Warvvolf Yeah 250 does not include marketing at all. Keep in mind Lucasfilm gets about 60-65% of the box office. The theatres get the rest. Solo need to make about 735 million to break even if we assume 480 including marketing.
Remember that they don't get 100% profit from ticket sales too. So if they need 500 million to break even then they will actually need the movie to make 1 billion world wide in ticket sales.
250 million is just the estimated cost of the film itself. That does not include marketing, distribution, translation for foreign markets, paying out the lawsuit over that advert flub, ect. Movies make around half of the money on ticket sales domestically and significantly less internationally in the best of circumstances. A conservative estimate says they need 350-400 million profit to break even, some put it closer to 500. So by that logic the movie needs 700 million to 1 billion world wide to even start to make money.
The EU had many Storys without the Skywalkers and they were great, like The Old Republic or Darth Plagues. thats what i wanted to see...There was so much Potential. but noooo they made this horrible Fan Trilogy and an unnecessary Solo Movie.

Star Wars can survive political agenda pushing and bad movies but no franchise can survive fighting their fans. Star Wars didn't become the juggernaut it has been for the past few decades because of their business plan or creative decisions. It became what it is because of the devotion of the fanbase and if you attack that, the franchise will collapse.
As an ex-pat American now living in Japan, I can back up what you are saying about the Star Wars movies bombing overseas. Yeah, when ep. VII came out, it had generally the same reaction as it did in America. People thought it was ok, and were interested to see where it goes. But, after ep. VIII, let me tell you, pretty much nobody in Japan is that interested in the franchise right now. Keep in mind, Japan is a 99.9% Asian country, less than 0.1% of the population is white, black, hispanic etc. But, all of my Japanese friends that I talked to, have told me that all the characters just feel "forced" into the movie. They say わざとらしい (wazatorashii) in Japanese. I have heard that word so many times about the new Star Wars since Ep. VIII came out. The new Lucasfilm is claiming that the old Star Wars had too many white characters, and it was un-relate-able to other ethnic groups. But let me tell you, that is clearly an American way of thinking, only. Characters can be relate-able regardless of what their skin color or ethnicity is. Lots of Japanese people, who are now in their 40s - 50s+, LOVE the original trilogy. Luke Skywalker is just as legendary as a character in Japan, as he is in America. Same with Han Solo. Does it matter to Japanese people that they are white? No! Absolutely not! Why? because they aren't racists and they aren't thinking about dumb shit like race when they are watching an engaging story. It's just the same as if I watch something Japanese, some Japanese movie or show, I can relate to the characters even though I'm white and they are Japanese. The new Lucasfilm really dropped the ball with this new era of Star Wars. They have been extremely short sighted, and are only pushing a currently American political agenda. And it doesn't fly in Japan.

I appreciate that. Don't worry; it really isn't that big of a deal. I began transitioning almost a decade ago, and it really doesn't enter into my daily thoughts anymore. It works for me and I'm able to live happily without bugging people about it. I've always had the attitude that me being trans doesn't make me special or noteworthy in any way. I'm just another person; nothing more, nothing less. Honestly, I think the fight itself is the problem. I appreciate the idea behind pushing for more trans acceptance, but the way people have been going about it - ramming the idea down people's throats - has only served to have the opposite effect. The only thing I'm doing is adjusting how I look outside to more closely represent my own self-image. Let me put this another way: say you were born with a disfiguring facial tumor. It's completely benign and no real threat, but it's visible to you every single day. Now, say you can have the tumor removed by a plastic surgeon. You'll never look completely NORMAL, but you can look closer to how you wish to appear. Now, do you think that a person who opts for surgery is lying to themselves about who they are? Are they being dishonest to the world? Are they delusional or mentally sick? This isn't some magical spell. It's a long, arduous process that takes a LOT of time, effort, and money to do. And it will never be perfect. Obviously. But if it's close enough for me to feel comfortable with myself, then that is all I want. Believe me when I say that I've had plenty of time to rethink this. You don't go through the motions of transitioning without being 100% aware of all of the risks and drawbacks of it. I hope that clarifies things. I understand your perception and I don't hold it against you at all. Your concerns are valid, if slightly exaggerated. ^^;
Aaron Tan if you haven’t seen SOLO yet, you should check it out! TLJ had some issues... but none of those issues are present in SOLO. It was an awesome film, in my opinion. One of my faves in the series.

In addition they lost the complete Chinese market, since most Asians seem to realize that this shit cant be compared to real Star Wars movies.

The first Star Wars release in 41 years I did not attend opening weekend/night showing. No plans to give my money to them. All memorabilia for sale on offer up. Very disappointed.
ryan king I was sort of on board with you until you started dissing The Phantom Menace; I've had enough of that bullshit. That movie isn't flawless, but it's damn near close to it and everything you mentioned as flaws inherent actually happened in the later installments: AotC and RotS, not TPM. While I still enjoy AotC and RotS to a lesser degree, I'll agree that they don't hold the same heart or at least place in _my_ heart as the Original Trilogy and Episode I, but The Phantom Menace was George Lucas' baby and he poured his heart into it - it's an excellent film. Amidala wasn't a token strong female - she was one of the first in Hollywood and her character didn't start off that way; Amidala put her faith in the Republic to take action and help her oppressed people and was afraid to act for herself - she was unsure of her own decisions. She learned throughout the course of the movie to put her faith in herself and those immediately around her, those she trusted, and in doing so became a strong character. That's called character progression. Jango Fett was played by New Zealand actor Temuera Morrison and I loved his performance; easily one of the highlights of Attack of the Clones was the focus on the bounty hunter and the whole "murder mystery" theme was quite enjoyable. Now, I do agree that Star Wars had fallen far from its former glory, but that didn't even begin with The Force Awakens and everything that came after: it began with people dumping on the prequel trilogy on the internet. It's become a meme within the Star Wars fandom to mention the prequel films as abhorrent and make an obligatory Jar Jar Binks joke as if those films and The Phantom Menace especially are anathema to what made the Original Trilogy great; if one doesn't do so, one's opinion isn't taken seriously. For the last decade, every single internet video about Star Wars began with a PT bash-fest. An entire generation of people grew up in a world being taught that they _had_ to hate the prequel trilogy; that they were _supposed_ to hate them. It was this blind hatred that created this mess; that drove George Lucas to sell his life's work to Disney and ultimately destroy everything that millions of people have held dear for the last forty years. Kathleen Kennedy has literally killed Star Wars for thousands of people; I can't even stand to hear a blaster sound or a snippet of the "Force" theme in a commercial without getting a bad taste in my mouth. I, the kid who was outcast and made a "nerd" and a "loser" just for enjoying Star Wars in the 90's yet stuck true to my favorite films, now hate Star Wars. Sure, I can still watch the old films - especially The Phantom Menace which will always be my favorite - but I'll never give another cent to what Lucasfilm has become.
Again, you're mixing up AotC with The Phantom Menace. In TPM, the most "badass" Amidala gets is firing a blaster. You're complaining that the Jedi represent people from all corners of the galaxy and not just humans? Go watch the Original Trilogy and tell me how many aliens are featured throughout that aren't human, even in positions of command like Nien Nub or Admiral Ackbar. How in any way was TPM a jab at boys? One of the main characters is a nine year old boy, for crying out loud. The main protagonist was a stoic powerful man and the majority of characters within are male - only one of which is a bumbling oaf and even he has redeeming qualities and proved himself useful in the end. You evidently aren't very familiar with The Phantom Menace; most Star Wars fans aren't as the internet community convinced them it was terrible so they never watch it or may have seen it once back in 99 and think they remember it. You could argue that the whole SJW crap in Star Wars started in 77, with your logic, when my dad first took my older brother to see STAR WARS and it had a strong female character as one of the leads. Big Fat Man It would certainly help if they actually put some time into writing these movies. It feels like they are writing an episode for some 45 minute tv show rather than a 2 and half hour movie taking part in a multi-generational saga that has been in our lives longer than some of these writers have been alive.

It's about two things: respecting iconic characters and organically introducing different characters into a narrative. The sex lives of the Star Wars characters has never been that much of a focus. So introducing a character and making it a point to let everybody know that he or she is gay, pansexual, whatever is a deliberate ploy to pander to the LGBTQ audience and be relevant in the current political landscape. Rewriting an iconic heterosexual character like Lando Calrissian and labelling him as pansexual (or gay) is even worse.

As a black man, I'm indifferent to the new films. Black people were represented pretty well with Lando and Mace so I had no issues back then. The thing that started to make me check out was Finn. At first I thought that it's cool to have a black lead but it wasn't a deal breaker since I was in it for a continuance of the overall story. Maybe it's the writer in me but I always thought the story wasn't over based solely on Ep. VI's ending(The Empire wasn't going to take that shit lying down, Luke had to rebuild and "genociding" The Sith can't be what "balance" means). The problem is that they didn't stick the landing. Not only was he a decoy protagonist, which means they lied to the fans, but he was a complete coward. The problem was compounded by fact that he got no development really. You could see Han and Lando, the basis for part of Finn, developing in their films. It got annoying because the black coward is a completely old trope in film and is clearly a feminist narrative. I mean, if Kennedy couldn't make a solid franchise, she could at least do the things she set out to do well. Makes a female protagonist but writes the character lazily and in a way that insults OG characters, actors and fans. Makes prominent black and Hispanic characters but makes them completely unlikable. Makes the antagonists white males(sidenote: I would've loved it if the villains were black which is something that wouldn't have been yet another retread) but makes them confusing to a brobdignagian level. If you can't be good, be good at it. This woman, however, it terrible all the way around.

I always felt SW was the most inclusive fan base in all of the fandoms, but after I finished watching TLJ, it felt like Lucasfilm was forcing me out of our universe. Warvvolf Yeah 250 does not include marketing at all. Keep in mind Lucasfilm gets about 60-65% of the box office. The theatres get the rest. Solo need to make about 735 million to break even if we assume 480 including marketing.
Remember that they don't get 100% profit from ticket sales too. So if they need 500 million to break even then they will actually need the movie to make 1 billion world wide in ticket sales.
250 million is just the estimated cost of the film itself. That does not include marketing, distribution, translation for foreign markets, paying out the lawsuit over that advert flub, ect. Movies make around half of the money on ticket sales domestically and significantly less internationally in the best of circumstances. A conservative estimate says they need 350-400 million profit to break even, some put it closer to 500. So by that logic the movie needs 700 million to 1 billion world wide to even start to make money.

As an ex-pat American now living in Japan, I can back up what you are saying about the Star Wars movies bombing overseas. Yeah, when ep. VII came out, it had generally the same reaction as it did in America. People thought it was ok, and were interested to see where it goes. But, after ep. VIII, let me tell you, pretty much nobody in Japan is that interested in the franchise right now.
Keep in mind, Japan is a 99.9% Asian country, less than 0.1% of the population is white, black, hispanic etc. But, all of my Japanese friends that I talked to, have told me that all the characters just feel "forced" into the movie. They say わざとらしい (wazatorashii) in Japanese. I have heard that word so many times about the new Star Wars since Ep. VIII came out.
The new Lucasfilm is claiming that the old Star Wars had too many white characters, and it was un-relate-able to other ethnic groups. But let me tell you, that is clearly an American way of thinking, only. Characters can be relate-able regardless of what their skin color or ethnicity is. Lots of Japanese people, who are now in their 40s - 50s+, LOVE the original trilogy. Luke Skywalker is just as legendary as a character in Japan, as he is in America. Same with Han Solo. Does it matter to Japanese people that they are white? No! Absolutely not! Why? because they aren't racists and they aren't thinking about dumb shit like race when they are watching an engaging story. It's just the same as if I watch something Japanese, some Japanese movie or show, I can relate to the characters even though I'm white and they are Japanese.
The new Lucasfilm really dropped the ball with this new era of Star Wars. They have been extremely short sighted, and are only pushing a currently American political agenda. And it doesn't fly in Japan.
I tell you that as an asian, that way of thinking isn't only happening in Japan but, in whole of Asia. If you're in China and go ask a chinese, or in Malaysia and ask a malaysian, they will say the same thing as the Japanese.

I appreciate that. Don't worry; it really isn't that big of a deal. I began transitioning almost a decade ago, and it really doesn't enter into my daily thoughts anymore. It works for me and I'm able to live happily without bugging people about it. I've always had the attitude that me being trans doesn't make me special or noteworthy in any way. I'm just another person; nothing more, nothing less.
Honestly, I think the fight itself is the problem. I appreciate the idea behind pushing for more trans acceptance, but the way people have been going about it - ramming the idea down people's throats - has only served to have the opposite effect. It's done nothing but increase the pushback and people talking about how transgenderism is some kind of mental defect and people should be locked up in the loony bin for being trans. Meanwhile I'm sitting here in the middle living my life going "Guys... Can I maybe not be involved with this argument?"

Let me begin by explaining that I'm an atheist, Luke Marengo. I don't believe a deity exists. So telling me to seek advice from God is like telling me to seek advice from Gandalf. No disrespect intended; I'm just explaining how it sounds to my individual perception.
At any rate, it's not like I'm unaware of what I am. Transgenderism isn't a delusion, and is in fact extensively tested for to ensure that it is not before a proper diagnosis can be made. You can't treat transgenderism in the same way you can treat delusional disorders. I am 100% aware that I am and always will be biologically male. That is reality. And that isn't what I'm changing. The only thing I'm doing is adjusting how I look outside to more closely represent my own self-image.
Let me put this another way: say you were born with a disfiguring facial tumor. It's completely benign and no real threat, but it's visible to you every single day. Now, say you can have the tumor removed by a plastic surgeon. You'll never look completely NORMAL, but you can look closer to how you wish to appear. Now, do you think that a person who opts for surgery is lying to themselves about who they are? Are they being dishonest to the world? Are they delusional or mentally sick?
This isn't some magical spell. It's a long, arduous process that takes a LOT of time, effort, and money to do. And it will never be perfect. Obviously. But if it's close enough for me to feel comfortable with myself, then that is all I want. Believe me when I say that I've had plenty of time to rethink this. You don't go through the motions of transitioning without being 100% aware of all of the risks and drawbacks of it.
I hope that clarifies things. I understand your perception and I don't hold it against you at all. Your concerns are valid, if slightly exaggerated. ^^;

In addition they lost the complete Chinese market, since most Asians seem to realize that this shit cant be compared to real Star Wars movies.

ryan king I was sort of on board with you until you started dissing The Phantom Menace; I've had enough of that bullshit. That movie isn't flawless, but it's damn near close to it and everything you mentioned as flaws inherent actually happened in the later installments: AotC and RotS, not TPM. While I still enjoy AotC and RotS to a lesser degree, I'll agree that they don't hold the same heart or at least place in _my_ heart as the Original Trilogy and Episode I, but The Phantom Menace was George Lucas' baby and he poured his heart into it - it's an excellent film. Amidala wasn't a token strong female - she was one of the first in Hollywood and her character didn't start off that way; Amidala put her faith in the Republic to take action and help her oppressed people and was afraid to act for herself - she was unsure of her own decisions. She learned throughout the course of the movie to put her faith in herself and those immediately around her, those she trusted, and in doing so became a strong character. That's called character progression.
Jango Fett was played by New Zealand actor Temuera Morrison and I loved his performance; easily one of the highlights of Attack of the Clones was the focus on the bounty hunter and the whole "murder mystery" theme was quite enjoyable.
Now, I do agree that Star Wars had fallen far from its former glory, but that didn't even begin with The Force Awakens and everything that came after: it began with people dumping on the prequel trilogy on the internet. It's become a meme within the Star Wars fandom to mention the prequel films as abhorrent and make an obligatory Jar Jar Binks joke as if those films and The Phantom Menace especially are anathema to what made the Original Trilogy great; if one doesn't do so, one's opinion isn't taken seriously. For the last decade, every single internet video about Star Wars began with a PT bash-fest. An entire generation of people grew up in a world being taught that they _had_ to hate the prequel trilogy; that they were _supposed_ to hate them. It was this blind hatred that created this mess; that drove George Lucas to sell his life's work to Disney and ultimately destroy everything that millions of people have held dear for the last forty years. Kathleen Kennedy has literally killed Star Wars for thousands of people; I can't even stand to hear a blaster sound or a snippet of the "Force" theme in a commercial without getting a bad taste in my mouth. I, the kid who was outcast and made a "nerd" and a "loser" just for enjoying Star Wars in the 90's yet stuck true to my favorite films, now hate Star Wars. Sure, I can still watch the old films - especially The Phantom Menace which will always be my favorite - but I'll never give another cent to what Lucasfilm has become.

Again, you're mixing up AotC with The Phantom Menace. In TPM, the most "badass" Amidala gets is firing a blaster. You're complaining that the Jedi represent people from all corners of the galaxy and not just humans? Go watch the Original Trilogy and tell me how many aliens are featured throughout that aren't human, even in positions of command like Nien Nub or Admiral Ackbar. How in any way was TPM a jab at boys? One of the main characters is a nine year old boy, for crying out loud. The main protagonist was a stoic powerful man and the majority of characters within are male - only one of which is a bumbling oaf and even he has redeeming qualities and proved himself useful in the end. You evidently aren't very familiar with The Phantom Menace; most Star Wars fans aren't as the internet community convinced them it was terrible so they never watch it or may have seen it once back in 99 and think they remember it. Dude, I actually stayed home and watched a TRUE standalone Star Wars movie called ROGUE ONE instead of wasting $12 on SOYLO.
So much this. They don't seem to get it. It's not about being racist, sexist, or homophobic. It's about two things: respecting iconic characters and organically introducing different characters into a narrative. The sex lives of the Star Wars characters has never been that much of a focus. So introducing a character and making it a point to let everybody know that he or she is gay, pansexual, whatever is a deliberate ploy to pander to the LGBTQ audience and be relevant in the current political landscape. Rewriting an iconic heterosexual character like Lando Calrissian and labelling him as pansexual (or gay) is even worse.

As a black man, I'm indifferent to the new films. Black people were represented pretty well with Lando and Mace so I had no issues back then. The thing that started to make me check out was Finn.
At first I thought that it's cool to have a black lead but it wasn't a deal breaker since I was in it for a continuance of the overall story. Maybe it's the writer in me but I always thought the story wasn't over based solely on Ep. VI's ending(The Empire wasn't going to take that shit lying down, Luke had to rebuild and "genociding" The Sith can't be what "balance" means). The problem is that they didn't stick the landing. Not only was he a decoy protagonist, which means they lied to the fans, but he was a complete coward. The problem was compounded by fact that he got no development really. You could see Han and Lando, the basis for part of Finn, developing in their films. It got annoying because the black coward is a completely old trope in film and is clearly a feminist narrative.
I mean, if Kennedy couldn't make a solid franchise, she could at least do the things she set out to do well. Makes a female protagonist but writes the character lazily and in a way that insults OG characters, actors and fans. Makes prominent black and Hispanic characters but makes them completely unlikable. Makes the antagonists white males(sidenote: I would've loved it if the villains were black which is something that wouldn't have been yet another retread) but makes them confusing to a brobdignagian level.
If you can't be good, be good at it. This woman, however, it terrible all the way around.

I’m Puerto Rican and Cuban, and I have major issue with the SJW politics being jammed down my throat. I felt the entire movie (TLJ) was just one giant chastising. I always felt SW was the most inclusive fan base in all of the fandoms, but after I finished watching TLJ, it felt like Lucasfilm was forcing me out of our universe. It’s a shame that it’s come to this, but im with you Jeremy. I’m boycotting Soylo and ep 9, and all SW films that have Ruin Johnson’s name, or Jonathan Kasdan’s attached. Breaks my fucking heart.
