departing Duluth, Minnesota early on the morning of October 5, 2021. She had just picked up a load of iron ore from the Canadian National dock in West Duluth. She was previously seen on this channel on the evening of October 3, as she arrived to begin loading. The loading process took approximately 32 hours to complete. The iron ore was scheduled for delivery to Toledo, Ohio.
    The footage starts with the Barker moving across the St. Louis River Bay shortly after the Barker departed the CN dock. The Barker passes the Midwest Energy Terminal and several of the grain dock before passing under the John A. Blatnik bridge. We then catch up with her again at Canal Park, where she passes under the Aerial Lift Bridge and makes her way onto Lake Superior. As she departs, the Barker lets loose with a loud master salute from her dual horns to serve as a wake-up call for Duluth. Surely a few bedroom windows were rattled by the Barker's salute!
    The James R. Barker is 1004 feet in length and was built in 1976 by the American Ship Building Company of Lorain, Ohio. According to the Boatnerd website, she is powered by "two 8,000 bhp V-16 cylinder, four stroke cycle, single acting, turbocharged Colt-Pielstick PC2V diesel engines, built by Fairbanks Morse Engine Division of Colt Industries, Beloit, WI driving through a Falk reversing gear box to two Bird-Johnson controllable pitch, stainless steel, four bladed propellers seventeen feet, six inches in diameter." She has a cargo capacity of 63,300 tons. She has the distinction of being the first self-contained 1000-footer to be built with the entire superstructure at the aft end of the vessel. This design would be the model the remaining 1000-footers to be built for Great Lakes service.

    The James R. Barker’s horn giving a long masters salute is just one of those things that brings a smile to my face, every time I hear it…. No matter how many times I’ve heard it! 😁

    A captivating light show of the Barker as she crosses St. Louis Bay.......
    She moves oh so quietly as she passes under the Blatnik Bridge.....
    Great head on shot of her and the turn as she approaches the Aerial Bridge....
    And then.......the quietness is broken...
    The Barker is not shy on this morning!
    That infamous salute is echoed through
    The windows......what a sound...
    Beautiful departure shot with her reflection in the Canal...then this hard working girl stealthily moves on...quietly..
    Great video......thanks for this...

      I was totally expecting a quiet departure, since so few were there to watch her. But we got the deluxe master salute! Thanks as always for your nice comments. 🙂

And what a Wake Up call from the Lady..... She definitely wanted everyone to know she was on her way out. I'd hate to see what the Electric Bill is to keep the Lift Bridge all lit up. The Barker Bark. I wanted to visit Duluth for 10 years, finally got to this year. The second vessel that came in was the James R. Barker. I could have gotten in the car and gone home after that and been happy. The next few days were just icing on the cake. I wonder if the new sister boat being finished up in Sturgeon Bay has a similar horn?

    • @1Long2Short
      @1Long2Short  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I would be surprised if the Mark Barker gets the same horns. I think the James Barker takes pride in their horn setup and would complain if another ship at Interlake got the same horns. 😆

    This video is a real stand-out in my book! I've watched so many. This one captures so much, from all aspects: perfect time of day, video length, editing, audio, camera angles, every single detail. I really like this one! I wonder what the rest of your channel is like...I will have to look. Thank you for creating and posting.....
    Just one more point: when She's passing the (first) grain elevator, it really captures the scale of things. I thought of what I think Walt Whitman said of Chicago, but for Duluth: a great stacker of wheat. The scale and age of the institutions at work there come through in somber color, and steady, enduring mass built by many, and with good intention toward mankind! Many thanks again!

      Definitely worth a visit! Plus, Duluth is a nice city overall, with lots to do... with a museum ship, boat tours, railroad museum, aquarium, zoo, and lots of decent places to eat. Canal Park, where you see the ships, is free to visit (except the parking) and they have a maritime museum with some interesting artifacts.

    I grew up near downtown Detroit on the Detroit River I swear I remember hearing a horn like that every once in a while. None of the other ships sounded like that. The rest sound normal with just different pitches and combinations of horns. This one ship always stood out. Just wondering if it's the same ship. Went to Duluth a couple times over the years, and I could have sworn when I went in 08, this ship had a different horn, granted could be thinking of the Mesabi Miner, but do distinctly remember the museum saying the John G Munson had the famous “voice” and title of best horn on the lakes at the point in time (saw both of those ships). If that’s the case when did they replace it?

    • @1Long2Short
      @1Long2Short  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I don’t know how long the Barker has had her current horn setup. I saw some videos of her on TH-cam from 9 or 10 years ago and she had them then, but her captain wasn’t always blowing both horns or doing the same style of salutes that they currently do. Even the ultra-long salutes she does now have only been for the couple of years.

    • @jonathanellsworth21
      @jonathanellsworth21 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Ok, thanks! Always loved the Barker and have kept tabs on it for years. The first ship I ever saw, when I was five years old and to say it inspired me is an understatement! Even built a “model” of it from shoe boxes and cardboard cutouts… so many of even my adult interests come from this ship and that first encounter, and that was even without the amazing horn blasts.

      Diesel engines on the Barker 🙂 The last few steamers working the lakes burn heavy fuel oil. The coal fired freighters are no more.

    • @1Long2Short

      They use an exhaust scrubbing system (that uses steam) to remove particulates. So it is steam you're seeing, but on a diesel-powered vessel.

    • @grasscutter88
      @grasscutter88 7 หลายเดือนก่อน
