Saw this paraphrased from somewhere else, can’t remember where, but this is an interesting take on Godzilla’s world view and his reaction to his nuke-induced mutation:
I was once the last of my kind.
But you, in your quest for godhood, meddling with powers you could barely understand, you have changed me. Twisted me, into something unrecognizable. I am no longer the last of my kind. I am now the first, and I hate you all the more for it. Because of you, I have never been more alone.

Hollywood never puts foreign films on par with its own... they are always 1 or 2 steps below when foreign films are sometimes much better, not always obviously (Be careful , there are exceptions that break that rule, where foreign films are in many categories and take all the glory of the night, but I count those on the fingers of one hand)

  • @RailfanJason

Shin Godzilla was more mindless, Minus One actively hates humanity because he knows it was our bombs that changed him.
The director has said he is in constant, severe pain from the massive increase in size. His body was never meant to be so large, every step he takes is excruciating. This is why he walks like a robot.
He wants to inflict as much pain on humans as we've put him through. So, even the monster is as deserving of sympathy as the humans are.

@@michaelhuie5878 I completely missed it in the theater. I think it's because most people are trained on their faces and not the neck. Although her neck seems fully centered, but when it's over, I think most people are just relieved that she is alive. Or angry because it doesn't make sense. Most people miss the first few minutes and the last few minutes of a movie because some aren't really ready to get into the movie, and at the end, same, are ready to stretch their legs.

I have seen Godzilla Minus One five times at the theater, with the last viewing in Minus Color. It's the only film I've watched this many times. Where to begin? The writing is excellent, featuring a tight script with great characters and a moving narrative where Godzilla serves as a powerful metaphor. The big G is not only a manifestation of the atomic bomb but also a haunting reminder of the guilt our lead character faces for his cowardice. This life-affirming film centers on a kamikaze pilot as the protagonist.
The movie is filled with subtle clues, such as how Noriko survives the Ginza attack. Every time Godzilla is damaged, his skin falls off, and any living thing that comes into contact with his skin cells will heal, explaining Noriko's minor injuries in the end. Additionally, Shikishima’s head trauma and black eye are healed after exposure to the irradiated black rain following the blast, while The Kid remains in an arm sling.
The writing is phenomenal, with each character undergoing a redemption arc and actively contributing to the main character's growth.

The Legendary Monsterverse Godzilla films are a lot like the 60s and 70s Showa-era films, where Godzilla is the good guy and the movies are kid-friendly monster bashes. The film-maker for Godzilla Minus One said that he actually really liked Godzilla X Kong: The New Empire because it reminded him of those fun, old films. That movie does actually have a lot of beats and call backs to the Showa-era Godzilla flicks.

The film is called Minus One because post World War II left Japan in ruins. They had to start all over again from ground Zero to rebuild.
Then Godzilla shows up and wrecks even more havoc. Sending them from Zero to Minus One!! -OG

I love the foreshadowing in this film. The dead radiated deep sea fish rising to the surface too fast that their stomachs explode out of their mouths due to the rapid pressure changes.
They attempt to do the very same thing to Godzilla by using the force of nature against him where tanks and battleships seemingly have failed.
But Godzilla is also a force of nature born of mankind's nuclear energy. Can he even be destroyed? Godzilla is the unknown element. -OG

I noticed the black thing crawling up her neck too and rationalised it as radiation damage, since they detected high levels of radioactive materials in the blast zone… or it could just be a giant bruise.
Btw that Monster Hunter Wilds insert at the end caught me off guard. Perfect from one monster to the next. 😂

@@-EchoesIntoEternity- I heard the same as well. Some of the people working on this film must have been working for very low wages. Nonetheless, I don't know how the managed to make a film at such a high level of quality at such a relatively low budget compared to most Hollywood movies.

This movie was Fantastic (no wonder it got an Oscar) & I positively loved how Godzilla shoots out his atomic breath which the dorsal plates shift outwards from its body is a references to Godzilla, Mothra and King Ghidorah: Giant Monsters All-Out Attack (2001) because the Godzilla suit used in that film had a mechanism to also shift its dorsal plates up
    - "Minus One" is a reference to how Japan had been devastated by WWII sending them to Zero but then when Godzilla attacks then they went into the negative
    - The roar they used in this movie is the original Godzilla roar over loud speakers & recorded the audio
    - Koichi is maybe a reference to Koichi Kawakita the special effects director of the late '80 to '90s Godzilla films while as for Shikishima comes from the squadron that conducted the first successful kamikaze attack called "Shikishima Squadron"

One of the best movies in years. Mainly because it was a serious drama that just happened to have a monster in it.
I'm traumatized by the looks on the faces of the crowd when they see Godzilla about to nuke everything. It truly makes the concept of Japan being at zero after the war and this taking them to minus one.
Now that the Age of the Superhero Movies is clearly over, I'm hoping we're going to enter the age of taking monsters etc... deadly seriously.

The mark on her neck at the hospital is a Godzilla cell. It's probably why she survived the blast. It helped to heal her.
But to what end? Will she mutate? Are there other victims who similarly contracted the Godzilla cell?
I've also heard that the tattoo on her neck is a symbol for Mothra. Perhaps Mothra will be featured in the next movie?? -OG

I got to see Godzilla Minus One in theaters six times' when I went last time during its last week I saw it in imax and it was just as good, let this be a lesson when a good movie like this comes out go see it in a theaters.
You will be happy to know they do plan on making a sequel to this' so when it comes to theaters next time don't wait see it as soon as possible, I bet it will be just as good as the first one or better.
That thing you saw on Noriko neck were Godzilla cells' there is a good chance she might become a giant monster in the next one, along with Godzilla back' horrifying times are ahead for all of us to see in the next one.

Godzilla is the revenge upon mankind's war. That's his very being, and he takes it out on Japan. Godzilla was born of nuclear energy. He was created from all the atomic experimental tests of war in the deep ocean.
It's unfortunate timing because Japan is no longer at war. They are a defeated country, and then Godzilla comes to unleash his fury upon them.
In a way, Godzilla is the ultimate anti-war monster. He'll put an end to that war with a single atomic breath.
I love how the civilians band together as one with a motto of no lives loss to stop Godzilla and without the aid of the government. This is truly an anti-war film. -OG
