“Tax Rises Are Coming!” Chancellor Blames £22bn Black Hole On Tories And Axes Winter Fuel Payments

  • Public sector workers are in line for a pay rise but 10 million pensioners will lose out on winter fuel payments in an attempt to fill a £22 billion black hole in the public finances, the Chancellor has announced.
Rachel Reeves said she was making “difficult decisions” as she accused the previous government of leaving £21.9 billion of unfunded commitments that it had “covered up from the country”.
Talk’s Peter Cardwell is joined by editor of The Times Money Mentor, Georgie Frost, to discuss the Chancellor’s “immediate action” to address the shortfall.

This is a diabolical move , pensioner’s need there heating on more than most. A lot of them were already having to choose heating or food what now. The money people on benefits have received during the cost of living crisis as opposed to the ones that are just over the benefit it criminal. These poor people have worked and paid their tax for the last 50 years or more and some are still working just to make ends meet. Penalising the ones least able to increase their income.
We are a rich country who can give money to other countries in aid and keep people who are her illegally in hotels paying no energy bills but we can’t ensure our own elderly are looked after warm and well fed in winter.

It also puts pressure on the state schools, now the government have to pay for all of the private school kids that have to leave, even more expense for the tax payer. I have sacrificed so much to send my children to private school because the state schools near me are terrible, the rich parents will complain about the rises, but will pay the money. People like me cannot afford to pay more, I earn at best an average income. Labour are just making the gap between the rich and poor even bigger, only being able to access top education if you are ridiculously rich seems a terrible idea for social mobility. They are removing any opportunity for people to try and make a better life for their children or themselves

They and all other TV coverage of this should be placing on screen basic criteria to be eligible, rather than guessing games plus telephone numbers to call to either find out more, or make a claim. Many pensioners either aren't tech savy at all, have either no grown up family who will make various checks on their behalf. I'm not strictly against changing the winter fuel, but you have to tell everyone especially those with nobody looking out for them how to still get it. Otherwise all that will happen is unnecessary suffering, deaths or ill health to older people fearing paying the heating bill. That's the real problem, those whom need it most won't have a clue how to start getting it again. With energy costs at pretty much record highs people in general are already (old and young) risking their health and safety of their home from fear of the Bill. Illnesses caused by cold, and damp properties will just add to the NHS burden. Never ever joined up thinking, only ever rob from one pot to make the balance add up, forgetting every change to each pot has knock on effects and cost to another pot.

At least with Labour in power the low hanging fruit of benefits payments won't be the first targets for savings.

£8 Billion to start up Great British Energy, which is nothing more than an investment compay, which will have individual private investors, mainly large institution investers who will expect a decent annual dividend payment. Wether it will succeed in giving us reliable cheaper energy after spending even more billions, is yet to be found out.
£11 Billion given to poorer countries as "Climate Aid". An absolute political con to do what the UN have said to wealthy Western Nations to pay climate reperations to poorer countries.
Plus the extra it will cost the tax payer for Labours intentions to pay all public employees more money? Anyone know how much that will cost?
All that's besides the £8 to £9 million PER DAY (£2.92 Billion to £3.28 Billion PER YEAR), which Labour are continuing to pay for illegal immigrants, with tough promises they are going to stop illegal immigrants entering this country, tough words just like the other lot used but nothing changed, its getting worse.
