- Public sector workers are in line for a pay rise but 10 million pensioners will lose out on winter fuel payments in an attempt to fill a £22 billion black hole in the public finances, the Chancellor has announced.
Rachel Reeves said she was making “difficult decisions” as she accused the previous government of leaving £21.9 billion of unfunded commitments that it had “covered up from the country”.
In a statement to Parliament, she set out “immediate action” to address the shortfall by £5.5 billion, with the rest of the gap to be addressed at a Budget on October 30.
Talk’s Ian Collins is joined by Dr Roger Gewolb, who says Rachel Reeves blaming the Conservative Party for the ‘black hole’ is “a whole load of tosh”.

Junior Doctors earn between £28K-£32K. When the word ‘Doctor’ is mentioned people automatically hear the loud ringing of the Cash Register. For their hard work in keeping our hospitals afloat people must stop attacking them but support them.

The Chancellor is angered by the fact that most Old Age Pensioners normally don’t vote for Labour and so she is singling them out for punishment. She will soon find a way to jail-break the Triple Lock Plus. Experts now say that the £22B black hole is a figment of the Chancellor’s imagination.
Stop the100 of millions leaving the country in foreign aid. Maybe then we can afford to be generous with our elderly.

There is no climate change, bunkum, ditto renewables, absolute shambles as the windmills and solar panels need to be replaced every twenty years, or before. Also the solar panels are made up of many poisonous components. Search yourself, all will be revealed. Most renewables need to be subsidised, so follow the money too.

I've paid in for 50 years and my pension is only just over £10,000 pa, I don't receive any benefits and now I'm loosing my winter fuel allowance I have nothing I can cut down on as I already struggle to pay the bills. Clearly our new chancellor doesn't care wether I eat or freeze!😢

Taking off the fuel payment for pensioners is absolutely disgusting. I worked for 47 years, paying all the due's and demands to get my pension. The fuel payment was so welcome to help me and my husband......why do we get penalised for working so long. If I hadn't bothered to earn a living and went on benefits, I would still get the payment. IT IS SO WRONG.

Surely for Old Age Pensioners there were things that could be relied upon: the first I would venture is that the pension [as the DWP title "benefit"] is not and will not be means tested. How can a reasonable person make plans when a new "government" can screw everyone over?

Pensioners should feel happy at the removal of the Winter F A. See it differently that Pensioners are charitable by ensuring the illegal immigrants are kept warm in nice hotels with free money, meals and wi fi. Many who do not claim pension credit will be chased up to get it .

My wife & I are pensioners we pay Tax on our Pensions as it is - now 3 weeks in as a new Government she gives striking Doctors 35% pay rise & 5.5% to all the Public Service mob (many of whom still work from home) because "paying is a cheaper option than strikes" (wait for the landslide of strikes if that's the case) but when it comes to Pensioners who are not being means tested she grabs our Winter Fuel payment to fund these pay rises ? This is supposed to be a Socialist Government - really??
As pensioners would think many would require the assistance of the Doctors and NHS. Fairly important I would think.
