  • Hey Horse Lovers! Today I am going to ride Lumiere at home for the first time ever. In this video I will show you our entire process of what we do to prepare for the first ride at the farm. This video is PACKED FULL of training tips, thoughts, and methods. Lumiere is the most breathtaking horse I have ever seen. He is a Friesian/Clydesdale/Gypsy horse X and is registered as a Drum Horse! From his striking appearance and enchanting presence, this horse captivated me, and this first ride at home is a milestone in our partnership. In this video you will get to see us groom, tack up, and do some groundwork then RIDE! I will also discuss how I go about training new horses and allowing them to adjust to a new home. I am excited for our future together and I hope you are too. HE TRULY IS MY DREAM HORSE! IF YOU ENJOY MY CONTENT SUBSCRIBE!

Amen! Consistancy is important, but so is flexibility. When it comes to teaching any animal or person anything, the most important thing is to meet the student where they are at and be patient at every step. In a perfect world there wouldn't be such a strict timeline for learning goals.

That trot looks so comfortable. Looks like he's floating. The trot is the main gait that the Gypsys would have their Irish Cobs keep to when pulling their caravans. Love your new guy. ❤

LOL, shortly before you mentioned how good he felt to ride, I was thinking that his trot looked very smooth for such a powerfully built guy. He doesn't look so much like he's floating as my Saddlebred did (of course), but glides instead, with no wasted motion. Very pretty mover. He's going to be such a good trail horse! The leashed power even at ease must feel incredible. And oh boy, he knows the word treat well already. His ears perked up like radar. 😄 He's so attentive to you, it's going to be lots of fun to see him learning your movements and reactions. Good boy, Lumi!

I have a question Shae: What do you think about communication with your horses/animals? I saw Lumi change his body language when you spoke about building a connection with him and then lower his head when you praised him. I personally believe that animals can not only learn words but also communicate through energy and feelings. We can share ideas, memories and information by just talking with our animals and listening for their responses. Would love to hear about how/if you communicate with your animals to let them know what's happening etc :) 💖💖💖💖💖 You obviously have a great connection and communication with them so I would love to hear details on this from you ❤

    Hi Shae
I think my absolute most favorite thing about you is that you "give" to your horses before you ask anything of them. And you do that my grooming them and sweet talking to them, engaging them in a most loving way. And treats too. Of course they relax and want to give love back to you. They mirror back to you what you give to them.
Lumi listens so well. You're trotting along and as soon as you say walk slow he does so. And even though he spooked a little at the back of the arena he didn't pull you around or run off. He just let you know he was a little unsure and you comforted him right away and he responded to your comfort. I'd guess that means he trusts you already or that the trust is building. I'm just so happy for you and for Lumi. He has a wonderful life ahead of him at Free Spirit Equestrian.
    ❤❤❤❤❤❤

    Hi
Just some helpful advice. I have several horses with long manes to their knees. 6 large braids or or 3/ 4 running braids will be better than the small braids. The small ones cause breakage. He is beautiful and happy to see he has a loving home ❤

@freespiritequestrian I didn't mean anything disrespectful. I just have more than 33 horses , 16 horses (many breeds) with manes passing the knees and tails dragging more than a foot,
and learned the hard way of trying many different ways. I'm just trying to be helpful.

That's what makes the best trained horses that will be happy and content in training and under saddle in general.

I think you are perfect for him because he seems low keyed and w a gentle spirit so he is happy to do whatever you ask. 🥰👍 Ah, he went into his trot within 2 strides of ask and he looked happy going forward! I love how he listens to you, and he has beautiful manners. He stood quietly at mounting, yay Lumiere!, and tends to square up at halt. When he startled at the far end of the arena, this beautiful giant responded quickly to your lead stop. He’s wonderful and SO sweet! With your thoughtful guidance Shea, I know he’ll get better and better!
Two thoughts. When the wonderful time comes to join him with the herd ~ I hope his magnificent mane never gets nibbled into holes 😳. Bitter Apple lotion rubbed into it to train herd the no no’s?
Also. Steve Young Horsemanship on TH-cam has a quick, excellent method of training horses to lower their heads with a touch to their neck, for bridling and relaxation
triggers. It translates to using in the saddle, too.
    Highly recommended!
While mentioning this, he also teaches (was taught) a very important method, that used by the horse over years, will prevent spinal swayback. It involves using the eraser end of a pencil (eg) ( and eventually just a fingertip) to briefly press into a point on their belly behind the girth area.
It triggers a nerve response for them to
convex, stretch and align their spine.
It’s brief and feels so good to the horse, they can be taught to do this for themselves after the saddle and weight of riding is removed. Steve recs teaching this, starting in the stall.
I think every horse should be taught this, for their well being.
Thinking about it, it’s the safe, socially acceptable form of bucking!
    Happy times with Lumiere, Shea!

He is absolutely beautiful and when you are riding I imagine you and him riding on a sunny warm, not a hot day. There's a nice breeze blowing while you both are in a not a care in the world but your ride together state of mind. I can almost feel the warmth of the sun, feel the breeze and hear birds singing. This is how much I have enjoyed this video

He's absolutely stunning and sweet. He's the poster horse for "fantasy horse". It needs to be said though that he is just as lucky as you. Any horse that lands in your care has absolutely won the lottery. I wish there were a ton more equestrians like you. Happy New Year Free Spirit Equestrian.

Right so! I’ve been in horses since day dot. I’m also a hairdresser.
I do really suggest that you spilt the mane. Like how he was platted when you got him. Several reasons, but primarily your not putting tension on one side of the neck. I’ve long hair like you, how uncomfortable is it when the bun goes off axis 😂😂😂
It’s the same for lumi. So by splitting the mane on alternative platings you get your regrow and no major neck strain. Ask anyone with dreds , they’re a weight! Just like his mane.
Then you can French or Dutch plait it again split on either side to keep balance in the neck muscles.
For showing if it HAS to be contained (gahhhhhhh!) then it’s a French plait on the right. 😊 but I’m in Europe so I’d check 😅
    He’s just a joy! ❤❤❤❤❤

Shae, Lumi is such a good boy. It's great how he follows you already without being led. Loved how his ears perked up when you mentioned treats and how he was waiting for guidance when you told him he could roll. It's going to be amazing watching the two of you together and seeing his growth. I wish all trainers/owners trained their horses at the horses pace like you do instead of the trainers/ owners pace. We humans don't all learn at the pace nor in the same way so why should our animals. They all have their own personality just like we do.

I love how you take everything gently and slowly, you don’t rush and miss out parts of their education. He’s a big boy but his trot looks effortless, the canter will likely be the same when you work him up to it, he really is a one in a million horse and he deserves to have you be his human :)

Love that you take it slow with him and I think it was so funny that you used music that reminded me of Braveheart with Mel Gibson during your first ride! 😂 I keep getting the battle scene playing on repeat in my mind, where he speaks to all of his warriors and motivates them up for the battle.
❤ love seeing your development. Keep up the good job! 👏🏻
