Having played Super Mario 64 all my life its easy to forget that Shifting Sand Land's existence isn't exactly obvious, Pikamee's reaction to bumping into it was great. I'm also only now realizing that MIPS juking you is probably just supposed to help you find it
That's Nintendo genius level design for you. They didn't teach you how to play with tutorials before, they taught you with the game itself. Now they do a bit of both.

@@Dukstless I think the difficulty in SM64 comes from the wrong things sometimes though. It's not that the jumps are too hard or the enemies are too strong. Many times, when you fail, if the camera were more responsive or if the controls were less clunky, you wouldn't have failed. That is to say, the difficulty comes less from player error and more from flaws with the game. Not really the case in SMB

watching pika, kiara, and a few others playing SM64 for the first time makes me think maybe i was some sort of a prodigal god gamer when i played this game as a kid. I got an N64 when i was like 5 years old and was able to beat the game... much more likely though is that these girls have the gaming capacity of a kindergartener.
edit: oops hit enter early. try talking to an audience (not friends) properly and reading chat while playing a game. you'll be surprised how much worse you get at games.

It also has to do with how clunky the controls are
I think the controls for this game are just weird. I found RE2 and DMC1 less frustrating than SM64...
What mostly makes this game incredibly hard is the broken camera, I can forgive the physics but definitely not the camera. The DS remake fixed that.
Older games were harder to make it longer to complete them.
I mean, if you know what you're doing, you can do warpless SMB in less than 30 minutes.
